COFA Talks Online | COFA Cracks the Merlot | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

A video-based program helping teachers in 138 countries step into the virtual classroom, has earned its developers a prestigious international award.

Learning to Teach Online is a series of online video and PDF resources developed at UNSW's College of Fine Arts.

Funded by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council, the project supports teachers in any discipline who are new to online learning.

Project leaders, COFA's Simon McIntyre and Karin Watson, have been awarded the 2012 MERLOT Award for Exemplary Online Learning Resources. They will be presenting at the 5th Annual International Symposium for Emerging Technologies for Online Learning in the United States later this year.

Learning To Teach Online is no newcomer to awards - the project won the 2011 Innovation and Excellence Award from the Australasian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education (Ascilite).

10 Commandments of Twitter for Academics - Do Your Job Better - The Chronicle of Higher Education

10 Commandments of Twitter for Academics - Do Your Job Better - The Chronicle of Higher Education | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

1. Put up an avatar. It doesn't really matter what the picture is, but the "egg picture" (the default avatar for new accounts) makes you look like a spammer.

2. Don't pick a Twitter name that is difficult to spell or remember.

3. Tweet regularly.

4. Don't ignore people who tweet at you. Set Twitter to send you an e-mail notification when you get a mention or a private message. If you don't do that, then check your account frequently.

5. Engage in conversation. Don't just drop in to post your own update and disappear. Twitter is not a "broadcast-only" mechanism; it's CB radio.

TechCrunch | Move Over Harvard And MIT, Stanford Has The Real “Revolution In Education”

TechCrunch | Move Over Harvard And MIT, Stanford Has The Real “Revolution In Education” | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Lectures are often the least educational aspect of college; I know, I've taught college seniors and witnessed how little students learn during their four years in higher education.

So, last week, two Stanford professors made a courageous proposal to ditch lectures in the medical school. “For most of the 20th century, lectures provided an efficient way to transfer knowledge, But in an era with a perfect video-delivery platform — one that serves up billions of YouTube views and millions of TED Talks on such things as technology, entertainment, and design — why would anyone waste precious class time on a lecture?,” write Associate Medical School dean, Charles Prober and business professor, Chip Heath, in The New England Journal of Medicine. Instead, they call for an embrace of the “flipped” classroom, where students review Khan Academy’s YouTube lectures at home and solve problems alongside professors in the classroom. Students seem to love the idea: when Stanford piloted the flipped classroom in a Biochemistry course, attendance ballooned from roughly 30% to 80%.

Is Montessori The Origin Of Google & Amazon? - Forbes

Is Montessori The Origin Of Google & Amazon? - Forbes | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
The Montessori learning method establishes a collaborative environment without grades or tests, multi-aged classrooms, as well as self-directed learning and discovery for long blocks of time.

Montessori methods go against the grain of traditional educational methods but they have uncanny parallels in the success of their alumni:

Google [[GOOG] wasn’t launched by Larry Page and Sergei Brin as a brilliant vision, but rather as a project to improve library searches, followed by a series of small discoveries that unlocked a revolutionary business model.

Amazon’s [AMZN] strategy by Jeff Bezos involves developing ideas in new markets similar to “planting seeds” or “going down blind alleys.” Amazon’s executives learn and uncover opportunities as they go, with many dead ends but also sometimes a huge, broad avenue.
