Critical thinkiing is an essential 21st Century Skill.  E-Learning courses (expecially those with facilitated discussion) are great opportunities for practicing critical thinkiing.   Without Critical Thinking, a course can become so boring!

I like this poster. Learning psychology is about explaining or outlining a theory, followed by evidence in the form of research, ending with critical evaluative commentary. This will be helpful for students.

A useful infographic that not only summarises the attributes of a critical thinker but more significantly, provides a 25 point list of actions teachers can invite students to do in learning activities, to stimulate and develop critical thinking abilities. A great poster for your office wall!

Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
I am interested in this post and post on critical thinking. Is critical thinking a skill?  Can one teach critical thinking? Stephen has delivered the course on Critical Literacies MOOC in the past....

Robert H. Ennis, Author of The Cornell Critical Thinking Tests
“Critical thinking is reasonable, reflective thinking that is focused on deciding what to believe and do.”

Assuming that critical thinking is reasonable reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do, a critical thinker:

1. Is open-minded and mindful of alternatives
2. Tries to be well-informed
3. Judges well the credibility of sources
4. Identifies conclusions, reasons, and assumptions
5. Judges well the quality of an argument, including the acceptability of its reasons, assumptions, and evidence
6. Can well develop and defend a reasonable position
7. Asks appropriate clarifying questions
8. Formulates plausible hypotheses; plans experiments well
9. Defines terms in a way appropriate for the context
10. Draws conclusions when warranted, but with caution
11. Integrates all items in this list when deciding what to believe or do

What are the principles of critical thinking?

- Knowledge is acquired only through thinking, reasoning, and questioning. Knowledge is based on facts.

- It is only from learning how to think that you learn what to think.

- Critical thinking is an organized and systematic process used to judge the effectiveness of an argument.

- Critical thinking is a search for meaning.

- Critical thinking is a skill that can be learned.

- Do the above principles hold true and won’t change from one domain to the next?

Read more, very interesting:

Are we sure that Critical Thinking is really appreciated as it should? In my personal experience critical thinker are often opposed if not hunted. Deciding to be a critical thinker may have a high price especially in certain context like industry or management. Definitely it brings better results and can easily foster innovation, but it is hated by man of power and yes-men. I pride myself of constantly trying to be a critical thinker and most of all to be critical of myself and my actions, but I have to say that this has taken me quite a toll in my life, yet I do not regret it. Sorry for stepping in, I do hope this two-penny thought could help in sparkle some discussion on how to foster critical thinking.

Teaching Copyright- A MUST READ!

Teaching Copyright- A MUST READ! | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

This curriculum is designed to give teachers a comprehensive set of tools to educate students about copyright while incorporating activities that exercise a variety of learning skills. Lesson topics include: the history of copyright law; the relationship between copyright and innovation; fair use and its relationship to remix culture; peer-to-peer file sharing; and the interests of the stakeholders that ultimately affect how copyright is interpreted by copyright owners, consumers, courts, lawmakers, and technology innovators.

The lesson plan concludes with a mock trial that tests the students' understanding of copyright and its limitations and encourages them to consider the positions of each party involved.

The State of Critical Thinking Today

The State of Critical Thinking Today | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Faculty Lack a Substantive Concept of Critical Thinking

Studies demonstrate that most college faculty lack a substantive concept of critical thinking. Consequently they do not (and cannot) use it as a central organizer in the design of instruction. It does not inform their conception of the student’s role as learner. It does not affect how they conceptualize their own role as instructors. They do not link it to the essential thinking that defines the content they teach.

=============================================

Gust MEES

I make a break in here to show the "about" of that web site with the following site text here:

Critical thinking is essential if we are to get to the root of our problems and develop reasonable solutions.

===> After all, the quality of everything we do is determined by the quality of our thinking. <===

Whereas society commonly promotes values laden with superficial, immediate "benefits," critical thinking cultivates substance and true intellectual discipline. It entails rigorous self-reflection and openmindedness — the keys to significant changes. Critical thinking requires the cultivation of core intellectual virtues such as intellectual humility, perseverance, integrity, and responsibility. Nothing of real value comes easily.

===> A rich intellectual environment — alive with curious and determined students — is possible only with critical thinking at the foundation of the educational process. <===

How Do We Teach Critical Thinking in a Connected World? | Powerful Learning Practice

How Do We Teach Critical Thinking in a Connected World? | Powerful Learning Practice | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

"As a child, I grew up in a world that was dominated by left-brained thinking. Both my parents were in professions that required in-depth analytical thinking. The “rule” in my house was: “If you break something, try to fix it. Only THEN come ask Dad for help.”
Looking back now, I realize something I never understood then — what he had instilled was an ability to think critically. Along with creativity, collaboration, and communication, critical thinking is one of the four components of learning in the 21st century. Unlike the other three, critical thinking is often difficult to reduce to bite-size pieces of understanding and challenging to teach to others."

Read on for an example of teaching critical thinking with a first grade class as well as a look at 3 underlying components to critical thinking.

That is, virtually every educator will agree that we should be asking our students to think more, and to communicate their thoughts more, but they think this can only really be done via essay-type assignments, assignments which are both time and resource consuming. Thus we instead turn to the sorts of assignments that one can use a Scantron to mark, assignments that almost invariably focus on content rather than cognition.
