Managing: The Nuts & Bolts of an iPad Classroom...

Awhile ago, I wrote about the beginning of the one-to-one iPad journey in my classroom. I have always appreciated when others have shared not only their pedagogy, but the organization of their tools or classroom as well. I’ve also had more people ask me questions about my set-up than how I use iPads to actually teach in my classroom, so here’s my “share”.

The Future of Undergraduate Teaching - WorldWise - The Chronicle of Higher Education

The Future of Undergraduate Teaching - WorldWise - The Chronicle of Higher Education | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Here is one possible scenario. First, most teaching in the early years of an undergraduate degree will gradually cease to be via lectures and will instead take the form of online presentations produced by professionally trained presenters backed up by teams of academics. This online content will be paralleled by peer tuition (or teaching by questioning) which, when done well, is clearly effective (see here and here), and the associated growth of so-called learning analytics. Lectures may well become special occasions in which the best-known academics make their presence felt. Meanwhile, small group teaching will make a come-back in all years, especially in the best universities. In other words, a new hybrid will take the place of the old, one in which I suspect that face-to-face experience and other forms of direct experience (like international experience) will actually become more valued.

How Exercise Can Jog the Memory

How Exercise Can Jog the Memory | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
People who exercised regularly and on the day of testing did better on memory tests and were less anxious than their more sedentary peers. But a gene that controls production of a certain protein may determine who benefits from exercise.

For those of us who work online, it's always a good practice to take time away from the keyboard and screen for exercise.  I especially recommend a good walk when the tech frustrations start to bubble! ~ Dennis

5 Reflections for Teachers Heading Into Summer Break

5 Reflections for Teachers Heading Into Summer Break | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

I believe we all want to engage our students in the creation and re-creation of their thoughts, ideas, hopes and dreams, that are relevant to the world they will live in. Not the world we were told was in store for us. Beyond the curriculum, we are in fact teaching our students life skills that will hopefully empower them to make smart choices for the rest of their lives.

Brain Dip Magazine

Brain Dip Magazine | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

"We developed Brain Dip Magazine to add some zest to your middle-school curriculum. Maybe you just want to download it for FREE from the Apple App Store, maybe you are interested in making it part of your curriculum, or maybe you would just like to see the printed version. Either way, we are sure that you and your students will find yourself dipping into it. The AIS learning & research methodology is designed to help students connect education with real-life events. It enables students to ask questions about current events, conduct unbiased research, and share their findings with their classmates. Brain Dip Magazine can act as the core element of the AIS learning & research methodology, whether it is used in digital format for the iPad or as a printed version.

The goal is to create a student-driven learning environment in which educators act as learning coaches, guiding students to ask meaningful questions that offer substantial research possibilities as well as offering feedback on their research and its outcome."

Finding Rigor in Diverse Online Research Methods

Finding Rigor in Diverse Online Research Methods | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Matt and his colleagues wanted to know whether the online version of a course had the same effect on student achievement (as measured by passing rates, grades, and standardized test scores) as a fairly traditional intro stats class. To make this comparison, they used a research method called a randomized control trial, where participants (students in this case) volunteer to be randomly assigned to either the regular (control) class or the online (intervention class). Most people are familiar with the idea of randomized control trials from medical research, where patients are given an experimental drug and a placebo.
