Servant-leadership: the Online Way! E-learning where community building is key

Servant-leadership: the Online Way! E-learning where community building is key | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Sylvia van de Bunt-Kokhuis, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Nabil Sultan, Liverpool Hope University, United Kingdom

Abstract

The digitalisation of educational communities has increased rapidly in the last decade. Modern technologies transform the way educational leaders such as teachers, tutors, deans and supervisors view and manage their educational communities. More often, educational leaders offer a variety of gateways, guiding the e-learners in their search for finding and understanding information. A new type of leader is required for understanding the needs and requirements of geographically dispersed e-learners. This calls for a compassioned kind of leader, able to reconcile the dilemma of high-tech versus hi-touch in the online classroom. This article examines servant-leadership and its implications for e-learning in the 24/7 classroom where community building is key.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

The role of the teacher in online education is often described as the guide on the side, rather than the sage on the stage. Servant leadership concepts bring nuance and depth to the role of guide or facilitator.

In this article the authors stake out promising new ground for research. "In literature (amongst others Greenleaf, 1977 and 1991; Keith, 2011; Nuijten, 2009; Trompenaars and Voerman, 2009; Sarayrah, 2004; Vargas and Hanlon, 2007 and Spears, 2000) servant-leadership qualities can be found like listening, forgiveness, empathy, humility, care for people and the organization, healing of relationships, awareness, persuasion, courage, giving feedback, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, authenticity, commitment to the growth and empowerment of others and building community. Teachers with some or more of these servant-leadership (high-touch) qualities can make the difference in the e-learning environment. In the (high-tech) online classroom the teacher, more than ever before, needs to be qualified to amongst others listen, care for the e-learners, encourage awareness raising, give feedback and, last but not least, build a vivid learning community. This calls for a compassioned kind of educational leader, able to connect high-tech (technology mediated learning, multimedia infrastructure) opportunities with hi-touch (contact, human interaction, commitment to the growth of others, etc.) opportunities in the online classroom."

The e-learning environments envisioned in this internationally oriented paper describe many of the values driving the University of Wisconsin-Stout's E-Learning and Online Teaching Graduate Certificate.

Professional Learning Communities - What is a PLC?

Professional Learning Communities - What is a PLC? | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

From the Center for Comprehensive School Reform and Improvement:

"Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) shift the focus of school reform from restructuring to reculturing (Louis, 2006). A PLC is an ongoing process used to establish a schoolwide culture that develops teacher leadership explicitly focused on building and sustaining school improvement efforts. Generally, PLCs are composed of teachers, although administrators and support staff routinely participate (Bolam, McMahon, Stoll, Thomas, & Wallace, 2005; Huffman, 2000). In some schools, PLCs are extended to community members and students, as appropriate (Stoll, Bolam, McMahon, Wallace, & Thomas, 2006; Stoll & Louis, 2007). Through participation in PLCs, teachers enhance their leadership capacity while they work as members of ongoing, high-performing, collaborative teams that focus on improving student learning (Rentfro, 2007). This great article shows how we can use Tumblr in our classrooms. I love the suggestion of a quick and easy website or hosting an online debate. They also point out that we need to protect kids online, but they need experience to learn how to do this - Tumblr could be a good way to do this :0)

Do you use Tumblr?

I have an account but don't check it much...maybe I should be?

Any tips or advice for me?

The academic journey of university students on Facebook: an analysis of informal academic-related activity over a semester

Abstract

This paper reports on an observation of 70 university students’ use of their personal social network site (SNS), Facebook, over a 22-week university study period. The study sought to determine the extent that university students use their personal SNSs to support learning by exploring frequencies of academic-related content and topics being discussed. The findings reported in the paper reveal that students used their personal SNSs to discuss academic-related topics, particularly to share experiences about doing work or procrastinating, course content and grades. Mapping academic-related activity frequencies over the 22 weeks illustrated that around certain points in the academic calendar, particularly times when students’ assignments or exams were nearing, academic activity increased, suggesting that SNSs may play an important role in a students’ academic experience.

The findings suggest that many students today may be leaving traces of their academic journey online and that academics should be aware that these interactions may also exist in their own students’ online social spaces. This study offers opportunities for future research, particularly research which seeks to determine differences between individuals’ academic activity, the extent that intensive SNSs use supports or distracts students from learning, as well as the extent to which universities should or can harness SNSs to improve the student experience.

Design Thinking « Design Thinking for Educators

Design Thinking « Design Thinking for Educators | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Design Thinking is the confidence that everyone can be part of creating a more desirable future, and a process to take action when faced with a difficult challenge. That kind of optimism is well needed in education.

Classrooms and schools across the world are facing design challenges every single day, from teacher feedback systems to daily schedules. Wherever they fall on the spectrum of scale—the challenges educators are confronted with are real, complex, and varied. And as such, they require new perspectives, new tools, and new approaches. Design Thinking is one of them.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Look here for examples and explanations about design thinking.

Moodle Rubric Grading - Complete Guide - Super Moodle

Moodle Rubric Grading - Complete Guide - Super Moodle | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

The Moodle rubric, a system built for criteria-based assessment, explicitly describes the performance expectation for an assignment. The rubrics have several criteria and each criterion has several descriptive levels provided. A rubric identifies several attributes. They include descriptions, performance levels and the criteria.

Criteria take into account the performance aspects that an instructor intends to assess. The description attribute denotes the desired characteristics associated with a criterion. The performance level is a rating scale in rubric used to identify the level of mastery a student has within a given criteria. Each descriptive level has a numerical grade and an instructor can choose the level that answers a given criterion in the best way possible.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Moodle is always evolving.  One of the strengths of this open source giant is the depth of user community resources.  The Rubric system helps you build grading criteria that will help your online students hit the target.

5 Accessible Design Tips for Blended Courses -- Campus Technology

5 Accessible Design Tips for Blended Courses -- Campus Technology | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Revamping a course to be accessible to students with physical or learning disabilities can help make it more accessible to everybody else too.

Blended learning typically involves an element of student control over when, where and how learning takes place. But what happens if a student isn't very good with "self-direction, self-pacing and self-motivation"?

As Ibrahim Dahlstrom-Hakki, a senior academic researcher and associate professor at Landmark College in Vermont, expressed it, those are "critical areas of weakness" for students with learning disabilities — and they can be problems for mainstream students as well.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Solid advice for designer and teachers. Accessible Design (Universal Design?) is good for all learners, but essential for those with learning disabilities.
