SpellStar - free spelling app

Get SpellStar Free on the App Store. See screenshots and ratings, and read customer reviews.
Bob Read's insight:

This is a free app for i phone and i pads and was developed for use in spelling support in schools. However, it has a plain interface and so could easily be used by a learning support tutor. working on a 1:1 basis and using a look,  say, cover, write, check approach. You can record a set of key spelling words that a student might need to learn and which they can then hear read back to them before they try to spell them. Each list of words has a code so that they can be shared with students. So, a tutor could make up, store and share a list of key words for letter writing, job applications, vocational topics, etc.

Asda Pizza Call Customer Complaint No Toppings - YouTube

Bob Read's insight:

I'm grateful to my colleague, Naomh Campbell who  recommended this hilarious recording of a complaint phone call to ASDA. Some people think it's a prank call but even if it is, it's still very funny and is a great clip to use to start off  a discussion about customer care, using the telephone, complaint letters, etc

GoConqr - Changing the way you learn

GoConqr - Changing the way you learn | E learning Tools for Functional English | Scoop.it
GoConqr is a personal learning environment that allows students & teachers to create, discover and share learning resources. Transform your learning and achieve your goals with GoConqr
Bob Read's insight:

The GoConqr website used to be called Examtime and enables tutors and learners to create mind maps, flashcard activities and quizzes which can be developed collaboratively and shared easily. You can click a mind map and it will 'play' with each topic presenting itself in turn so that it could be used as a structure for L2 Speaking and Listerning presentation.

You can quickly search the website to see if other tutors have already made quizzes on the topics you want to cover. You can insert images if you want to create quizzes on vocational topics (see image above) Here is an example of a multiple choice quiz on formal vocabulary for use in letter writing -

Flipped and Blended Interactive Video Learning Platform

My Rating: still exploring (but looks promising).

Stephen Bright's curator insight, August 21, 2014 5:00 PM

eduCanon is an online learning environment to create and share interactive video lessons. Teachers begin with any YouTube, Vimeo, or TeacherTube video content (screencasts, Khan Academy, Minute Physics, TED, NOVA, etc.) and transform what is traditionally passive content into an active experience for students. By time-linking activities that students engage with as the video progresses the content is segmented into digestible components - increasing student engagement and, through our real-time monitoring, informing the next day’s lesson planning.

Some nice features - you can't fast-forward through the material, but you can rewind to review something. Questions can also include feedback for responses chosen, and the video automatically pauses at the point the question is asked. Also there is a large range of question types - not just multiple choice - Reflective pause, fill in the blank, free response, check all that apply.

You can also print out worksheets and the question editor has a built-in equation editor for maths. How well this is used will, of course, depend on the skill of the teacher in constructing relevant and challenging questions, but it is definitely a step up from other video interaction web-based tools.

XMind: Mind Mapping Software

XMind: Mind Mapping Software | E learning Tools for Functional English | Scoop.it

Xmind is a free mind mapping tool that can be used to support learners organise their ideas for formal letters, reports, assignments, etc. Often it is the planning stage of the writing process that learners need to cover in more depth so mind mapping software can really help to engage them more effectively in organising their ideas. Also, an electronic mind map can be easily updated and improved without becoming obscured with scribbled additions and corrections.  X mind works on PCs and Macs and there is a portable version that will run from a memory stick if you don't want to install it on your organisation's system.

You can insert photos, colour code topics and add hyperlinks so that a mind map could be used as a structure for a webquest to develop learners' reading skills on the web.

I know several tutors working on a 1:1 basis who use X mind to create a range of learning activities using the 'drag and drop' feature as the basis for simple matching, sequencing and classifying tasks.

PowToon - Brings Awesomeness to your presentations | E learning Tools for Functional English | Scoop.it
PowToon is a brand new presentation tool that allows you to create animated presentations and cartoon style videos just by dragging and dropping.
Bob Read's insight:

This is an excellent free tool if you want to create an animated presentation yourself about a topic you regularly have to cover  or if you think your learners might enjoy making one. The process of working out a storyboard to their video is a great team working task and if you choose a spelling or punctuation topic, it could be an effective way to involve students in focussing on that topic. It's quite easy to use  - here is one I quickly with some learners about apostrophes!
