Re-envisioning Modern Pedagogy: Educators as Curators

Presentation given at SXSWedu on March 6, 2012. <- very nice work on curation process for teachers (JS)

I just reviewed this slideshow.  I was pleased to see how I fit the model of Educator as curator.  In particular the author illustrates how Diigo (my main curation project for many years) helps fire the engines of a personal learning network.  When asked why I curate this Digital magazine, I can now refer folks to this excellent presentation. ~ Dennis O'Connor

5 Ways Twitter Strengthens A School’s Learning Community | Connected Principals

5 Ways Twitter Strengthens A School’s Learning Community | Connected Principals | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

By Joe Mazza

"This year, our K-6 staff began learning in a new virtual way using Twitter. After a couple staff in-service trainings and after school workshops, parents and teachers ventured into this new educational Twitterverse. As we enter the final week of school, I’d like to share it’s initial impact on teaching and learning from my principal’s lens.

"Our staff’s “learning by Twitter” has occurred in multiple formats this school year:

-From each other

-From classroom to classroom

-From our school parentsFrom their developing Personal Learning Networks (PLNs)

-From local & national conferencesFrom our district hashtag (#nped)

-From weekly education chats like #ptchat, #5thchat, #edchat #ntchat & others

"Below are five examples of collaborative and transparent learning compliments of @KnappElementary staff and parents. Without the efforts of teachers AND parents “trying” social media at school, something very new to most of us, none of these benefits would be possible."

The Guiding Principle for all Rapid E-Learners » The Rapid eLearning Blog

The Guiding Principle for all Rapid E-Learners » The Rapid eLearning Blog | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Typically elearning courses start from existing content. And often that content dictates how the course is structured and how it looks. And that may not always be best.

The guiding principle for rapid elearning design is to be intentional. Everything you do while developing your course should be planned and exist for a reason. You don’t want existing content to dictate the design of your course. This seems obvious but often isn’t the case.

"I have just returned from the Illinois Computing Educators Conference where I had the opportunity to facilitate a full day session titled Design Your Digital Classroom. This session wasn't about the ratio of students to machines, nor was it a prescription for using one type of technology.  The focus was on how to use technology as a tool for learning to support all learners in the 24/7 classroom." Motivating College Students with Social Media and Web 2.0

Motivating College Students with Social Media and Web 2.0 | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

By Michelle Pecansky-Brock

"Motivating my students is not part of what I’m evaluated on; rather, it’s part of what makes me love what I do. And the more time I spend in higher education, the more I begin to understand that there are some professors who are motivated entirely or primarily by extrinsic factors (compensation, contractual obligations, etc.) and others who thrive from intrinsic motivation (student feedback, experimenting with new teaching methods, working with student clubs or community involvement, etc.). I look for creative ways to motivate my students because in an online class, motivation is what keeps you logging in regularly, week after week, in isolation for 17 long weeks. That’s a tough journey! When I can sense that my students are engaged in what we are doing together, then I am a more fulfilled. I, in turn, am a more participatory instructor, and we, together, develop as a more effective community of learners. In a learning community, students are accountable for their learning and over time they begin to exude pride in their work."

How to Create Social Media Guidelines for Your School

How to Create Social Media Guidelines for Your School | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Social media is fast becoming as ubiquitous as the air we breathe. In recent months, many schools and districts around the country have taken steps to create social media policies and guidelines for their students and staff. In my work with several districts to draft these documents, I have seen many approaches that work well, and some that don't.

Online Education for Young Entrepreneurs: Worth Your Time?

Online Education for Young Entrepreneurs: Worth Your Time? | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
For busy entrepreneurs, an online degree may be a keen choice. But definitely weigh all of your options carefully.

Despite the growing number of options, is an online education a smart choice? For many entrepreneurs, it just might be. The reason is, you don’t have to give up your day job — or your business — to take classes, says Jeremy Johnson, co-founder of 2tor, a Landover, Md.,-based company that partners with higher-education institutions to deliver online degree programs. Otherwise, he says, “an entrepreneur has to consider the lost revenue of leaving his or her startup for two years.”
