K-12 Digital Learning Platform | Haiku Learning | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Haiku Learning revolves around your content. Create classroom pages, add and organize content blocks, change layouts, and publish whenever you’re ready. Embed content from YouTube, Google Docs, Maps, Skype and dozens of other third-party services or create your own from scratch. And when you’ve crafted the perfect classroom page? Resource sharing in Haiku lets you share your classes, pages, and content blocks with any other Haiku user--and use content in your own class created by other teachers.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I'm glad to see that Haiku is still in the game.  I had a sample account with them years ago and was impressed.  Well worth a look if you are shopping learning management systems.

Top 10 Tips to Use Word Clouds in eLearning - eLearning Industry

Top 10 Tips to Use Word Clouds in eLearning - eLearning Industry | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Word clouds are ideal for eLearning professionals who are looking for ways to visually represent text, whether this is content within an eLearning course or writings of the learners. Color and size can be used to denote a word's level of importance within the cloud, which helps learners to acquire and retain significant ideas (i.e. bolded words) more effectively. While word clouds are often associated with language arts eLearning courses, they can actually be used in virtually any eLearning setting.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Here's a very clever article with some thought provoking ideas. Word clouds as deliverables, word clouds as discussion prompts, word clouds for feedback to name a few.

Nick van Breda's curator insight, October 22, 11:58 AM

Interesting article. Reflections…. Self worth and achievement seem to be linked together in most of Western Society. We personalise events in our life and then begin to live from our memories, gaining a false sense of identity instead of seeing it simply as a series of skills to learn.

Takeaways:

"people who think about their own learning, make a habit of asking questions, use what they’ve learned, teach what they’ve learned to others, and enjoy the learning process on an intrinsic level all become better learners"

"these are all strategies and habits that can be adopted through practice… The smartest, most successful people in the world wouldn’t be where they are today if they weren’t skilled learners. So let’s examine which strategies we should be perfecting and how they can serve us in the long run."

Disrupt Your Grading Rut: Alternative Assessment Methods for the Online Classroom

Disrupt Your Grading Rut: Alternative Assessment Methods for the Online Classroom | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Authentic, learner-centered, collaborative assessment alternatives
Alternative assessment methods such as writing assignments, collaborative assignments, case studies, and debates can avoid the problems often associated with tests and quizzes. “There are many ways to approach assessment. It depends on the context of the course. When we teach faculty how to teach online, we try to give them a taste of a majority of those methods. I don’t know that we can cover all of them in one course, but there are multiple ways to get at the issues and make this a real-life situation for the students so they can actually learn from the process,” Pratt says.
Palloff and Pratt recommend selecting assessment methods that are learner-centered and authentic.

For my Teaching friends. Great information about assessments focusing on more than simple memorizing information. With today's "age of information", open book testing can be used, when designed appropriately, to actually teach as well as assess.

Sue Walsh's curator insight, October 17, 7:13 PM

it is a real challege to stretch thinking to real-life assessment approaches and take everyone on the journey. the focus on learner centred and authentic is great, and dare I mention the many of these approaches lend to assessment only pathways ... but thats a whole other challenge!

Competency-based education arrives at three major public institutions @insidehighered

Competency-based education arrives at three major public institutions @insidehighered | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
The Wisconsin System’s “Flexible Option” is the most extensive and established of the programs. Its five competency-based, online credentials, which range from a certificate to bachelor’s degrees, are designed mostly for adult students with some college credits but no degree. And they are offered by the system’s two-year institutions, its extension program, and the Milwaukee campus -- not the Madison campus with the lake and the 80,000-seat Camp Randall Stadium.

As a graduate of a competency based masters program at Western Governors University I can attest to significant self-directed learning skills needed to earn a 'competency based' degree.

Overcoming the Motivation Challenge in eLearning: 5 Things You Can Do

Overcoming the Motivation Challenge in eLearning: 5 Things You Can Do | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Motivation in eLearning can best be described with a U-shaped curve: novelty and enthusiasm produce high drive at the beginning, but it drops off sharply thereafter, only increasing when the end of the course is in sight. It is up to you to boost and maintain your students' motivation throughout the course, so that they will get the most out of it. Unless they have the motivation to focus and sit through the entire course, they learn nothing at all.

Though every student responds differently, here are some fundamental guidelines you can use to keep your learners motivation levels high from that first splash to the finish line.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Engagement is the name of the game. These 5 tips apply to the traditional classroom, mobile learning, blended classrooms and 100% online classes.

Competency Based Learning: The Real Revolution in Online Education Isn't MOOCs

Competency Based Learning: The Real Revolution in Online Education Isn't MOOCs | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
A small but growing number of educational institutions such as College for America (CfA), Brandman, Capella, University of Wisconsin, Northern Arizona, and Western Governors are implementing online competency-based programs. Although many are still in nascent stages today, it is becoming clear that online competencies have the potential to create high-quality learning pathways that are affordable, scalable, and tailored to a wide variety of industries. It is likely they will only gain traction and proliferate over time.
