The Emerging Landscape of Educational Delivery Models

The Emerging Landscape of Educational Delivery Models | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Phil Hill: What I believe we are seeing in 2011 and 2012 is a transition to an educational system no longer dominated by traditional education and one or two alternative models. As my colleague Molly Langstaff has described, educational technology and new educational courses and programs are interacting to create new language and models for education. What does this emerging landscape of educational delivery models look like?

4 options for Moodle hosting on Amazon Web Services Marketplace | Moodle News

4 options for Moodle hosting on Amazon Web Services Marketplace | Moodle News | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

You can now get Moodle from three different vendors all suited to run Moodle in the cloud and have the choice of 32 or 64 bit. Moodle 2.2+ anyone?

I am currently running Moodle 2.2 for a test site through BitNami Cloud and am quite happy with the results (and responsiveness). The solutions are totally scalable, the smallest installation costing around $30 per month to run. Increasing computer power (ram/HD storage) will increase the monthly fees and baseline. Pay for what you use. If the site is for testing and playing only you can easily “turn off” the servers to conserve resources ($).

Welcome to the Moodle Mayhem wiki, a site dedicated to sharing what is going on with Moodle in K-12.
Wondering why focus on a wiki solution when Moodle has it all? Well, Moodles are, by their design, closed environments. It is hoped that combining the ease of use of a wiki with Moodle resources sharing and an email list, we will all be able to build on this project.

80 Educational Alternatives to YouTube

80 Educational Alternatives to YouTube | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Kids learn best when they see how things work, when, where and why they happen. Watching educational videos is a great way to learn because it allows kids to build a visual picture or model in their mind. The visual dimension not only helps them understand concepts better but also stimulates curiosity and encourages self-training.

Report: Quality Control in K-12 Digital Learning: Three (Imperfect) Approaches | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

"Will the move toward virtual and “blended learning” schools in American education repeat the mistakes of the charter-school movement, or will it learn from them?... Finding ways to define, monitor, and police quality in this brave new world is one of the central challenges in realizing the potential of digital learning."

Learning is not something to get | Harold Jarche

Learning is not something to get | Harold Jarche | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

When times were tough, training departments slashed budgets by replacing face-to-face instruction with online reading. They failed to follow through with the discussions, practice, social processing, and reinforcement that makes lessons stick. It didn’t work. Most eLearning is ineffective drudgery. ~ Jay Cross

How It Works | MIT + K12 Making Video to make a difference

How It Works | MIT + K12 Making Video to make a difference | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

This site was built around a simple idea: K12 educators and MIT should be working together to make movies. No one would argue that STEM education in the U.S. is in tough shape. Teachers want to do something about it, and so do MIT students.

Well, here's your chance.

Educators can submit ideas for experiments or demonstrations they would like to see an MIT student perform and explain in a short video (5-10 minutes long) that will be made available online.
MIT students can then "check out" these assignments (in the library sense of that phrase) — or they can come up with their own ideas and check them out themselves.

Infinite Thinking Machine

What is the Infinite Thinking Machine?

First launched in 2006, the Infinite Thinking Machine (ITM) is a high-energy Internet TV show directly targeted at K-12 educators, parents and students. Our goal is to inspire creativity and innovation in education.

New episodes are released fortnightly (Google it!) during the school year. The show features a classroom teacher as its host, engaging educators as "Field Trip" correspondents and amazing innovators as guests. Innovative approaches to education are showcased, and the teachers, administrators and students behind them are celebrated. Special segments like 'HackEd' address deeper topics head-on, challenging conventional edu-thinking. Currently in its second season, the ITM depends on a mix of funding from its producing organization, education partners and corporate sponsors.

A Must-Have Guide To Google Drive | Edudemic | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

We’re chomping at the bit to get our grimy little hands on the new Google Drive. We wrote about it in our March issue of the Edudemic Magazine, featured it a couple weeks ago, and now want to start figuring out how the basically-real tool will help teachers around the planet. After all, that’s what Edudemic is all about! We throw caution to the wind and just start trying to figure out fun and useful ways to use technology in the classroom. Who cares if that technology isn’t available yet?

Pearson partners with Ivy Tech for self-paced, online gen-ed courses | Inside Higher Ed | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

The media conglomerate Pearson today announced a partnership with Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana to provide online, self-paced courses that the company says will help Ivy Tech deal with student demand and overcrowding issues in required general education courses.

For Pearson, which already sells modules for instructor-led courses, the move represents a further step in the company’s strategy of inserting itself into virtually every area of e-learning short of full degree programs.

eLearning at Science & Engineering: Is OER mainstreamed and sustainable?

eLearning at Science & Engineering: Is OER mainstreamed and sustainable? | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

I should state before I even get started on this post, that I am a big advocate of openness; I have managed a JISC-funded project on OER and am currently researching aspects of the 'movement'. However, this is the first post in a series that I'm calling 'Sceptic Week' (a few posts that will critically reflect upon and question movements that I fully support). So, without further ado, this post will question two common tenets: mainstreaming and sustaining...
