John Seely Brown on Motivating Learners (Big Thinkers Series)

Published on Mar 6, 2013

Innovative thinker John Seely Brown, known for his ideas for merging digital culture and education, shares lessons educators can learn from surfers, gamers, and artists on how passion and competitive hunger can drive intrinsic motivation.

Tracy18's curator insight, March 19, 2013 6:46 AM

Such an inspiration and a very insightful man. We have been stuck in a 'Teacher says so' learning environment for generations and a shift is occuring whereby students are embracing change and using technolgy in a constructivist manner to further their own education, students are embracing change much more readily than teachers who still seem reluctant.

Sample Student's comment, March 25, 2013 10:42 PM
I first discovered John Seely Brown when completing my M.Ed - http://people.ucsc.edu/~gwells/Files/Courses_Folder/ED%20261%20Papers/Situated%20Cognition.pdf. This view on learning rang, and still rings truth as one of the core theories that underpin my beliefs. It is timeless. In an age where learners' contexts are often more deterministic than the classroom, the interdependence of activity, culture and concept is, as you point out so well, a fundamental principle of social constructivism. In the age of technology, as information becomes so available to all, our learning cultures have shifted to one in which the learner is empowered to lead their own learning. And so this model, presented before the age of social technology, still predicts, anticipates, and explains learning.

VIPKid recruits teachers through referrals and social media and gets 10,000 to 20,000 applications a month. Prospective hires are tested and screened and about one out of every 10 applicants are approved, Mi says. Successful ones take VIPKid's training courses for about a week and need to pass a final test before starting work. They're not required to have degrees in education, but do need a bachelor's degree and some teaching experience.

Using e-Assessment to enhance student learning and evidence learning outcomes | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
This special edition captures some of the recent investigations in e-assessment that move us beyond the traditional selected response formats of multiple-choice tests, short answer, fill-in-the-blanks, true-false, and matching. Higher-level cognitive and affective skills cannot readily be assessed using traditional selected response formats and more authentic e-assessments are being proposed (Kuh, Jankowski, Ikenberry, & Kinzie 2014).

5 IDEAS for a pedagogy of online learning | Tony Bates

5 IDEAS for a pedagogy of online learning | Tony Bates | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Tony Bates:

"This report provides some intriguing suggestions for designers of blended and online learning. As the report states:

The examples of initiatives discussed ….. may be used as inspiration for course teams, departments or institutions to explore innovative practices.

It is clear that universities are going to change, not just because technology is at last beginning to radically shake up how we design courses, but also because the needs of learners are changing. In the end, the value of any new online pedagogy will be judged by how well it helps meets these needs. This report provides many useful ideas and examples that should help stimulate such developments."

How Students Can Use Timeline Infographics in the Classroom

How Students Can Use Timeline Infographics in the Classroom | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

As a foreign language teacher, I am always looking for innovative ways to allow my students to demonstrate what they have learned.

I want students to be able to choose a tool that brings out their creative side and, as a result, leads to a more authentic and meaningful learning experience.

Because learning a language can be difficult, I try to design a variety of activities and projects that will provide students with practice and unique opportunities to develop their language skills through the creation of their projects.

Clever use of infographics -- another way for your students to show what they know.

Official Website of Root | The robot that brings code to life | FixTheGap | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Root is on a mission to get more kids (and adults) coding. Root is a fun, easy-to-use robot which teaches coding to anyone ages 4 to 99. Root has over 50 sensors and actuators with which it can draw, erase, play music, explore its world, and even defy gravity by using magnetism to drive on wall mounted whiteboards — making coding activities applicable to a range of topics, social, and way more cool. Root grows coding experience with people in a familiar and consistent platform — offering years of learning opportunities rather than days. As coding skills improve, kids advance from programming with a blocks-based graphical interface (a child can use it even before they know how to read) to programming with fully text-based languages like Swift, JavaScript, and Python.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I read Seymour Papert's Mindstorms when I was a young teacher.  I taught Turtle geometry and Logo programming to 10 year olds and built Lego robots with 8th graders back in the 80's. It changed my life. Learning to code with a robot has been a long time coming.  Root looks like the real deal to me

Blended Learning with the New Google Sites | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Previously, Google Sites was not intuitive. It rendered ugly sites that did not display well on phones and tablets. The new Google Sites is no more complicated than pointing and clicking - no HTML knowledge needed (see tips below). It integrates perfectly with GSuite. This makes it easy to showcase GSuite files.

If you are an early adopter looking for something to play with over Christmas vacation, the new build of Google Sites may be an early present for the holidays.  Like all things Google it's rolling out while rolling on down the tracks.  At the moment, there's no simple conversion of old sites to new sites, but that's promised for 2017.  Worth a look if you're riding the G-Train.
