Connectivism as a Digital Age Learning Theory

George Siemens and Stephen Downes developed a theory for the digital age, called connectivism, denouncing boundaries of behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism. Their proposed learning theory has issued a debate over whether it is a learning theory or instructional theory or merely a pedagogical view.

I will have to include this in my Learning theories module, perhaps.

This might be my new research topic. Very interesting.

Paige Paul's curator insight, September 15, 2015 7:52 PM

Topic 2- This is an interesting piece that explores how connectivism should be categorized.  Sometimes I think people in the education world can get too caught up in labels and buzzwords, and forget that ultimately what you call it doesn't matter as much as whether or not it promotes student learning.

Integrating Moodle in the Teaching of a First-year Medical Course: A Case Study

Integrating Moodle in the Teaching of a First-year Medical Course: A Case Study | e-learning | Scoop.it

"We have recently used a popular open-source course management system (CMS) Moodle to facilitate our face-to-face teaching of physiology to first-year medical students...The free Moodle platform was simple to use, helped to effectively deliver course materials, and has features that allowed cooperative learning. Students who used the CMS throughout their academic year commented favorably regarding its use as a complement to the face-to-face classroom sessions. The group of students who used the CMS obtained significantly higher scores in the final examination compared with the previous class that did not use the CMS. In addition, there was a significant correlation between student participation and performance in online quizzes and their final examination marks.

We recommend Moodle as a useful tool for physiology educators who are interested in integrating web-based learning into their existing teaching curriculum."

A Comparison of Learning Management System Accessibility

Learning management systems have become the primary delivery platform in most higher education systems for course-related activities such as lecture presentations, readings and assignments, discussions, and quizzes. Until a few years ago, access for learners and instructors with disabilities was either poorly supported or not considered at all in many popular tools. Due to lack of, or limited, accessibility in learning management systems, students were not able to fully or independently participate in key course activities.

At CSUN 2013, we presented a high-level overview of the results of our new evaluation, along with side-by-side comparisons that support our recommendations for improving learning management systems for users with disabilities.

The 21st-Century Digital Learner

The 21st-Century Digital Learner | e-learning | Scoop.it

After hosting dozens of these conversations, I realize one thing: We just don't listen enough to our students. The tradition in education has been not to ask the students what they think or want, but rather for adult educators to design the system and curriculum by themselves, using their "superior" knowledge and experience.

Aunty Alice's curator insight, October 24, 2013 5:27 PM

Just as speaking is the outcome of listening, so writing is the outcome of reading, not the other way round. Listening to the student should also include "listening" to their writing. ie., analyse what they are saying and how they are doing it.  When students evaluate their own work, the teacher should listen and guide them to ways of improving it, whether it be punctuation, paragraphing, spelling, or word or subject knowledge.  This is how we bring students on board and empower them to learn.

Aunty Alice's curator insight, October 31, 2013 4:49 PM

Listening to students has two aspects; listening to what they say orally, and 'listening' to their writing which is only another way of talking, only through a code. Just as learning to speak is tied closely to listening to what is said and being exposed to words that help one to think better, so writing is the same  and relies on reading "or listening" to what others say and how they say it to express clear meaning. The two subjects, reading and writing, are closlely intertwined yet we compartmentalize them in the literacy curriculum. An example of adults thinking they know what is best for children.

A professional-looking and Open Source Live Chat with Webim for visitors to your Moodle site

A professional-looking and Open Source Live Chat with Webim for visitors to your Moodle site | e-learning | Scoop.it
Moodle innovation and programming hacks by Malaysia programmer and teacher, Frankie Kam.

Have you ever visited a site like Wiziq where you were able to click on a link and instantly was attended to by a sales representative on a chat console? At the end of this blog post, you will be able to setup a similar Instant Messaging (IM) system on your Moodle site.

In conclusion, Mibew Messenger may not have the pizzazz and shine of some other commercial IM systems, but for a software that is free and not-too-difficult to install by yourself, it is PROFESSIONAL-looking. It is chockful of features that can be customised and it is a sure way of growing closer to your users and visitors to your site. There I highly recommend Mibew Messenger or your Moodle site. Go ahead, give it a try. I am sure that you will be pleased with the result. Now excuse me while I try to see if I can change the image of that attractive blonde to something that looks closer to me. Over and out for now.
