The Atlantic: Teachers' Most Rewarding Moments

The Atlantic: Teachers' Most Rewarding Moments | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
From teachers: The biggest reward is seeing students motivated.

When you work with students, you can't help but be inspired. I reached out through my networks to ask teachers: "What is the most inspirational thing that has happened in your classroom in the last few years?"

As I reviewed the responses, a definite pattern emerged. Ultimately, the legacy and relationship between student and teacher remains strong, although sometimes it takes years to see the results. Additionally, the evolving pedagogy of the classroom to integrate technology, social media, and global collaboration has students and teachers even more excited about learning.

How to Create a Portfolio with Evernote (Education Series)

How to Create a Portfolio with Evernote (Education Series) | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

By Rob Van Nood

When I first started researching options, I was coming across a lot of companies that were really expensive, charging a lot for each student’s use. I also knew that we needed an app for mobile devices that would make it easy to capture and document paperwork and I wasn’t finding that in most of the tools I was evaluating. Evernote was free, had an app for virtually every device, and we could get started right away.

By Brian Bennett

The Flipped Classroom is gaining steam in schools across the world. Flipped classes focus on student interaction and engagement in class and a major component is the technology that can be used to create, deliver, and collaborate. Richard has posted on many of these tools, so I’ll be sharing how I use a combination of tools in a typical unit.

Navigating the web is only one application of the framework we built - that is, we envision all sorts of applications that run in the browser, from games to specific utilities for specific sites. The great part is that now web developers who specialize in Javascript can work with the Kinect without having to learn any special languages or code. We believe this will allow a new set of interactions beyond what we first developed.

I accepted and decided to reach out to the usual suspects, those in my professional crowd who know the research, for their inputs. As I am but a practitioner attempting to follow what I have learned over the years about the research, I am not steeped in that research and able to cite it, they can.
Here is some of what I got back that day and shared with Jane to show her I was "on it."

How to Record Screencasts on your iPad or iPhone

How to Record Screencasts on your iPad or iPhone | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Whether you are an app developer building cool apps or games for the mobile platform or a tech blogger who likes to review such apps, what you definitely want is a screencasting tool that will help you easily record movies of your mobile app.

Now there are tons of screencasting apps available for your Windows or Mac desktop but if you wish to capture the screen of your iPad or iPhone, the scene is very disappointing. A search for “screen recorder” or “screencasting” shows zero results in the iTunes app store.

That said, there are ways, or rather workarounds, by which you can capture the screen activity of your iPad or iPhone and convert that into a movie. Let’s take a look:

Option 1. Create a Screencast Video using Screenshot Images

A first-hand look inside a flipped classroom | eSchool News | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

To help peers and skeptics better understand the concept of flipped learning, Jon Bergmann and Aaron Sams, high school science teachers and pioneers in the Flipped Class ideology, created a first-of-its kind flipped classroom “open house” on Jan. 30, which invited other educators to see how flipped learning works and what students have to say about it. The event took place in two countries, 20 states, and more than 30 cities and towns.

Variety of Models Fuels Hybrid Charter Growth | Education Week | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

In innovation-friendly pockets across the country, the number of hybrid charter schools—those that blend online and face-to-face instruction—has been growing over the past five years.

But now, the educational model seems to have shifted into overdrive.

Major philanthropies—most notably, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—have launched funding initiatives directed specifically at hybrid school models, which because of their unorthodox ways of allocating resources often are able to operate best as charter schools.

With Augmented Reality, Wallit App Assigns Virtual Walls to Physical Places | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Released Tuesday for iPhone and iTouch, Wallit is hailed by Berk as the world’s first “social augmented reality app.” Like Facebook, it enables you to interact with your friends. Like Twitter, it only lets you write in short 140-character bursts. Like Foursquare, its digital benefits are based on where you go in the real world. But Wallit combines these features — and more — in an entirely new way.
The app is essentially a virtual wall for physical locations.

Getting Students to Act on Our Feedback | Faculty Focus

Getting Students to Act on Our Feedback | Faculty Focus | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
I’m still pondering why students don’t make better use of the feedback we provide on papers, projects, presentations, even the whole class feedback we offer after we’ve graded a set of exams.

It takes a lot of time and effort to provide students with good feedback. Most faculty I know tackle the task seriously and conscientiously. We should be getting a better return on our investment. You’d think as grade-oriented as students are, they would want to do better on subsequent assignments, and would use the teacher feedback to help them accomplish that goal.
