*Self-learners: largely self-directed learners who take it upon themselves to find useful ways to learn. This project seeks to empower the worldwide population of self-motivated learners who use digital media to connect with each other, to co-construct knowledge, to co-learn. Co-learning is ancient; the capacity for learning by imitation and more, to teach others what we know, is the essence of human culture. We are human because we learn together. Today, however, the advent of digital production media and distribution/communication networks has raised the power of co-learning to a new level. Delete the scoop?

What if every student (and educator) was a good online researcher? I know, you don't have the time to teach information fluency skills. What if you could get a significant advance is skills with just a 2 -3 hour time commitment?

This is a mother lode of free courses offered online by many of the top universities in the country. Mostly video archives of lectures which isn't the most effective or interesting way to learn. Still, great teachers with teaching stories, from top universities shouldn't be missed. After all, folks around the world have this access. Hungry minds will find a way to learn. ~ Dennis Via BobZwick1 Delete the scoop?

As a university online teacher I think of the facilitated online learning community as the gold standard of e-learning. At the same time the convenience and ability to scale provided by on-demand training can't be denied. On the corporate side of the e-learning pie, on-demand learning has long been an acceptible approach. On the academic side, on-demand doesn't sit right with many online instructors. One tool doesn't fit all. But on-demaind will fit some situations. ~ Dennis --------- The On-Demand World

The concept of self-directed learning has long fascinated researchers in the field of education for quite some time. Becoming a self-directed learner is found to be most important as we develop into adults. It is often cited as being one of the most important functions of education. However, research has shown that there needs to be a readiness for self-directed learning that comes with maturity. Prior research suggests that in order to be successful in an online learning environment, one must have a technical readiness and a self-directed readiness (Guglielmino & Guglielmino, as cited in Piskurich, 2003). However, with the rapid growth of virtual schooling and states now requiring virtual credits to graduate high school, it is more important that students are successful in an online learning environment. While adults vary in their readiness for self-directed learning that seems to be needed for success in the environment in which we live, adolescents are less ready for this type of learning. As previously mentioned, self-directed learning is one of the primary functions of education. Providing 21st century skills is also a primary goal of education. There is a definite connection between preparing learners to become more self-directed as they mature and providing learners with 21st century skills. One way both can be achieved is through e-learning. In addition, the relationship between e-learning and self-directed learning is cyclical. In order to be a successful e-learner, one must also have some self-directed learning abilities. Can self-directed learning be fostered in adolescents and achieved through e-learning programs? In exchange, will learning to work in a virtual environment help adolescents become more self-directed as adults? Delete the scoop?
