Cathy Davidson: "“What’s clear is that it is time to move beyond the initial experimental stages and start thinking of mobile as a platform for organizational performance. … The time to get on top of mobile is now, as the market has matured to the point where we can see real benefits on a pragmatic basis.”

"...we shouldn't stick with "flipping" the classroom. We should use the technologies available to "make it do cartwheels....That requires not the passive receiving of content from a teacher (the flipping model doesn't change that) but students being actively engaged in the production, transmission, and broadcasting of knowledge--co-teaching, co-learning, co-researching."

Blended Learning is not so much an innovation as it is a natural by-product of the digital domain creeping into physical boundaries. As digital and social media become more and more prevalent in the life of learners, it was only a matter of time before learning became “blended” by necessity.

With children spending time online at younger and younger ages, it is vital that we explicitly teach young children how to protect themselves online. Most young children get the "Stranger Danger" talk at school, so they know about how to handle strangers in their neighborhood and in face-to-face situations.

Unfunded Aussie Startup Brainworth Seeks to Turn Higher Education into a Video Game

Unfunded Aussie Startup Brainworth Seeks to Turn Higher Education into a Video Game | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

The startup world is seriously displeased with the status quo in higher education. Brainworth, a scrappy startup out of Australia, is the latest to throw its hat in the ring, taking a novel approach.

"The subject which Brainworth’s founders know best, and where they plan to focus their initial lessons, is computer science with an emphasis on artificial intelligence. Students will arrive at the online university and stipulate a specific goal, such as “learn artificial intelligence.” From there they will be given a range of basic to more advanced tasks to complete and can choose a starting point commensurate with their abilities."

European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning

European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Abstract

In Sweden, higher education has moved away from distance education, including physical meetings, to online education with no physical meetings at all. This article focuses on the shift from distance to online education using an educational management perspective that is based on economic, staff, and student data collected between 1994 and 2010 (Department of Education, Umeå University). The results showed that in 2005, the number of distance education students increased significantly. In 2007, when all distance courses shifted to online courses, the number of students increased even further. The online courses attract many more students compared to traditional campus courses. Overall, the transition from distance to online courses has contributed to more students, an economy of scale that makes it possible to increase pedagogic development work. The online courses have also contributed to better working conditions for teachers. Without a deliberate educational management strategy, general educational courses might have been discontinued, a choice that would threaten the study of education as an academic discipline per se. As a result of these conditions, we believe ICT pedagogical development needs technical and pedagogical support as well as strategic leadership.

Some top colleges offer free online classes; what does that mean for UW? | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
While UW-Madison has no immediate plans to dive into the burgeoning MOOCs movement, the trend is certainly on leadership's mind as the university takes significant steps to rethink and redefine how it delivers education and remains relevant in the Internet era. The university is in the midst of what it's calling an "Educational Innovation" initiative pushed by interim Chancellor David Ward. The efforts are focused on improving learning, finding efficiencies and increasing revenues by expanding UW-Madison's reach to nontraditional and distance learning audiences.
