Perseverance... in small children. The beginning of our "Breakout Story." | E-learning | Scoop.it

I have watched, over the course of this past week, several students "find" their special skills and aptitudes in the various clues laid out in Breakout EDU games. Children have little opportunity to work together towards a common goal in the classroom.

Guided Notes in Google Classroom

Guided Notes in Google Classroom | E-learning | Scoop.it

What is the most difficult classroom management challenge? Getting students to quietly listen to the teacher for long periods of time. How can we differentiate, let students work at their own pace, be student-centered, and make classroom management easier? Stop lecturing. Google Classroom lets teachers deliver content without speaking to the whole class while still using existing resources. Here are 4 steps to making this work in Google Classroom:

The questions that matter most

The questions that matter most | E-learning | Scoop.it

As teachers we face numerous challenges as we manage our duties and strive to provide our students with the best opportunities to learn and realise their potential within a safe and supportive environment.
Take questioning as an example of a piece of our teaching that we do every day but that can require a subtlety of detail that can be skipped within a busy lesson. Begin by considering who is asking the questions? Is it predominantly the teacher asking students questions to test their knowledge or recall? Is it students asking questions to clarify information?

basil60's insight:
I don't often share stories that are "old". But questions (particularly good questions) are at the heart of good teaching and learning.

My Desk-Free, Student-First Classroom

My Desk-Free, Student-First Classroom - Bright - Medium

I have been teaching for sixteen years and I have seen remarkable changes in the classroom. I’ve seen chalkboards change to whiteboards, and whiteboards change to interactive touch screens. Desktops have been replaced with laptops, which have now morphed into Chromebooks. But recent changes in education have, for the most part, been limited to tangible items. What hasn’t been so quick to change is teachers’ mindsets in regards to the physical makeup of the classroom. I would dare say that the majority of teachers utilize desks the in the same manner that they did when they first started teaching.

What a Decade of Education Research Tells Us About Technology in the Hands of Underserved Students

What a Decade of Education Research Tells Us About Technology in the Hands of Underserved Students | E-learning | Scoop.it

Research on edtech points to an explanation of why access is not enough Specifically, Professor Mark Warschaeur (the force to be reckoned with when it comes to researching digital learning) found that "overall, students who are black, Hispanic, or low-income are more likely to use computers for drill-and-practice, whereas students who are white or high-income are more likely to use computers for simulations or authentic applications” (pg.148). This mean that access alone isn’t enough to raise the bar for underserved students.@mollybullock

Educational Leadership:Looking at Student Work:The Secret of Effective Feedback

Educational Leadership:Looking at Student Work:The Secret of Effective Feedback | E-learning | Scoop.it

It's a universal process in education—so universal that we regularly fail to appreciate its complexity. Here's how it goes: (1) A teacher looks at a piece of student work; (2) The teacher writes something on the work (sometimes a grade, sometimes a score, sometimes a comment); and (3) Later, the student looks at what the teacher has written. Of course, the idea is that what the teacher has written on the student's work improves the student's learning

We put Rigor and Relevance in the foreground, along with several other initiatives. By committing to systematic integration of the model, we transformed the culture, the conversation, as well as the results in our district. Making our classrooms truly student-centered and relevant – thereby making real rigor possible – has allowed us to shape common beliefs for student success. Here’s a little more about several key elements of our restructuring and their application of the Framework.

7 Ways to Lead People Who Don’t Want to Be Led

7 Ways to Lead People Who Don’t Want to Be Led | E-learning | Scoop.it

Leadership used to be a top-down, pyramid-style structure. The journey to the top was clearly marked. A student graduates college, finds an entry-level job sorting mail or going on coffee runs. They pay their dues, work their way up and in 15 or so years, they’re the ones ordering the coffee. Today the leadership model resembles something like herding cats. People are no longer OK with the status quo and with paying dues. They want their opinions valued and their contributions celebrated. They want to change the company with their ideas—not 15 years in the future but now.

basil60's insight:
As teachers, we're called on to lead all day every day. Our student, the teachers we teach with. And AITSL places emphasis on our ability to lead! If it can have positive influence on the future of our kids, it's gotta be worth looking into!!

Seven Ways Schools Can Foster Original Thinking in Students

Seven Ways Schools Can Foster Original Thinking in Students | E-learning | Scoop.it
My son doesn’t conform to the unspoken rules of the world. He asks too many questions. He daydreams. He makes things. But the truth is, my son isn’t unusual. He isn’t an outlier. See, every kid is weird. Every child starts out as an original thinker, but somehow along the way, so many of them learn to be compliant. They stop making. They stop dreaming. They stop asking hard questions. Some of this is due to social pressure. Some of this is due to schooling.

Making the Jump From Engaging Students to Empowering Makers

Making the Jump From Engaging Students to Empowering Makers  | E-learning | Scoop.it

Mr. Flynn was one of my favorite teachers, who just happened to teach one of my least favorite subjects: Math. Math had never come easily to me the way many English and Social Studies classes had, and so I often retreated from trying and just did enough to get by. By all accounts, Mr. Flynn should never have taken an interest in my learning journey. I spent most of his Pre-Calculus class passing notes or laughing at others goofing around. Then one day we came into class and Mr. Flynn was lying down on the back table. It seemed like a joke, but eventually we found out he had seriously hurt his back. He taught the rest of that class period lying on the back table, pointing to the chalkboard and using a yard stick to make changes.
