Time to Dive in? A Chart of The Best Augmented Reality Apps to Use With Students

Time to Dive in? A Chart of The Best Augmented Reality Apps to Use With Students | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Augmented reality is making some huge inroads in the field of education. More and more teachers are incorporating this relatively new technology in their classrooms. Augmented reality is also redefining the notion of learning by adding a layer of interactivity, engagement and vividness to students learning experiences. Teachers have been using augmented reality in many varied ways and across different school subjects, this post from Edutopia provides some good examples in this regard. The success of AR in education is attributed to the increasing availability of mobile apps designed specifically to help learners leverage the power of AR in their learning.  Below are some very good AR apps to try out with your students. This is a work in progress and we will be adding more to the list in the future. Enjoy

Backward Design, Forward Progress

Backward Design, Forward Progress | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
First, (re)designing a course via backward design forces us to step back from our fields of expertise, which we know so well and hold so dear, and approach the learning process as novices. That is to say, we are so familiar with our disciplines and their content that it’s hard to imagine anyone not endowed with such knowledge or a burning desire to acquire it.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Online instructors are often asked to teach a course built by someone else.those given the chance to redesign a course will appreciate this interesting take on backward design.

Common Sense Media Review: Flipgrid

Common Sense Media Review: Flipgrid | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Flipgrid is a website that allows teachers to create grids of short discussion-style questions that students respond to through recorded videos. You can create up to four grids with a Flipgrid account. Grids can be classes, sections, groups of students, research groups, faculty groups, or any collection of users interested in a common strand of questions. Each grid can hold an unlimited number of questions, and each question can hold an unlimited number of responses. Questions are short, text-based prompts (think Twitter) that can include basic formatting (such as bold, italic) and links to websites or documents.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I've always been an early adopter of teaching technologies.  This one is tempting indeed. This review looks at Flipgrid for use in Grades 6-12.    I can see it working at a graduate level.

To risk a cliche: "The proof is in the pudding..."   You won't really know unless you try it.

Carlos Fosca's curator insight, September 10, 6:47 PM

A Memo to My Students Re: College and the Real World

A Memo to My Students Re: College and the Real World | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
What happens in college and what you’ll be doing in your career aren’t the same, but they aren’t as different as many of you seem to think.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I work in the real world with graduate students who are learning how to teach online. Many are already accomplished educators seeking to extend their skills to connect with a fast changing 'real world'.

That said, our Graduate Certificate classes emphasize hands on projects that apply to their jobs right now.  That's the key; what you learn in the online class you put to work in your daily routine.

Every time a student initiates a discussion they are practicing their instructor facilitation skills. Every group project delivers essential experiences needed to lead others through the terrain of technology based collaboration.

Since I teach EDUC 764 E-Learning Practicum, I push my students to change their point of view and think like online teachers. We make that transition by having them teach online in one of or graduate classes.  This is real experience, in the real world --- done virtually!
