What do teachers and students really need from their learning management system?

What do teachers and students really need from their learning management system? | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

"The average school technologist, let alone the average teacher or administrator, has a lot to wade through in terms of selecting systems that support blended learning initiatives. Sure, most principals know that their school needs a platform where students and teachers can share information, assignments are readily accessible, and teachers can curate resources for students. But if the Blackboard-Moodlerooms-Sakai deal was suprising and confusing to those of us who follow this for a living, how can educators be expected to sort out a much larger market?"

Moodle Hosting | Key To School - KTS

Moodle Hosting | Key To School - KTS | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Moodle hosting, themes and support. We are a non-profit with an aim to make Moodle easy for all.

At Key To School (KTS), we believe that Moodle is indeed a gift to all educators. However, it was observed that setting up and maintaining a Moodle server was an uphill task for many educators, and experience becomes worse by the restrictions imposed by many non-managed hosting providers. On the other end of the spectrum, the managed Moodle hosting is too costly for a first time Moodler and individuals on low budget. We strive to bring better moodle hosting solutions for moodlers who want best-in-class moodle-managed hosting services at the most affordable price.

Is the Cell Phone the New Pencil? | Edutopia | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

By Jeff Grabill (@grabill on Twitter)

Summary by SmartBrief on EdTech

"A recent study of students' writing habits found that while writing is important to college students, they are increasingly doing so using digital platforms, such as texting, Facebook and e-mail. Jeff Grabill, a professor at Michigan State University, writes in a blog post that the findings signal a shift in student writing, but he adds it is unclear what the results mean for teachers."

The most important part of personal knowledge management (PKM), in my opinion, is the need for active sense-making. Merely seeking and sharing information does little other than create more noise online. Sense-making takes time, discipline, and effort.

A Real-Time Transcription App for Google Hangouts: Hangout Captions

A Real-Time Transcription App for Google Hangouts: Hangout Captions | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Hangout Captions is a new experimental app for Google Hangouts that allows you to add a real-time text transcription of what is being said inside the Hangout.

The text transcription is displayed next to the event allowing deaf or hearing-impaired participants to read and understand fully the topic being discussed.

"“By adding the +Hangout Captions app, you can either connect live text from a professional transcriptionist to your Hangout, or type right into a text box yourself to transcribe a Hangout for your friends,” Naomi Black, technical program manager for accessibility engineering wrote in a post on Google+."

"You’ll only be able to see a transcription in the Hangout Captions side panel when someone in the Hangout is providing the transcription; either through live stenography (CART or palantype) or by simply typing into the app. Live transcription isn’t automatic."

(Source: http://mashable.com/2012/07/05/google-hangout-caption/)

"Hangout Captions is an app that connects live transcription services directly into a Google+ Hangout, improving accessibility for participants who are deaf or hard of hearing."

P:S.: In late May, Google added the ability to add captions to videos uploaded to Google+.

What Is PBL Really?

What Is PBL Really? | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

"Do you want to engage your students in Project Based Learning (PBL)? Maybe you are asking yourself what is PBL really?  Am I doing it right?

Well, first of all, the most important thing to understand is that PBL is a construct made up by human beings and so there are lots of variations!  And you are entitled to construct your own version, too, within some parameters.

My suggestion is to study many of the great resources that are available to you and then create your own working definition and effective PBL practice.  (I’ve included some of my favourite resources below.)"

How to Use Google Search More Effectively [INFOGRAPHIC]

How to Use Google Search More Effectively [INFOGRAPHIC] | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
That search process also included determining when to rely on Google and when to utilize scholarly databases, but on a fundamental level, it appears that many people just don’t understand how to best find the information they seek using Google.
Thanks to the folks at HackCollege, a number of my “secrets” are out.

The infographic below offers a helpful primer for how to best structure searches using advanced operators to more quickly and accurately drill down to the information you want. This is by no means an exhaustive list of search operators and advanced techniques, but it’s a good start that will help set you on the path to becoming a Google master.
