Alan Campbell: Relevance and The UW-Stout e-Learning Certificate | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Alan Campbell:

My mind was restless and I was looking for my next challenge. I received an email from Joan Vandervelde promoting an E-learning and Online Graduate Certificate. I read the fine print and decided the program would enhance my ability to support a blended classroom. By the end of my first course, I had started my own website and blog. In all of the courses, the interaction between students and instructors has been tantalizing. The exposure to new resources, at times overwhelming, has been exciting. The experience has been both humbling and fulfilling. My mind is left to ask, "What's next?"

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Alan is currently enrolled in the E-Learning Practicum. This blog entry started out as a reflection on the relevance and impact of the UW-Stout's E-Learning Graduate Certificate program. Alan is a powerful teacher; online, blended or face to face.  His commitment to life long learning jumps off the page.

Read his blog: the simple teacher.  You will be glad you did!

Do I Need a Digital Teaching Portfolio?

Do I Need a Digital Teaching Portfolio? | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Designing a well-organized and professional teaching portfolio can give you an edge in a competitive job market, and help you score high marks on your school's teacher evaluation form. It is, however, a time-consuming endeavor (the average portfolio takes about two to three days of work), and once built, your portfolio will require regular attention.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Participants in UW-Stout's E-Learning and Online Teaching Graduate Certificate Program develop an e-Portfolio as they work through the program. During the Practicum (a mentored online teaching experience) the portfolio is polished for a final peer review.

Honor the eyes and brains of your readers: Whitespace

Honor the eyes and brains of your readers: Whitespace | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

By Mark Boulton:

“Whitespace,” or “negative space” is the space between elements in a composition. More specifically, the space between major elements in a composition is “macro whitespace.” Micro whitespace, is—yes, you’ve guessed it—the space between smaller elements: between list items, between a caption and an image, or between words and letters. The itty-bitty stuff.

So what does whitespace do?

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This vintage (2007) article explains the importance of whitespace in web design.  When we read online our brains crave easy to scan text that doesn't overload the senses.  It's a basic lesson that every instructional designer and online teacher should take to heart.

Tony Bates: Resources on e-portfolios

Tony Bates: Resources on e-portfolios | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Tony Bates:

"In education, a ‘portfolio’ refers to a personal collection of information describing, documenting and recording a person’s achievements and learning. Portfolios are used for many different purposes such as a tool for evaluating leaning, for accreditation of prior experience, for continuing professional development, to assist a job application, or for a certification of competences acquired through a course or from work experience . An educational portfolio is mainly used to encourage personal reflection and involves the exchange of ideas and feedback. Many people have already used some kind of portfolio. Most of them have built a portfolio to collect evidence required to get certificates or to show what they have learned in a concrete situation or training. The development of information and learning technologies has led to the development of digital portfolios or electronic portfolios, commonly referred as e-Portfolios."

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Bates has filtered the Internet for e-portfolio resources and panned out some pure gold.

Bonjour!  Welcome to my French 2 unit,  À la maison.  This unit was created for my face-to-face French 2 class and adapted for the virtual classroom as part of my Assessment in E-Learning course through the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

As you read through this unit, you will find the demographic information for my current teaching position at Lake Mills High School, as well as the course content and description for my face-to-face class.  While the learning objectives remain the same, the delivery, as seen in the Unit Overview and the Learning Objectives, utilizes assessments that will be used in a virtual classroom
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Here is a well designed, in-depth unit suitable for high school or college French classes.  It was designed by Ellen Onsrud, a talented online and face to face teacher who recently graduated from the UW-Stout E-Learning and Online Teaching program. You'll appreciate the detailed assessments provided in this unit! (Way to go Ellen!)

Expanding My Horizons by Victoria Thornley, MSN, RN, CNE | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

An E-portfolio developed  for the University of Wisconsin - Stout Graduate Certificate in E-Learning and Online Teaching where I started  in 2013.  I decided that I wanted to know more about online education.  With the rapid changes in technology and internet access, it appeared to me that online courses would flourish.  I found the E- Learning and Online Teaching graduate certificate program from University of Wisconsin – Stout.

Within this electronic portfolio you will find demonstrations of my learning.  Each course required the submission of artifacts to the portfolio.  I have selected artifacts from the courses listed above to present in this final portfolio as evidence of my learning and my ability to excel as an online educator.  The links lead to course work I have done that demonstrates my learning of course design, student assessment, online facilitation, and finally my reflections on my own learning. One additional link provides examples of learning projects I completed during the courses.

I hope you enjoy my journey as I expanded my horizons.    ~Vicki

f you decide to use Pinterest as a resume or portfolio tool, you have two options: create a board or whole account to showcase your skills. If you create a board, it will be one URL and one stream with all of your resume/portfolio items. If you have enough items that pulling them into one stream could be too cluttered, you could create a dedicated Pinterest account with several boards to organize your items into. What your best option is will depend on your profession and experience level.
