Distance Learning is well known concept but still hasn't reached its full potential. This post explores what distance learning still has to offer us.
Distance learning, sometimes a combination of asynchronous and real time, online learning, is evolving in my board. Replacing some aspects of night school and summer school, it has been called both virtual learning and elearning. Part of the problem is the limitation of the LMS, or learning platform. We use Desire 2 Learn and Adobe Connect, the former as a repository of modules with some interaction, and the latter as place to teach lessons, and construct videos. Another part of the problem is that teachers lack sufficient expertise to take advantage of this mode of teaching. Lastly, the responsibility and discipline required of the student over a 4-5 period of a semester, or the concentrated 1 month in the summer, is too difficult for some students to gain and maintain momentum. I look forward to seeing how this type of learning evolves with MOOCs, moodle, Desire 2 Learn, Google Sites, Blackboard, etc. It can only improve.
We have had distance learning for some time. We do it poorly and just because technology appears does not mean it will be better. We lack effective leadership for that.

When students are doing research, they sometimes struggle with citing their sources or moving beyond a quick search with Google.com. The Google Docs Research Pane helps to facilitate searching for and citing sources. By going to Tools –> Research, the Research Pane pops up on the right hand side! You can search Google, images, scholar, quotes, and dictionary! By dragging and dropping certain content (e.g. images), not only will the material appear, but a footnote (in MLA, Chicago, or APA format).
Super cool. I had no idea this feature existed!
Great tips for how to integrate use of GoogleDocs into research activites to help support ethical use of information.

I've no stake in the death of the academic tenure system. It is entertaining to see this system described with a dash of gonzo cynicism. There is a screaming need for well trained brains... but the demands are outside the walls of academia.

Morris, S.M. and Stommel, J. (2013) A Bill of Rights and Principles for Learning in the Digital Age Hybrid Pedagogy,
" The question then comes to my mind as to why it has been necessary to spend time discussing and agreeing on principles and rights that most people in public education already accept. One reason I suspect is a concern that developments in online learning outside formal, public education have the potential to run roughshod over these rights and principles. For instance, highly selective, campus-based, elite universities, at least until very recently, have not subscribed to some of these rights and principles, yet are now ‘discovering’ open learning through MOOCs, while still denying many of these rights to potential on-campus students."-online-learners/#sthash.eZpqTl5m.dpuf
