David Jakes: Midwest Google Summit | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

David Jakes: The keynote takes me into new territory, and is a reflection of my new work at The Third Teacher Plus and Cannon Design in Chicago.  It’s a brand new presentation, which can be interesting in front of a large audience, but its something I’ve done before and enjoy.   It’s my belief that an audience should hear your most current beliefs and ideas in a keynote, and that it should be an honest conversation with the audience.  If the delivery is not perfect, that’s ok, because ultimately, the ideas are the most important thing.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

David's a terrific thinker with a world of experience.  Go if you have a chance!

They say a house is only as good as its foundation, and we believe the same holds true for web applications like Google Docs.

With our old foundation, we could continue delivering most features you wanted quickly, but over time it became clear that some just weren’t possible. So we decided to rebuild the underlying infrastructure of Docs to give us greater flexibility, improved performance and a better platform for developing new features quickly.

Today, we’re pleased to announce preview versions of the new Google document and spreadsheet editors and a new standalone drawings editor, all built with an even greater focus on speed and collaboration. To get a taste of what’s new today, check out our video:

Prezi - The Zooming Presentation Editor

Prezi - The Zooming Presentation Editor | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Prezi is a web-based presentation application and storytelling tool that uses a single canvas instead of traditional slides. Text, images, videos and other presentation objects are placed on the infinite canvas and grouped together in frames. The canvas allows users to create non-linear presentations, where users can zoom in and out of a visual map.[1] A path through different objects and frames can be defined, representing the order of the information to be presented. The presentation can be developed in a browser window, then downloaded so that an Internet connection is not needed when showing the presentation.

A Presentation App That Forces You To Tell Better Stories

A Presentation App That Forces You To Tell Better Stories | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
While you’re probably not guilty of mucking up complex geopolitical strategy with your bad slides, chances are you’ve made some crappy ones--or, at the very least, been subjected to some--at one point or another. So the appeal of Haiku Deck, a free app for the iPad, should be clear. As founder Adam Tratt explained to me: "We wanted to make it impossible to create ugly [slides]."

The app, as its name suggests, is all about brevity, enabling users to make clean, concise slide shows--or decks--with a heavily streamlined feature set. Using it is fiendishly simple: You enter a few keywords of text onto a slide, and the app searches a database of over 35 million Creative Commons images that suit your subject. If your text says "Fierce Dedication," you might get an artful shot of a tiger or a football team to use as the slide’s background (though you can always use a photo of your own). Finding that compelling image for you, Tratt says, is one of Haiku Deck’s key achievements. "People spend a ton of time doing this manually … so we thought we could really delight our users if we made the process just happen automagically, and then embed the Creative Commons attribution right in the deck."

Presentation Skills: Five Things You Need To Know About People To Deliver Great Presentations

Robin Good: A short video doodle illustrating how five underconsidered factors have tremendous impact on the quality of your presentations, whether online or live.

Habilidades necesarias para lograr una presentación exitosa con tu audiencia

Jean Luc lebrun's curator insight, June 9, 2014 4:46 PM

Behind these video doodles is an fun company: www.truscribe.com

What is interesting here is that the video is in perfect sync with the audio - this is why it is so powerful..

More critically, something is missing from the video: a summary. The author summarizes with "So there you have it, five things you need to know about people in order to give a better presentation", followed by a rapid zoom out revealing briefly ALL the pictures from the storyboard - too many and too fast to be of use as a memory prop.

Five may be a small number, but for our limited memory - it is huge. We have to remember five more or less disconnected ideas: 20 minute chunks, eye competes with ear, your speech is only a part of whole message (see nice screen illustration at time 3:36), call them to action, people imitate your feelings. It feels like a bullet list. The video could have brought back 5 key images corresponding to the 5 points to help anchor them in our memory.

This is why I recommend that the "take-away" slide, a.k.a. the conclusion or summary slide, refreshes people's memory by bringing back small pictures of the key visuals of the presentation next to the text points that they helped make. It does not matter if they are not fully readable, their role is simply to jog memory.
