Practical Tips to Aid New Faculty Members | Online Teaching Guest Blog | Blog

Practical Tips to Aid New Faculty Members | Online Teaching Guest Blog | Blog | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
When training and developing new faculty, words like best practices, pedagogy/andragogy, student engagement, and retention are bandied about quite a bit. While these things are important and certainly need to be addressed, I find new faculty also need to know more practical aspects of what it means to teach for any given college or university. No matter the subject matter taught, navigating various collegiate landscapes can become difficult and confusing, especially when adjuncting at a variety of institutions. So, what do new faculty need to know during this time of adjustment?
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This article will help program directors build a safety net cradle the concerns of the online teaching staff. Great tips for managers!

Students Say They Are Not as Tech Savvy as Educators Assume - EdSurge News

Students Say They Are Not as Tech Savvy as Educators Assume - EdSurge News | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
In an interview with EdSurge, Alexandra Pickett, the Director of New York State University’s Center for Online Teaching Excellence, noted that many of her students know how to use online platforms such as Twitter and Facebook for fun, but have no idea how to leverage them for academic and professional use.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

All online teachers know this. We coach the technology right along with the curriculum.

Yup, we have know this for years! This is why school librarians are important.
MFaculty's curator insight, June 24, 12:28 PM
This is the 'open secret' many dismiss out of hand. Rather than assuming all my students know how to use Google Drive, OneNote, Box.com and other online applications, I take the time to walk them through it when we need it in class. Some students can be hyper sensitive to negative feedback, and others don't want to be the one that slows the momentum of the class with questions everyone else seems to know the answers to.

Rather than expose any student to peer scrutiny, I make it a point to remind the class that not everyone has the same level of knowledge as I do, so I need to ensure we all start out on the same page. This interview corroborates my gut assessments.

Monday, July 10 | 1:00pm - 2:00pm ET | Online

Proof of skill attainment through alternative credentialing has gone mainstream. Microcredentialing and digital badging have become credible ways to codify achievements of many kinds: nanodegrees, traditional learning programs, micromasters, etc. This session will define and describe the emergence of badging, microcredentialing, and nanodegrees, along with the role that technology plays in enabling these models and the impact they are having on higher education.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This is the first of two webinars offered by Educause. Explore and discuss alternate credentialing concepts. Can universities adapt to the fast track offers from competitors like Coursera and EDx?

Lack of faculty time and training limits digital learning more than resistance does, study finds | Inside Higher Ed

Lack of faculty time and training limits digital learning more than resistance does, study finds | Inside Higher Ed | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
A new survey of faculty members and administrators by Tyton Partners asserts that the use of digital instructional technologies, which it endorses, is facing "headwinds" in adoption by colleges and universities. The study identifies faculty take-up of digital courseware and other tools as among the leading impediments to their spread -- but cites faculty members' lack of time and the training they receive from their institutions as far bigger cause than their outright opposition.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

UW-Stout Online Professional Development offers a highly effective and affordable resource for directly addressing the issues raised in this article.

Maryellen Weimer, PhD: Classroom Discussions: How to Apply the Right Amount of Structure | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
How does one prepare for these unstructured structured discussions? Maybe it starts with having a general sense of discussion possibilities, identifying some of the priorities, but being open to unexpected outcomes. What actions does this general orientation entail? Most of us launch discussions with questions, but we also head into the discussion having good answers to those questions.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Dr. Weimer always provides insight wrapped around practical suggestions. This piece on the structure of discussions (both online and face to face) is spot on.
