The Digital Education Revolution, Cont'd: Meet TED-Ed's New Online Learning Platform

The Digital Education Revolution, Cont'd: Meet TED-Ed's New Online Learning Platform | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

By Megan Garber

"TED-Ed is launching a suite of tools that allow teachers to design their own web-assisted curricula, complete with videos, comprehension-testing questions, and conversational tools. TED-Ed provides a template -- think Power Point slides, with populate-able fields -- that teachers can fill in with customized content: lesson titles, lesson links, student names, embedded video, test questions, and the like. Once saved, a lesson generates a unique URL, which allows teachers to track which students have watched assigned videos, how they've responded to follow-up questions, and, in general, how they've interacted with the lesson itself."

Why Universities Will Be the Biggest Awarder of Badges (and When) | iterating toward openness

Why Universities Will Be the Biggest Awarder of Badges (and When) | iterating toward openness | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

As interest in badges continues to increase, it occurs to me that in their passion for gameification, innovation, and outright reinvention, many in the field are overlooking the place where badges make the most sense of all – the formal higher education institution. There are at least two high-level reasons why higher education is the perfect place for badging.

Jennifer Golightly, Ph.D.

Increasing student retention in online courses involves a combination of strategies that can be deployed at both the institutional and the course levels. This article will present a few of these strategies with some research-based analysis of the ways in which each will contribute to student retention in the online classroom; the most important of these strategies include institutional recognition of the wide variety of factors that may have an impact on student retention in online programs as well as the importance of course design in order to maximize retention rates.

A Collaborative Guide to Best Digital Learning Practices for K-12 | DMLcentral

A Collaborative Guide to Best Digital Learning Practices for K-12 | DMLcentral | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

To teach responsibly in a digital age, we have to respect what our tools can do to help us learn together -- and what tools alone cannot do. We need to be prepared to adapt them to our specific needs as teachers and learners. We need tools that are as open as possible, that are designed to encourage students to participate and not simply consume. And we need to support teachers who are also learning how to use new tools for the most innovative, imaginative, interactive teaching.

Early Participation in Asynchronous Writing Environments and Course Success | The Sloan Consortium

Early Participation in Asynchronous Writing Environments and Course Success | The Sloan Consortium | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Multiple Authors

Abstract:

"Many researchers have documented connections between student motivation/proactive student behavior and academic success. This study investigates if early participation on course message boards is connected with success in online and hybrid courses. Investigating 12 first-year writing classes, eight hybrid and four fully online, the authors found that first posters on course message boards had better grades than the class final average in every course, and later posters tended to have lower grades than the course average. The researchers also correlated course performance with average length of posts, finding earlier posts to be longer. This study was conducted in two phases, with the researchers initially investigating six courses and then engaging in a more robust analysis with additional metrics of six additional courses. The results provide teachers with evidence to support the connection between student volition and success in classes that rely heavily on learning in asynchronous writing environments."

No More Walls: Why Virtual Learning Is So Appealing

No More Walls: Why Virtual Learning Is So Appealing | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Barriers are falling that once separated virtual learning from the traditional K–12 approach centered on face-to-face classroom interaction. Thirty percent of high school students and 19 percent of middle schoolers took at least one online class in 2010, according to a 2011 report sponsored by the national nonprofit group Project Tomorrow. Scheduling flexibility, control over their own learning and the ability to work at their own pace were the top benefits cited by students who had taken virtual courses.

I developed these nine steps in response to requests about how to ensure quality when starting an online course or program. Now there are lots of excellent e-learning quality assurance standards, organizations and research available online, and I’m not going to duplicate these. Instead, I’m going to suggest a series of practical steps towards implementing such standards.
