TechCrunch | Jailbreaking the Degree

TechCrunch | Jailbreaking the Degree | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
The traditional degree, with its four-year time commitment and steep price tag, made sense when the university centrally aggregated top academic minds with residency-based students. Education required extensive logistics, demanding deep commitment from students worthy of being rewarded with the all-or-nothing degree.

But education isn’t all-or-nothing. College and its primary credential, the degree, needn’t be either. The benefit of modern, online education is that the burden of logistics and infrastructure are greatly reduced, allowing for the potential of a fluid, lifelong education model. The problem, to date, is that formal, online education is still being packaged in all-or-nothing degree programs, falsely constraining education innovation. The New Republic writes, “Online for-profit colleges haven’t disrupted the industry because while their business methods are different, their product—traditional credentials in the form of a degree—is not.”

Sunday Reflection: What comes after the higher education bubble? | Washington Examiner

Sunday Reflection: What comes after the higher education bubble? | Washington Examiner | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

I've written here in the past about the higher education bubble -- how the costs of college and graduate or professional school have been inflated by the availability of cheap federal money. This has created a situation in which there are many more indebted graduates than there are jobs capable of paying off the loans.

We are now seeing some signs that the market is catching up. Enrollment numbers are softening, students are becoming more reluctant to borrow money to pay for an education and the phrase "higher education bubble" is appearing more and more often in discussions of education policy and student indebtedness.

Writing learning outcomes or learning objectives — Faculty Development | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Learning outcomes specify the intended endpoint of a period of engagement in specified learning activities. They are written in the future tense and should clearly indicate the nature and/or level of learning required to achieve them successfully. Khan’s Big Contribution Will Be Competency-Based Learning

Khan’s Big Contribution Will Be Competency-Based Learning | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Carrie introduced Sal Khan whose videos have been an important contribution to global learning. His 3100 videos receive about 6 million views every month. But in the long run, his most important contribution may be to the shift to personalized competency-based learning.

Sal describes the use of hierarchical learning maps to ensure comprehensive learning. A logical sequence of instruction is common in music where students progress as they demonstrate mastery. Karate has a series of belts that signify demonstrated mastery. It doesn’t matter how old you are, you need to show what you can do to progress.

Scenarios in elearning: Why they're better than quiz questions | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

“Why do you want to use scenarios?” your client asks. “Why can’t we use the quizzes that we’ve always used?”

Sometimes the best way to convince a client is to show them through examples. Present one of their quiz questions three ways, so the client can see for themselves the deeper thought required by a scenario-style question.

Here’s an example. What kind of thinking is required by each type of question?
