Teaching Practices Inventory Provides Tool to Help You Examine Your Teaching

Teaching Practices Inventory Provides Tool to Help You Examine Your Teaching | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Maryellen Weimer, PhD:

Here’s a great resource: the Teaching Practices Inventory. It’s an inventory that lists and scores the extent to which research-based teaching practices are being used. It’s been developed for use in math and science courses, but researchers Carl Wieman and Sarah Gilbert suggest it can be used in engineering and social sciences courses, although they have not tested it there. I suspect it has an even wider application. Most of the items on the inventory are or could be practiced in most disciplines and programs

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This inventory, published by the University of British Columbia was developed by an impressive team from Canada, headed by Nobel Prize winning physicist Carl Wieman.  Fine research. Deep and worth the dive.

Instructor Characteristics That Affect Online Student Success | Faculty Focus | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Which online instructor characteristics help students succeed? It’s a rather basic question that has not been adequately answered. We did a literature search to find if anybody had done any research from the students’ perspective on what constitutes a quality online instructor.

Best Practices in Online Teaching for Student Engagement | Teaching and Learning Initiative

Best Practices in Online Teaching for Student Engagement | Teaching and Learning Initiative | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Overview
Many theorists predict that online education will gradually surpass traditional classrooms in the role of educating students in higher education....

The growing trend toward online education is self-evident through the increasing popularity of online universities such as University of Phoenix, Kaplan University, Strayer University and many others. Economic trends have forced more and more disenfranchised individuals out of the workforce and into a situation of needing to achieve a higher education to improve their chances for employability; many of the students in these online colleges and universities are students over 25, with families, and some with full- or part-time jobs.

Abstract

As a core project, a university eLearning Pedagogy Faculty Learning Community (FLC) chose to apply recommendations for the “art” of good teaching to the online realm. There is relatively little discussion of this issue in the literature. In this paper, we use Bain’s (2004) book What the Best College Teachers Do to discuss some of the major ways that the practices of effective teaching in general can be applied to online teaching in particular. Specifically, we explore methods of fostering student engagement, stimulating intellectual development, and building rapport with students when teaching online. This analysis provides a much-needed “art of teaching” set of recommendations that complements the “science of teaching” best practices approach to online pedagogy.

A Quality Scorecard for the Administration of Online Education Programs | The Sloan Consortium®

A Quality Scorecard for the Administration of Online Education Programs | The Sloan Consortium® | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

This scorecard is for measuring and quantifying elements of quality within online education programs in higher education. It is an easy-to-use tool for online administrators for program evaluation. By evaluating each of the respective quality indicators within the established categories, an online administrator can determine strengths and weaknesses of their program. The identification of the weaknesses can be used to support program improvement and strategic planning initiatives. The scorecard could also be used to demonstrate to accrediting bodies, elements of quality within the program as well as an overall level of quality.

The scorecard contains 70 quality indicators--each indicator is worth up to three points. The administrator will determine at what level their program meets the intent of the quality indicator after examining all procedures and processes.

Distance Education: Guidelines for Good Practice

Distance Education: Guidelines for Good Practice | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
These guidelines drawn from what we know today amid a constantly changing landscape-are not in any way designed to be the "last word" on the subject. We have attempted to make our standards high without being unattainable, specific without being rigid. We have also tried to go "deeper" than a number of other guidelines we have reviewed.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This includes standards for online teacher preparation that make sense and establish a solid foundation for schools going into online education. Although somewhat dated, this article provides a very good foundation for all working in distance education.

Promising Practices in Online Learning - iNACOL

Promising Practices in Online Learning - iNACOL | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

The most well established K-12 online learning programs are more than ten years old, and many programs have between five and ten years of operating experience. The newest programs are building on the expertise of those early adopters, as well as the experience of online learning in postsecondary institutions and the corporate world. A body of knowledge, skills and practices has been developed by individual programs, in collaboration with practitioners, researchers, and policymakers. Because there are so many types of online programs (full-time, supplemental, stateled, district-level, consortium), there are also many different approaches to teaching, student support, professional development, and other issues.
