How Long Does it Take to Create Learning? (On Demand Corporate Training)

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Here's a fascinating presentation that parses the complexities of estimating e-learning design time.  We are talking about corporate training development, not academic facilitated course ID.

The presentation gives you hard numbers for the cost of three different levels of online on-demand course design. The costs are broken down in a number of detailed graphs.  You get to see just what it takes to develop an hour of corporate training.

If you are struggling with how to price services, or you need to justify the cost of instructional design, this presentation will serve you well.

Wondermind – Play games and explore the science of your brain

Wondermind – Play games and explore the science of your brain | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Welcome to your Wondermind
Wondermind is about a few things. It’s about the brilliant, amazing and truly mind-boggling stuff that’s going on inside your brain as you grow. It’s about the art of Alice in Wonderland, the exhibition at Tate Liverpool. And it’s about putting together both of those things: mixing art with science. Being good at one doesn’t mean you can’t be good at the other (in fact, it’s often the opposite).

Foster Self-Directed Learning In Adolescents Through E-Learning

Foster Self-Directed Learning In Adolescents Through E-Learning | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

While adults vary in their readiness for self-directed learning that seems to be needed for success in the environment in which we live, adolescents are less ready for this type of learning. As previously mentioned, self-directed learning is one of the primary functions of education. Providing 21st century skills is also a primary goal of education. There is a definite connection between preparing learners to become more self-directed as they mature and providing learners with 21st century skills. One way both can be achieved is through e-learning. In addition, the relationship between e-learning and self-directed learning is cyclical. In order to be a successful e-learner, one must also have some self-directed learning abilities. Can self-directed learning be fostered in adolescents and achieved through e-learning programs? In exchange, will learning to work in a virtual environment help adolescents become more self-directed as adults?

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I work with many beginning online teachers who are struggling to get started actually teaching online. UDEMY is one way to create your own opportunities as you develop real world experience.

Building a free course is a way to also build your credibility and expand your network. Developing a course and charging a fee is a way to make money teaching online.

Either path will teach you a lot about instructional design, video and audio production, and social media marketing.

So why not add a UDEMY course to your resume and gain some experience while you are applying for online jobs?

The New Adobe Captivate 7 Marches Backwards into the Future [Review]

The New Adobe Captivate 7 Marches Backwards into the Future [Review] | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

RJ JacquezMy biggest problem is that Captivate (and the team for that matter) is holding on to the past and is risking becoming obsolete.  There’s a mobile revolution out there and is passing this once-great product by, in the way Kodak was left behind in the new digital age. There’s nothing that I have seen in this product that tells me I should be hopeful as a Learning professional, that Adobe will help me get to the next level, by helping me develop learning that can be accessed anytime, anywhere and most importantly on every device.

Hence the title of this post.

How to Build Your Own Graphics for Online Training Courses » The Rapid eLearning Blog | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Tom Kuhlman:

At a recent workshop I was showing someone how I make some of the graphics I use for the blog. As I was showing her an idea, she said that while she already knew the basic steps what she really found valuable was watching me do it and then explain why I did what I did.

I think she’s right. It is helpful to not only know how to do something, but to also know what the person’s thinking while doing it. So in today’s post, I’ll show you how I created some graphics for a few recent blog posts. You’ll learn some production tips and gain some perspective on the choices I make.

Pearson partners with Ivy Tech for self-paced, online gen-ed courses | Inside Higher Ed | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

The media conglomerate Pearson today announced a partnership with Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana to provide online, self-paced courses that the company says will help Ivy Tech deal with student demand and overcrowding issues in required general education courses.

For Pearson, which already sells modules for instructor-led courses, the move represents a further step in the company’s strategy of inserting itself into virtually every area of e-learning short of full degree programs.

On-Demand is the Future of Online Learning | Mindflash

On-Demand is the Future of Online Learning | Mindflash | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

As a university online teacher I think of the facilitated online learning community as the gold standard of  e-learning.  At the same time the convenience and ability to scale provided by on-demand training can't be denied.

On the corporate side of the e-learning pie, on-demand learning has long been an acceptible approach.  On the academic side, on-demand doesn't sit right with many online instructors.  One tool doesn't fit all.  But on-demaind will fit some situations. ~ Dennis

---------

The On-Demand World

The future of learning will not contain very many classes at scheduled dates and times. They will be on demand. No one rushes home to turn on the television to watch a favorite program — we don’t even do that for live sports anymore. Just record it, show up late and start from the beginning. Not only do I get to attend my son’s track meet AND watch the game, but I get to fast-forward through the commercials. Imagine if your trainees could attend your training session, but could fast-forward through the breaks and the dead time between discussions. They could finish a three-hour class in 90 minutes.

We Are Not That Different - By Elliott Masie

We Are Not That Different - By Elliott Masie | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Learning spans the lifetime. Yet, learning there is little collaboration between K-12, College and Corporate Learning. We do little sharing, almost no common research and rarely leverage technologies across our sectors.

Educators need to connect with and learn from each other.

Sit next to me on a plane and ask what I do for a living. I'll say I am in the learning field. You will immediately try to guess if I am a college professor, a high school principal, a third grade teacher or perhaps a corporate CLO.

On the ground, what each of those professions do is quite different. A third grade teacher may spend six hours a day, five days a week, 45 weeks a year with the same 24 students. A college professor may spend three hours a week in a classroom or in an online webinar with a group as small as five or as large as 800, followed by office hours, assignments, final papers, exams and the assignment of grades. A corporate trainer may lead a three-hour on-boarding session or an intensive 12-hour-a-day leadership retreat that lasts five days.

Yet, zoom out to the 3,000-foot-high level and we each face similar issues, challenges, opportunities, changes and research questions:
