Using Online Icebreakers to Promote Student/Teacher Interaction | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

In an online environment, human interaction does not just happen naturally. Your online students need a way to get to know you, the instructor, and others. There are several ways to encourage your students to interact with each other. The idea is to be creative and set several guidelines for students to follow in order to stimulate asynchronous discussions.

Understanding the Instructor’s Role in Facilitating Online Discussions - Faculty Focus | Faculty Focus

Understanding the Instructor’s Role in Facilitating Online Discussions - Faculty Focus | Faculty Focus | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
As I reviewed course evaluations after my first year of online teaching, an unexpected theme emerged: several students mentioned they wished I had been a bigger part of their discussions, primarily so they would know if they were on the right track. I naively assumed my silence during group discussion would be taken as evidence by students that their discussions were right on target, but this was not the case at all. Students needed more reassurance, especially since I was asking them to take very big risks in terms of explaining their understanding of a content area that was often new and challenging for them..

Five Reasons Getting Students to Talk is Worth the Effort | Faculty Focus

Five Reasons Getting Students to Talk is Worth the Effort | Faculty Focus | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

It may seem odd but getting students to talk is a positive pedagogical strategy, even though their discourse is a novice’s discourse.

Professor Maryellen Weimer describes 5 reasons to prove that students talking is worth the effort:

1- Students learn content when they talk about it.

2- Talking lets students learn from each other.

3- Talking gives students the opportunity to practice using the language of the discipline.

4- Talking connects students with the content.

5-Talking connects students with each other.

It’s the task of the teacher to face the challenge, promote and support students, for example, by adding form and substance to the discussions.

ISTE 2012 or Bust — The Digital Shift

ISTE 2012 or Bust — The Digital Shift | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Attending ISTE 2012 in San Diego is a no-brainer. I plan to present on the Hollywood Squares panel, which will address recent education and technology research, with some of the same school library and ed-tech rock stars that I was so ecstatic to meet back in 2010. I also look forward to bringing along another classroom teacher to experience ISTE and get inspired by the new ideas it offers. Although I hate missing ALA’s annual conference, attending ISTE and soaking up its unique culture is the most important thing I can do for myself each year as a library media specialist.

If you are a presenter, please be sure to use a variety of media in your presentation. Incorporate a back channel or shared document, use video (edit it to be under 60 seconds - trust me on this one), and leave time for questions. Know your material and be sure there is at least one big takeaway related to your session description. Also, look at your slide deck and think about revamping the slides. Keep in mind that further information, resources and materials can be included on a website that you clearly post on your slides (in a shortened URL).

Augmented Reality in education - ARLab Blog | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Imagine how those boring history lessons at school would be if the children would watch an augmented view of the lesson, like a 3D Solar System Model or Galileu talking directly to them, and they were able to interact with this augmented information. Children learn better the lesson if they see it like a game.

The Learning Power of LEGO| The Committed Sardine

The Learning Power of LEGO| The Committed Sardine | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Everybody loves LEGO, and it was certainly an exciting part of my own childhood. Like many other kids who were that age, I revelled in letting my imagination take over as I built pretty much anything I could think of. As you create, a whole back story evolves behind what you've made with your LEGO, and there are no limitations. That's what makes it such a great learning tool—this is pure creative power. This infographic shows just how successful it can be as an educational resource.
