When Whitney Houston sang about children being the future, that’s only because open source wasn’t really much of a thing back in 1986. But it is now, and it’s the future (sorry, kiddos), so teach it well and let it lead the way. The ongoing popularity of free learning resources, classes, certificates, and more has done more to democratize education than anything else since the advent of public schooling. By this point, anyone with Internet access can receive a world-class education on their own terms and, for the most part, at no cost. Thanks to the efforts of the following websites, more and more self-directed learners work independently or in groups to better their minds. Delete the scoop?

With developments in open assessment, open educational resources, open badges etc gathering pace, how to support consistent marking of evidence submitted for open assessment requires consideration. Rubrics can help to set out the learning outcomes and measurements for assessing work, and allow multiple assessors and / or assessors who do not know the person submitting evidence, to judge the work against. The OER project, created by the University of Central Florida (UCF) and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), with funding from the NGLC, is called the “Blended Learning Toolkit,” which seeks to provide higher education institutions and instructors with a guide for developing and managing blended and online learning programs. Yet, while the Blended Learning Toolkit may have been developed by university experts for higher education, it also serves as a valuable resource for school districts and teachers interested in implementing blended and online learning programs in K-12 education. Stanford doesn't want me. I can say that because it's a documented fact: I was once denied admission in writing.
Last fall, the university in the heart of Silicon Valley did something it had never done before: It opened up three classes, including CS221, to anyone with a web connection. Lectures and assignments—the same ones administered in the regular on-campus class—would be posted and auto-graded online each week. Midterms and finals would have strict deadlines. Stanford wouldn’t issue course credit to the non-matriculated students. But at the end of the term, students who completed a course would be awarded an official Statement of Accomplishment. Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor Anant Agarwal has been named director of a new unit of MIT created to advance the school’s online-learning initiative. Agarwal will soon step down as director of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory to devote himself more fully to the online learning unit with the working title Open Learning Enterprise. He will continue to lead CSAIL until a successor is identified by Ian Waitz, dean of the school of engineering.
