7 lessons about finding the work you were meant to do

7 lessons about finding the work you were meant to do | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
You don’t “find your calling,” you fight for it — and other lessons from people who found their passion (sometimes late in life).
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I found my calling as a teacher when I as still in high school. It kept coming back. I once had a license plate holder that said "Born to Teach".  After 25 years in public school classrooms I was worn out by the all the demands that were draining my teaching spirit.

Then I found my way to teaching online. Returning to school at age 50 was the key.  I fought for a better way to teach... and found it online. ~ Dennis

Students mostly couldn’t tell ‘Jill Watson’ wasn’t human; ‘Yep!’

Since January, “Jill,” as she was known to the artificial-intelligence class, had been helping graduate students design programs that allow computers to solve certain problems, like choosing an image to complete a logical sequence.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Fascinating.  The line between an automated response or canned comment just got crossed.

So much of good online teaching and learning is based on developing a safe learning community. Would you take it as a violation of trust to learn your TA was a bot?

WGU Student Mentors serve a critical advising and support role for student success. Student mentors do not teach courses, rather, they are their students' primary source of information about academic program operation, and about the policies and procedures of the university. Student mentors counsel their assigned students in understanding expectations and overcoming obstacles to ensure success. The student mentor is responsible for providing highly engaged, student centered support to a caseload of undergraduate or graduate students. Student mentoring requires significant contact via phone but also includes email, web camera interaction, and the potential for instant messaging and alternate forms of connection.

Learning Online is not a Spectator Sport: How to Make it Active | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Yet active learning in the virtual environment is no different than learning in face-to-face classrooms; we can apply the same definitions to online learning communities. The goal is to encourage students to dialog, write, think and evaluate no matter what learning environment the student occupies. If we consider Bloom’s Taxonomy of cognitive development, we want students to employ skills that go beyond the entry-level skills of knowledge and comprehension.

Dr. Julie Zaloudek: UW-Stout Critical Theory Learning Glass Lecture 5

Dr. Julie Zaloudek Spring, 2016

In a mostly dark studio in Millennium Hall, Julie Zaloudek stood in front of an illuminated pane of glass about the size of a large television.

From a control room came the voice of Ed Jakober, of Learning Technology Services at University of Wisconsin-Stout. “Quiet in the studio. OK. Smile,” he said as he turned on a video camera.

Zaloudek began to lecture for her Dynamics of the Family class for online students majoring in human development and family studies.

Facing a camera that was positioned on the other side of the glass, she wrote on the glass with a brightly colored marker.

Typically, with the camera opposite her, what Zaloudek was writing would appear backward. When the video was finished, however, students would be able to read her writing.

Learning Glass is a see-through blackboard with a twist.

Lisa Fitzgerald:  Reflections on E-Learning for Educators at UW-Stout | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
The following are my thoughts as I traveled through the eight weeks in my first class toward the certificate. I learned so much during this time, and I am reminded of how much there is always waiting...
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Lisa Fitzgerald recently earned her E-Learning and Online Teaching Graduate Certificate at UW-Stout.

Lisa's reflections show how a dedicated educator climbs a steep learning curve.  This is a page from her e-Portfolio, written during E-Learning for Educators, the first course in the certificate program.

Lisa was a very skilled college instructor new to online teaching when she joined us.  By the end of the program, Lisa was teaching online for her school.

Observing her online teaching technique and exploring her course design, I quickly realized she is a 'natural'.

As you will see she is also a very reflective practitioner.

Academic Digital Etiquette: Interacting in online spaces | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Celia's reflections:

"I have had many discussions with students about the protocols on interacting in online spaces in an academic or professional manner. Whether they be commenting on a blog or giving feedback in comments on a Google document or interacting in Edmodo or Google Classroom, students need to be modelled the ‘professional’ way to behave. Commenting within an academic context is in fact providing feedback and as such quite a complicated skill for a young student."

Learning Glass helps UW-Stout professors connect with online students

Learning Glass helps UW-Stout professors connect with online students | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Learning Glass is a see-through blackboard with a twist.

Assistant Professor Julie Zaloudek: “With Learning Glass, you can see the instructors’ passion for the content we’re teaching. The student has the perception that we’re looking at them, and we like that.”

The idea for Learning Glass came from Jamison Patrick, of the Stout Online instructional design team. He saw a video about Learning Glass by a San Diego State professor who created one.

Patrick and Mike Cropp at the UW-Stout Discovery Center Fab Lab designed and built their own Learning Glass last fall using quarter-inch thick tempered glass mounted on a stand. Learning Technology Services created the set for videotaping.

“This provides an opportunity to be more engaging to our students,” Patrick said. “It’s low-cost and the return on investment is high. The possibilities are endless with e-learning.”

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

The creative engergy of well trained minds is just part of what makes online teaching and learning a vital field. Kudos to the Fab-Lab and the committed educators of Stout Online.

21st Century School still requires teaching and content. The key is that teaching is inviting students into learning and the content also is inviting. Inviting and hosting learning is hard work which calls on teaching as relational and invokes curricula as a complex conversations. When we set up either/or binaries like this chart, we perpetuate a modernist view of School and not education.
