Research: How Video Production Affects Student Engagement

edX recently commissioned a study of nearly 1,000 videos, segmenting them out by by video type and production style, and discovered this among their other findings:

  1. Shorter videos are more engaging. Engagement drops after 6 minutes.
  2. Videos with a more personal feeling are more effective than high-fidelity studio recordings.
  3. Videos in which the instructor speaks quickly and with high enthusiasm are more engaging.
  4. Khan-style tablet drawings are more engaging than power point slides.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I love it when research supports the conclusions I've drawn from long experience.

Hacking the Robot: I Sent You My Resume; Why Haven’t You Called?

Hacking the Robot: I Sent You My Resume; Why Haven’t You Called? | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
In summary, you need to first make “friends” with the robot reading your resume to boost your chances of your resume being read – and ultimately contacted – by a human being, the HR decision maker. Maybe now you know why you haven’t been called.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This quick read explains how to buddy up to the ATS software reading your online resumes.

Martin Buckland, author of the post asserts: "Applicant Tracking Software eliminates approximately 75% of candidates"

I'd love to hear from some resume experts and HR folks about this statistic.

If it's even marginally accurate, it's time to hack the robot and redraft the old resume!

Curation: Creatively Filtering Content

Curation: Creatively Filtering Content | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Curation is a life skill and an important part of being digitally literate.  Educators need to know how to curate information so they can teach students how they can curate content for research, their interests and passion. As part of this process educators need to encourage students to curate information using techniques that address their own personal learning needs.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

We introduce content curation using both Diigo and Scoop.it in our E-Learning for Educators class. It's our firm belief that online teachers must be information fluent and that they teach those skills to their online students.

We also see these skills as a strong foundation for building personal learning networks.

loving your figure! obvious for curators, not so much for students and teachers
Aparna Nagaraj's curator insight, August 29, 7:30 AM

You come across a lot of stuff, find some of them valuable, find value in some parts, and you see connections between the different stuff you come across. You curate by filtering, extracting, and bringing out the connection between the stuff you find, and this curated new stuff becomes more valuable than those already shared stuff that you found. Valuable enough to be shared to others who are looking for similar stuff as you are.

Lynda.com Online Training part of the package for UW-Stout Online Students

Lynda.com Online Training part of the package for UW-Stout Online Students | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Lynda.com is a constantly growing library of more than 2,000 self-paced online courses. This diverse catalog includes software training, programming lessons and even “concept” tutorials on topics such as design and photography.

Since Lynda.com is now integrated with your UW-Stout account, it can recognize you, maintain a learning transcript and make certificates available for your professional purposes.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Online students (and teachers) go to school 'in a computer'. Gaining technology skills is part of the double loop effect of online classes. You learn the curriculum and you begin to master the communications technology that allows you to be present with your students.

We don't expect the graduate students in the E-Learning and Online Teaching Graduate Certificate to be technical wizards. We do encourage independent learning and the confident attitude that "I can learn this."

One service we provide to students is 24/7 access to the superb video based online self-paced courses provided by Lynda.com.  This is available to all UW-Stout students currently registered for a class.

Our online classes begin mid September. Now is a good time to brush up on your software skills!

By HOWARD RHEINGOLD August 21, 2014 - 8:12am

"I’ve been writing about digital media for nearly 30 years, and over that time, I’ve been asked over and over again by readers, critics, scholars and myself: “Do these personal computers, digital networks, webs of unfiltered information, mobile attention magnets do us more good than harm — as individuals, families, communities, and societies?” I have come to believe that the answer is: “It depends on how many people know how to use these technologies to their own benefit and that of the commons.”

Excellent resource for EVERYONE online!! In today's age of information, it is no longer an issue of recalling information. "Just Google it" is much more than simply a catchy phrase. Nearly every bit of information can be obtained in seconds, somewhere online. The issue has become finding the proverbial "needle in the haystack".

It has become mush more important to understand how to filter the good from the bad and the ugly.

Managing Your Digital Classroom with Wearable Technology (EdSurge News)

Managing Your Digital Classroom with Wearable Technology (EdSurge News) | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

On a typical day, there are three stations in my classroom: a teacher station where I conduct small group instruction, a collaborative station where students work cooperatively to complete a task, and a work station where students work independently to complete asynchronous tasks. With three distinct groups working simultaneously, one might wonder how a can teacher respond to each and every student misunderstanding.

My answer: the Pebble.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

The Pebble has a sort of retro-nerd look that you'll either love or hate.  This clever blog will help any teacher on the move in a 1 to 1 classroom. Now what else can we use it for?

University research: if you believe in openness, stand up for it

University research: if you believe in openness, stand up for it | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Publishing openly provides greater exposure, boosts prospects and can lead to more citations, says Erin McKiernan

We spend years teaching our children to share. Yet from the moment students enter academia, we discourage it. Lock up your work in prestigious subscription journals; keep your data close to your chest; compete instead of collaborate – these are the messages transmitted by peers and mentors. These are the tenets of our unhealthy academic culture. We need to change our priorities.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Open Education = Open Research?  Research behind the paywall vs research delivered by keyword search on Google or Bing?

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, August 24, 7:50 PM

Sharing our research is important, but forgoing vigor in publishing could be problematic. For example, what makes an open source published article strong? There is a a need to explore something different that allows publication, openness, and vigor.
