Technology Tools for Teachers: Green Screen in the Classroom

Technology Tools for Teachers: Green Screen in the Classroom | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
What is a green screen?
In film and video, a green background can be placed behind subjects being filmed. This allows a separately-filmed background to be added to the final video. Using a green screen is a fun way to enhance any video project. Filming in front of a green screen allows any project to be virtually transported to a new location or setting.

Why use a green screen?
There are many green-screen film projects that can enhance learning in the classroom. Using a green screen can make projects more fun, interesting, and effective. For example:
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Back in the 90's I had a green screen system and video editing equipment in my middle school Language and Technology classroom at Kingsbury Middle School at Lake Tahoe. Thanks to a very generous 10 k grant from Bill Cosby I put together a video studio that mesmerized by students. We had great, pre-digital equipment. Teachers today can put together a better system than I had for a 1/10th the price. 8-) Thank you Moore's Law!

At 50 Years Old, The Challenge To Keep Up With Moore's Law | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Fifty years ago this week, a chemist in what is now Silicon Valley published a paper that set the groundwork for the digital revolution.

You may never have heard of Moore's law, but it has a lot do with why you will pay about the same price for your next computer, smartphone or tablet, even though it will be faster and have better screen resolution than the last one.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Gordon Moore is the founder of Intel. This article includes a link to NPR's "All Technology Considered".  If you who don't know about Moore's Law MUST read this article.  (It's a good read/listen for those of you who do as well! 8-)

Paul Gorski's Guide for Setting Ground Rules

Paul Gorski's Guide for Setting Ground Rules | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

From Paul Gorski's Multicultural Pavilion

"Whenever you hope to facilitate conversations on social justice concerns, whether preparing for a one-hour workshop or weaving such discussions into a year-long class, a vital first step is the development of guidelines for participation. These guidelines, often referred to as "ground rules" or "community norms," should provide the community within a workshop or class a framework to ensure open, respectful dialogue and maximum participation."

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Designed for face to face groups, this guide to essential ground rules can still be applied to online work.

Aegisub is a free, cross-platform open source tool for creating and modifying subtitles. Aegisub makes it quick and easy to time subtitles to audio, and features many powerful tools for styling them, including a built-in real-time video preview.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This looks promising. The CC requirement for online video means all online teachers need to step up their game on subtitling.  I was made aware of this product by Jeremiah Stanley, a tech-talented graduate student in my E-Learning Practicum class.

Jeremiah reported Aegisum as "...a  free, cross-platform open source tool for creating subtitles. The testing I have done with it so far let me create subtitles and load the file into YouTube and Vimeo. There is also a large number of file types you can output to with Aegisub so if the educators do not use either YouTube or Vimeo they could still caption there videos."

Jeremiah and I will drive this product hard and see where it leads.

7 mitos y realidades sobre la formación online.

Mito nro.

Mito nro. 6, usted no aprenderá mucho tomando cursos vía eLearning.
