Yet what most struck me came later on in proceedings, when the company’s co-founder and driving force behind the project, Sergey Brin, described his excitement at a moment when he threw his young son into the air while wearing the glasses. The spectacles had captured an image of the moment exactly as he himself had seen it. It was, Brin reported, “amazing... there was no way I could have that memory without this device." It’s a striking phrase, and it suggests to me the astonishing degree to which we are becoming able to outsource aspects of our minds and memories to the tools we carry with us.

A Real-Time Transcription App for Google Hangouts: Hangout Captions

A Real-Time Transcription App for Google Hangouts: Hangout Captions | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Hangout Captions is a new experimental app for Google Hangouts that allows you to add a real-time text transcription of what is being said inside the Hangout.

The text transcription is displayed next to the event allowing deaf or hearing-impaired participants to read and understand fully the topic being discussed.

"“By adding the +Hangout Captions app, you can either connect live text from a professional transcriptionist to your Hangout, or type right into a text box yourself to transcribe a Hangout for your friends,” Naomi Black, technical program manager for accessibility engineering wrote in a post on Google+."

"You’ll only be able to see a transcription in the Hangout Captions side panel when someone in the Hangout is providing the transcription; either through live stenography (CART or palantype) or by simply typing into the app. Live transcription isn’t automatic."

(Source: http://mashable.com/2012/07/05/google-hangout-caption/)

"Hangout Captions is an app that connects live transcription services directly into a Google+ Hangout, improving accessibility for participants who are deaf or hard of hearing."

P:S.: In late May, Google added the ability to add captions to videos uploaded to Google+.

"Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." -- About Google

Google is the most powerful nonhuman teacher ever known to actual humans. Implicitly and ceaselessly, Google performs formative assessments by collecting the following data: the content, genre and media that interests you most; when and for how long you access your external cloud brain; what your hobbies and routines are; with whom you work and communicate; who will get your November vote; and whether you prefer invigorating clean mint or enamel renewal toothpaste. By continuously refining the nuance of your sociogram, Google has already customized your next web exploration and taught itself to teach.

Google just sent out invitations to a “special event” in Kansas City on July 26 that is undoubtedly the launch of its much-anticipated fiber-to-the-home network, Gigaom reports.

Google said it wanted to build out the network so it could see what people might do with a full gigabit connection. Hopefully at the event we’ll also learn more on what Google plans to charge for access to the network as well as if it plans to share it with other ISPs.
