Singularity University Converging Into Capitalist Machine

Singularity University Converging Into Capitalist Machine | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Singularity University was established in 2008 to “prepare humanity for accelerating technological change.” At the time, this seemed like a charitable mission, but today university overseers see room to make money too. The university’s leaders are drawing up plans to convert the non-profit university into a for-profit corporation under a new category of socially responsible business. Some believe it will happen by the end of the year.

Crowdsourcing in Your Classroom | Thoughtful Learning

Crowdsourcing in Your Classroom | Thoughtful Learning | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

By Smith

"How can you shift your classroom away from lecture and toward inquiry? You can get help from the modern phenomenon known as crowdsourcing—the practice of putting many minds to work on a single problem. Inquiry is, in effect, crowdsourcing in your classroom.

"The following four concepts from crowdsourcing can help you use more inquiry in your classroom."

Google Fiber to launch next week | KurzweilAI | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Google just sent out invitations to a “special event” in Kansas City on July 26 that is undoubtedly the launch of its much-anticipated fiber-to-the-home network, Gigaom reports.

Google said it wanted to build out the network so it could see what people might do with a full gigabit connection. Hopefully at the event we’ll also learn more on what Google plans to charge for access to the network as well as if it plans to share it with other ISPs.

It's a very Nice as well as instructive video. I have a problem though: it's not so much the how but the why I find difficult to solve: why would a crowd, say in my company, would want to even consider looking at my problem when they all have their own tasks to accomplish? There's an intermediate process there that needs to be implemented to 1st: break down my own tasks into multiple blocks 2nd: share them 3rd: insert them in the string of other blocks other fellow employees would havé added for their own tasks to be dealt with along mine.
Mind you I'm a long time enthusiast of everything new when it comes to management, I also call for down to earth solutions once I stop dreaming and get practical.

Daughter Tests TED-Ed, Falls in Love With Learning | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
I had planned to put a video together about “choosing a school for your children” to test out TED-Ed. However, my eight-year-old daughter caught wind of what I was doing and wanted to get in on the act. To cut a long story short my highly intellectual video-lesson turned into a (what she says is just as educational) video about sewing. No bad thing I’m sure.

This is a neat little trick that my son taught me. I'm sure some of you probably already know about this, but in case you didn't I think you will find it to be super handy, particularly if you are a Pinterest user! More than a few times, I've clicked on a Pinterest Pin, in order to find the instructions to an awesome Craft Tutorial, only to find that the Pin went somewhere other than the original source. If that happens to you, this is how you can find it.

Virtual Schools, Real Profits, Troubling Results

Virtual Schools, Real Profits, Troubling Results | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Anthony Cody spent 24 years working in Oakland schools, 18 of them as a science teacher at a high needs middle school. He is National Board certified, and now leads workshops with teachers focused on Project Based Learning.

Private enterprise may have some lessons to teach educators about efficiency, but so far we seem to see profits building up with few apparent benefits to our students. It is unclear why this is so attractive to our legislators - unless they are somehow being influenced by these large campaign contributions. I would hate to think that!

What do you think? Do you think virtual schools are delivering a high quality education to their students? Are campaign contributions swaying policymakers to make unwise decisions?

For-profit Ashford University loses accreditation bid | Inside Higher Ed

For-profit Ashford University loses accreditation bid | Inside Higher Ed | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges dealt a stinging blow to Bridgepoint Education Inc. on Monday by rejecting the for-profit’s accreditation bid for its Ashford University. The decision could mean regional accreditors will take a more assertive role in the debate over for-profit higher education.

Ashford fell short in several broad areas, according to the association, including its lack of a “sufficient core” of full-time faculty members, large numbers of students who drop out and questionable academic rigor in some areas.
