Coursera, edX, and MOOCs Are Changing the Online Education Business | MIT Technology Review

Coursera, edX, and MOOCs Are Changing the Online Education Business | MIT Technology Review | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Students anywhere are being offered free instruction online. What will that do to the trillion-dollar education business?
"If you were asked to name the most important innovation in transportation over the last 200 years, you might say the combustion engine, air travel, Henry Ford’s Model-T production line, or even the bicycle. The list goes on.

Now answer this one: what’s been the single biggest innovation in education?

Don’t worry if you come up blank. You’re supposed to. The question is a gambit used by Anant Agarwal, the computer scientist named this year to head edX, a $60 million MIT-Harvard effort to stream a college education over the Web, free, to anyone who wants one. His point: it’s rare to see major technological advances in how people learn."

Stephen Fry Gives Advice To His 15-Year-Old Self. The Kid Should Listen. | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Wow, Stephen Fry has an incredible brain. And he generously shares his thoughts from it, including all the secrets of life he's learned through watching American reality TV shows, Facebook, and "pretentious" conversations with his friends.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Interesting video with a tech heavy slant.  Thought provoking to say the least!

Teacher Attitudes Toward Tech (EdSurge wiki)

Teacher Attitudes Toward Tech (EdSurge wiki) | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Recent surveys of teachers about their attitudes toward technology.

Just how do teachers feel about technology?

The vast majority use it--but still wary, according to a four-page report, “Technology and Effective Teaching," released in April 2012 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. (Here's a downloadable version.)

Based on a survey of 400 teachers from across the U.S., the report found that 67% of teachers use technology in every class and 85% use it every day. Their goals are clear--to help their students learn--but they remain skeptical “because there is little, widely accepted proof that technology tools provide real value for student learning.”

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I've been working with Ed-Tech for over 30 years.  Teacher attitudes have been slow to change. It's good to have lived long enough to see the results of change!

How to Be More Open to Learning New Technology

How to Be More Open to Learning New Technology | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Sometimes it can be hard to accept that you're behind the times. But it can become frustrating to maintain a stubbornness in the face of changing technology, as you'll soon be left at the mercy of those who do know.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

In my introductory class on e-learning many ofmy veteran teachers struggle in the 'student postion' when learning new technology.  This article might give them some perspective!

An Interactive Infographic Maps The Future Of Emerging Technology

An Interactive Infographic Maps The Future Of Emerging Technology | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Can speculation about the future of technology serve as a measuring stick for what we create today?

This interactive infographic makes predictions about everything from artificial intelligence and robotics to geoengineering and energy.  Mouse over the entries for blurbs describing them and links to more information; you won’t find much more than a Wikipedia page explanation, but that’s plenty helpful for the uninitiated.

Keeping pace with today's tech jargon can be daunting, but with a little guidance you'll find it's not difficult to keep up.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I'm a word guy.  I collect tech jargon like spare pennies in the change jar. I was pleasantly pleased to find that some of the terms in this article were new to me.

Are they new to you?

6th Annual Sloan-C/MERLOT Emerging Technologies for Online Learning International Symposium | EDUCAUSE.edu | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

The Sloan Consortium, MERLOT, and our Emerging Technologies steering committee welcome you to The 6th Annual Emerging Technologies for Online Learning International Symposium (ET4Online), hosted for the second consecutive year in Las Vegas, Nevada. The conference dates for the symposium are changing, in part, to allow K-12 participants and vendors a better opportunity to join the conference live. No longer a summer conference, ET4Online is moving to spring 2013 and will stay a spring conference for the foreseeable future.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I look forward to attending this conference. I'm hungry for new ideas that I can apply to our E-Learning and Online Teaching Graduate Certificate Program at UW-Stout.

Ed-Tech is never boring.  Staying with the waves of change requires balance, attention, and a future vision.

The 7 Golden Rules of Using Technology in Schools

The 7 Golden Rules of Using Technology in Schools | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Tina Barseghian:

Sometimes teachers and administrators need a kick in the pants to see what they perceive as problems re-framed in a different way. Adam S. Bellow, author of The Tech Commandments, and founder of eduTecher, spoke to a roomful of receptive teachers at the recent ISTE 2011 conference, and demonstrated some of the ironies and contradictions the education system is mired in. And he had some advice.
