Donald Clark Plan B: Report on 6 MOOCs turns up 10 surprises | e-learning in higher education and beyond | Scoop.it

Great report from the University of Edinburgh on their six 2013 Coursera MOOCs. The report has good data, tries to separate out active learners from window shoppers and not short on surprises. It’s a rich resource and a follow up report is promised. Well done Edinburgh – this is in the true spirit of HE – open, transparent and looking to innovate and improve.

How Teachers Can Best Use Education Technology - Edudemic

How Teachers Can Best Use Education Technology - Edudemic | e-learning in higher education and beyond | Scoop.it

Businesses want to utilize the latest social media to let as many people in their key demographic know about the products they offer as possible. They want their customers to be excited about what is being offered to them, to know that they are valued and that they are getting a great deal. The business world is competitive, but this manifests itself in such a way as (generally) benefiting the customer, otherwise they lose out to someone else.

I won’t bother making the comparison with schools; I think it’s fairly obvious that what is described above is not what we get in the classroom.

Ulrike Grabe's insight:

The message: "The point is simple. Teachers need to be able to understand how to embed technology into what they do. But you can’t do this unless you’re already a good teacher. (...)

The biggest problem with Educational Technology to date is that the people that sign off these projects, or design ‘education apps’ didn’t have Pedagogical Content Knowledge in the first place – they just guessed at what we needed and threw something our way expecting us to figure it out"

Gastbeitrag: Alternative zu iTunes U und Co. | e-learning in higher education and beyond | Scoop.it

Social Networking in the 1600s

Social Networking in the 1600s | e-learning in higher education and beyond | Scoop.it

LONDON — SOCIAL networks stand accused of being enemies of productivity. According to one popular (if questionable) infographic circulating online, the use of Facebook, Twitter and other such sites at work costs the American economy $650 billion each year. Our attention spans are atrophying, our test scores declining, all because of these “weapons of mass distraction.”

Yet such worries have arisen before. In England in the late 1600s, very similar concerns were expressed about another new media-sharing environment, the allure of which seemed to be undermining young people’s ability to concentrate on their studies or their work: the coffeehouse. It was the social-networking site of its day.

Peer assessment may lead to better learning outcomes. In his Human Computer Interface course, Scott Klemmer of th HCI Group found that students can be put to work reviewing their cohorts.
Ulrike Grabe's insight:

from the text: "If my experience is any indication, students seem to be willing to do more of the heavy lifting when they benefit from the examples of their peers. Given that MOOCs are often criticized for their lack of student engagement, peer assessments could be a breakthrough that validates their mass scale."
