eLearning (E-learning) and SCORM Simplified

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Here's an overview video on corporate training oriented e-learning. The SCORM side of thinks guarantees compatibility with any SCORM compliant Course Management Systems (CMS).

The Holy Grail of E-Learning (for me) is to build a beautiful resuable learning object (RLO) that engages a student's attention, then moves them through a series of experiences that teaches something meaningful.

This video is a simple lecture.  It doesn't really walk the engagement talk. But then sometimes, a 15 minute lecture will anwser questions and help you understand the big picture.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I use UDUTU in my computer based training course which is part of UW-Stout's online Instructional Design Certificate program: http://www.uwstout.edu/soe/profdev/instructionaldesigncert.cfm

Students learn how to design and execute a SCORM compliant reusable learning object. UDUTU provides a free online platform that helps you create an RLO.  Rather than spend hundreds of dollars on a high end program like Captivate or Articulate, try UDUTU as you learn how to build training modules.

Getting Started with SCORM: How does SCORM really work?

Getting Started with SCORM: How does SCORM really work? | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
The purpose of this series of articles is to provide an easy to understand technical explanation of how exactly the SCORM protocol works. One of the things that greatly surprised me when I first began working with SCORM was that there seemed to be a surprising lack of good, practical technical documentation

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

A free open program capable of outputting scorm is worth looking into. I have no personal experience with this product, but I'm always curious. Anyone out there who has building experience with GLO Maker?

Dennis T OConnor's comment, May 28, 2013 9:14 PM
It appears that Glomaker does not produce SCORM packages. As such, content developed with this product will not integrate into the gradebook programs of common LMS systems. If I'm wrong about this, please point me to the right information!

The Tin Can API - SCORM could do more.

Uploaded by RusticiSoftware on Sep 14, 2011
Learn more about the Tin Can API at http://scorm.com/tincan . SCORM is over 10 years old. ADL (the keepers of SCORM) asked us to research what the next-generation e-learning specification could/should look like.

We've been gathering information from the entire e-learning community about what you'd like to see in the next specification. Many of you already know about this, and many of you have participated. We have our solution — it's the Tin Can API.

The Tin Can API solves a lot of problems that older specifications suffered from, but it also adds new capabilities, new business cases, and new ways of handling content. The Tin Can API fuses a decade of collective e-learning experiences with a decade of technological advances.

Will TinCan allow us to share acomplishments perfomed inside and outside of traditional CMS?

What is SCORM?

SCORM is a set of technical standards for e-learning software products. SCORM tells programmers how to write their code so that it can “play well” with other e-learning software. It is the de facto industry standard for e-learning interoperability. Specifically, SCORM governs how online learning content and Learning Management Systems (LMSs) communicate with each other. SCORM does not speak to instructional design or any other pedagogical concern, it is purely a technical standard.

This article provides a great foundation on understanding Sharable Content Object Reference Model or SCORM for short. The article makes a comparison of the SCORM standard for education to the DVD standard for movies.
