50 Search Engines You Probably Don't Use Yet - Edudemic | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Students, teachers and the public turn to their librarians for help researching everything from technology to genealogy to homework help and lesson plans. Even if your library is equipped with subscriptions and memberships to top of the line databases and online journals, you’ve probably had to get creative during a patron’s requested search for something unfamiliar.

20 Reasons Why you Should Use Google Plus [Infographic]

20 Reasons Why you Should Use Google Plus [Infographic] | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

E-learning professionals strive to be 'ambidextrous' when it comes to social environments.

AlGonzalezinfo's curator insight, March 10, 9:05 AM

G+ is catching up big time for many reasons.  Among these reasons is the Hangout integration.

We just facilitated a remote 1.5 day leadership development session with Hangouts and it was fantastic.

Google is sticking to their strategy and their value is starting to win people over.  I was never a fan and, through valuable features, I am changing my perspective on the suite of offerings.

This is a relevant infographic.

Google Hangouts opens up another realm of possibilities for educators

.

Google Hangouts allows up to 10 people to video chat with one another. Hangouts are free and easy to use (once you download and install a browser plug-in, you’re all set). You can invite specific people to join a Hangout with you, although it’s worth noting that anyone who joins can in turn share the Hangout’s URL and invite others. As being in a Hangout appears in all the participants’ Streams, it does mean that these are public gatherings.

Google’s Hangout technology recognizes who is speaking during a session and that person’s image takes the “big screen” while other participants appear in small tiles below. In other words, there’s no squinting or tracking to try to figure out where the voice in the video conference is coming from.

It’s called G+etiquette and it’s exclusive to our newest social networking obsession. Generally, we all know how to conduct ourselves online. The basics are pretty clear like not calling each other names or trolling.

What’s a little harder to get a grasp on is G+etiquette which has all these new scary parts of it like “circles” or “reshare” or “Hangout.” Now I’m not telling you how to use Google+, I’m just supplying you with your official guide on how to be polite.

It may not seem like it, but it's been less than 90 days since Google+ was introduced to the world. Since then, we've seen many great features that have made Google+ one of the most attractive social networks around.

You can hangout on your mobile phone. They're available for phones with front-facing cameras and Android 2.3 and up. (iOS users, don't fret - support is on the way.) To find a hangout on your phone, go through your Stream and click on "Join hangout" to participate in the hangout.

Screen-Sharing Comes To Google+ Hangouts

Screen-Sharing Comes To Google+ Hangouts | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

If you were waiting for Google to release a screen-sharing feature inside the Hangout real-time collaboration platform, that time has come.

In the next 48 hours Google will be rolling out to all Google+ users the ability to screen-share during any hangout session.

From Christopher Johnson G+ post: "When we launched Hangouts with Extras last September, we wanted to test new features and get feedback from users.

We’ve learned a lot over the past few months, and today we’re rolling out a new Hangouts look and feel that incorporates some of the “extras,” and better reflects Google’s overall design ( http://goo.gl/gG1NA ).

Highlights include:

- Screensharing: share what’s on your computer screen with everyone in the hangout. This is the first of many extras we’re graduating to Hangouts proper.

- Bigger video: we’ve put more emphasis on the live video itself by optimizing white space and other screen elements."

Google+ Hangouts Now Offer Free Voice Calls

Google+ Hangouts Now Offer Free Voice Calls | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Google+ is rolling out a feature that allows its users to make free conference calls within Hangouts.

That said, you no longer need a Google account or even a computer to join the conversation. A Hangout group can now call in anyone with a phone to listen in. This could not only lure more people to Google+ and grow its user base, but also has potential to revolutionize the way both party lines and conference calls are conducted — from holding meetings to making plans with friends and family.
