Dennis T OConnor's insight:

The samples I've seen by those who really know how to use this tool are stunning.  I'm inspired to try it.  I've found the best way to learn new systsm is to start with a passion project. There are a lot of ideas I'm passionate about. The motivation to work long enought to create something to be proud of comes from finding the right topic and finding a little time to explore something new.

“While the industry congratulates itself on how they make use of the latest technology, the lack of impact is leading a drive to irrelevancy. Learners tolerate the courses, at best. Operations groups and others are beginning to focus on the performance solutions available. Executives are beginning to hear a message that the old approach is a waste of resources.”

What is the Visual Voice?

You may not be a trained graphic designer, but odds are that you can tell when things look right or not. That’s because there’s a voice in the back of your head that lets you know. At least there is in mine (but that could be the result of mental issues and/or beer).

Most people aren’t active participants in the elearning community. That’s OK. No one expects you to sit on the couch, eating bonbons, and chatting in the community. Most of us tend to use the community for quick help and then we go back to work.

Not being an active participant means that it’s possible you miss some really good stuff in the community. So in today’s post I am highlighting some of the free assets that your peers have recently shared in the elearning community.

Michelle Miller (Northern Arizona University, USA)

Research findings from cognitive and brain sciences are particularly relevant to improving our teaching, given that these disciplines focus on how we acquire new information and learn to use it in new contexts.

The presenter of this interactive will be drawing on her 20 years of experience as a researcher and teacher in the field of cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, as well as on themes from her book in progress tentatively titled Minds Online: What Cognitive and Brain Sciences Tell Us About Teaching with Technology.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Dr. Millers presentation materials are available at this link.  I was very impressed with her findings regarding the testing and time effects established by cognitive psychology and their applicaiton to online learning.

Recent research from Harvard http://sco.lt/6WzedN supports the design idea of including short quizzes as a way to increase learning of fundamental concepts. This is something that the LMS can do very well!

The World’s Largest Repository of Free Online Learning Tutorials

The World’s Largest Repository of Free Online Learning Tutorials | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Here’s a common scenario. Someone emails and asks about an elearning tutorial I have on the blog. It’s not always easy to find the specific tutorial buried in a given post. In fact, there are many times I either forgot that I had created that tutorial or I can’t recall where it’s at either. I know. It’s part of getting older.

Today I am going to fix that. I have listed every blog post that has a video tutorial that shows how to create something related to online learning. So, if you’re just getting started with building online learning courses (or new to the blog), now you have a handy resource with links to all sorts of rapid elearning tutorials.

"A few months ago education expert Sandy Speicher was kind enough to share her thoughts with me on the question: What's different when you look at the world of education through the lens of design?

"Today I’m proud to share the newly relaunched Design Thinking for Educators toolkit. This toolkit supports teachers in using design thinking tools to become agents of change in their classrooms, schools, and communities by designing more effective curriculum, spaces, tools, and systems. Created in partnership with educators, the toolkit includes real-world classroom experiences and an accompanying workbook to help teachers determine which challenges to address.

"Please share this free toolkit with educators in your network, and tell us: What’s your favorite tool in the new Design Thinking for Educators Toolkit?"
