Thanks for all of your comments and responses to my question. Perhaps the relative success of using Wibbitz depends upon the platform (if that's the right term!) upon which the web page rests. Interesting idea though.

Online learning has become one of the fastest-growing industries in education technology, and it’s not slowing down anytime soon.

The availability of mobile devices on campuses has drastically changed the playing field for e-learning. By 2020, the global mobile-learning market is on track to reach $37.8 billion, according to a new infographic from TalentLMS, a learning management system. By 2019, half of all college students will be enrolled in online courses.

Aegisub Advanced Subtitle Editor | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Aegisub is a free, cross-platform open source tool for creating and modifying subtitles. Aegisub makes it quick and easy to time subtitles to audio, and features many powerful tools for styling them, including a built-in real-time video preview.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This looks promising. The CC requirement for online video means all online teachers need to step up their game on subtitling.  I was made aware of this product by Jeremiah Stanley, a tech-talented graduate student in my E-Learning Practicum class.

Jeremiah reported Aegisum as "...a  free, cross-platform open source tool for creating subtitles. The testing I have done with it so far let me create subtitles and load the file into YouTube and Vimeo. There is also a large number of file types you can output to with Aegisub so if the educators do not use either YouTube or Vimeo they could still caption there videos."

Jeremiah and I will drive this product hard and see where it leads.

7 mitos y realidades sobre la formación online.

Mito nro.

Mito nro. 6, usted no aprenderá mucho tomando cursos vía eLearning.

Rescooped by Dennis T OConnor from 21st Century Information Fluency
Scoop.it!

Case Study: 21CIF Scoop.it Magazine

Case Study: 21CIF Scoop.it Magazine | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Teaching Information Fluency describes the skills and dispositions of information fluency adept searchers. Readers will receive in-depth information on what it takes to locate, evaluate, and ethically use digital information. The book realistically examines the abilities of Internet searchers today in terms of their efficiency and effectiveness in finding online information, evaluating it and using it ethically. Since the majority of people develop these skills on their own, rather than being taught, the strategies they invent may suffice for simple searches, but for more complex tasks, such as those required by academic and professional work, the average person’s performance is adequate only about 50% of the time. The book is laid out in five parts: an introduction to the problem and how search engine improvements are not sufficient to be of real help, speculative searching, investigative searching, ethical use and applications of information fluency. The intent of the book is to provide readers ways to improve their performance as consumers of digital information and to help teachers devise useful ways to integrate information fluency instruction into their teaching, since deliberate instruction is needed to develop fluency. Since it is unlikely that dedicated class time will be available for such instruction, the approach taken embeds information fluency activities into classroom instruction in language arts, history and science. Numerous model lessons and resources are woven into the fabric of the text, including think-alouds, individual and group search challenges, discussions, assessments and curation, all targeted to Common Core State Standards as well as information fluency competencies.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Understanding curation by creating and using a Scoop.it magazine is one of the projects in EDUC 760: E-Learning for Educators.  Constructing knowledge by skillfully tagging, annotating, and sharing information is a way to filter and use the ocean of information we live and teach with. 8-)

On the Edge: Corinthian Colleges Inc. to Close

On the Edge: Corinthian Colleges Inc. to Close | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
On a ‘Knife Edge’

Pressure to hold education companies accountable seems likely to continue. Mr. Mitchell, who is the department’s top higher-education official, signaled as much in his post on Sunday. What Corinthian students experienced "is unacceptable," he wrote, and department officials "look forward to working with Congress in an effort to improve accountability and transparency in the career-college industry."

Kevin Kinser, an associate professor at the State University of New York at Albany who studies for-profit colleges, said Corinthian’s precipitous fall from where the company was a few years ago "shows the knife edge that for-profit higher education is on."

For-profit colleges "need a supportive regulatory environment to thrive," Mr. Kinser wrote in an email to The Chronicle. "When that is gone, they don’t seem to have a lot of residual support to sustain their activities."
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Before you borrow money to finance your education do the research. Don't get cut by corporate for-profit schools that help you max out your loans while over promising on job placements.

Do the research.

Russell R. Roberts, Jr.'s curator insight, April 30, 2:16 AM

One of Corinthian College's campuses in Honolulu, Heald College, recently closed, putting approximately 16,000 business students out of class.  Kevin Kinser's warning is clear:  "Corinthian's precipitous fall from where the company was a few years ago shows the knife edge that for-profit higher education is on."  Students should be advised to avoid such institutions and opt for state-supported colleges in their communities.  Accountability and transparency are sorely lacking in for-profit ventures such as Corinthian College.  Aloha, Russ.

Accessibility Showdown? Harvard and M.I.T. Sued Over Failing to Caption Online Courses - NYTimes.com

Accessibility Showdown? Harvard and M.I.T. Sued Over Failing to Caption Online Courses - NYTimes.com | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

 By Tamar Lewin, 2/12/15:

"Advocates for the deaf on Thursday filed a federal class action against Harvard and M.I.T., saying both universities violate antidiscrimination laws by failing to provide closed captioning in their online lectures, courses, podcasts and other educational materials.

“Much of Harvard’s online content is either not captioned or is inaccurately or unintelligibly captioned, making it inaccessible for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing,” the complaint said, echoing language used in the M.I.T. complaint. “Just as buildings without ramps bar people who use wheelchairs, online content without captions excludes individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.”

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

This could be a landmark case.  Harvard and MIT have no excuse other than inertia for ignoring well established accessibility requirements for their online content.

Unlike the majority of Universities, these schools have the financial power to do anything they want. They have the resources to hire accessibility experts and instructional designers to do the job.  Close Captioning all video in an efficient and timely manner is a huge job.  But it can be done.

This statement from Harvard is ingenuous.  The rules are well known:

"Jeff Neal, a spokesman for Harvard, said that while he could not comment on the litigation, Harvard expects the United States Department of Justice to issue proposed rules later this year “to provide much-needed guidance in this area,” and that the university will follow whatever rules are adopted."

Harvard, MIT & EdX may end up causing an unexpected disruption in education: serious national attention on the rights of the disabled.
