Harkin releases critical report on for-profits | Inside Higher Ed | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

A U.S. Senate committee released an unflattering report on the for-profit college sector on Sunday, concluding a two-year investigation led by Sen. Tom Harkin, an Iowa Democrat. While the report is ambitious in scope, and scathingly critical on many points, it appears unlikely to lead to a substantial legislative crackdown on the industry -- at least not during this election year.

Eight Big Ideas Behind the Constructionist Learning Lab

The first big idea is learning by doing. We all learn better when learning is part of doing something we find really interesting. We learn best of all when we use what we learn to make something we really want..............

Augmented Reality – Making Paper Interactive

Augmented Reality – Making Paper Interactive | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Clients who already use paper-based materials for distribution or in an instructor-led environment often ask us how we can enhance the learning experience for participants. One of the ways we recommend is to use elements of Augmented Reality.

The ART Of Collaboration (Collaborative Behaviours)

The ART Of Collaboration (Collaborative Behaviours) | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
If people are given the right tools and the right environment, will they spontaneously collaborate and share knowledge? Why do some people find it difficult to share and collaborate? Would incentives and rewards make a difference?

Collaboration in the workplace is now high on the priority list of many organisations seeking to leverage social technologies to free-up knowledge and provide opportunities for co-creation, co-production and innovation.

Gust MEES: I was one of the TOP10 Knol authors (Google Knol discontinued its service as on May 1, 2012) and I was involved in a lot of collaborative articles with multicultural authors and it was a very positive experience... I hope one day having the same opportunity back again on WordPress now...

One of our "old knols" (created on  November 02, 2010 [we were pioneers]) is being migrated to WordPress here if you would like to check it:

English Raven: Moodle Tutorial: Using book module pages instead of topic/week blocks

English Raven: Moodle Tutorial: Using book module pages instead of topic/week blocks | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
When you're building your Moodle course, you may find that using the standard topic/week blocks on the main page is not the most ideal way to present and apply your content and learning activities. The topic blocks can be handy, but they can comprise a "scroll of death" (note one way to avoid this here) and tend to present like a database and 'list' things like downloads and quizzes and assignments without many real options to contextualise them or present them in a 'fuller' learning sequence.

The Teacher’s Visual Guide To Social Media

The Teacher’s Visual Guide To Social Media | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Posted by Terry Heick via onlinecolleges.net

"What can social media do for you in your classroom? A lot, actually.

The use of social media in formal learning environments is an exciting possibility for a variety of reasons, including authenticity of learning materials, widespread availability, low cost (assuming technology to access it is in place), and other potential, including higher-level thinking possibilities, many of which we outlined in our twitter spectrum.

Reducing email | Harold Jarche

Reducing email | Harold Jarche | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

I noted last year that workers waste a lot of time doing useless activities, like managing unwanted communications, and suggested that the cause of the problem, digital overload, was also the potential solution: social media. The ROI for social media in business is quite obvious: reducing wasted time. That’s how we can also find the time for networked learning.

Screenshots and elearning go hand-in-hand. I use them for a lot of my software training. I also use them almost daily for project reviews. It’s easy to create a quick screen grab and then add a few notes. I also use screenshots when I run across a template or idea that I may want to use in a future elearning course. Just grab an image and save it in my ideas folder for later.

Interactive infographic about the evolution of browsers and the web.

Google launches this year's version of the Evolution of the Web with Hyperakt and Vizzuality.

http://vizzuality.com/projects/evolutionofweb20

Last year, Vizzuality, Hyperakt, and members of the Google Chrome team worked on a visualization of web technologies and browsers. Since it was warmly received by the community, we decided to make a new version, using some of the latest web technologies to provide a fresh and distinctive experience.

In addition to updating the visualization with new browser versions and web technologies, we built a secondary visualization to show the growth of internet users and internet traffic worldwide.

One of the pluses of technology in education is the fact that it liberated the notion of formal instruction and destroyed its confining walls. There is an emerging breed of teachers nowadays who no longer accept the notion that the classroom is necessarily contained within four walls. They use social media and telecommunication technologies to globalize their instruction and extend their teaching to everywhere in the world.
