SPECIAL CONFERENCE EDITIO Sloan-C Symposium on Emerging Technologies in Online Learning

SPECIAL CONFERENCE EDITIO Sloan-C Symposium on Emerging Technologies in Online Learning | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

HIGHLIGHTS FROM:

6th Annual International Symposium for Emerging Technologies for Online Learning

A conference devoted to the emerging and innovative uses of technology designed to improve teaching and learning online

Las Vegas, Nevada April 9-11, 2013

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I enjoyed attending this symposium. The size was just right, about 800 with a wide variety of presentations and ideas.  This site provides you with a strong archive of those presentations.

I always ask myself what is one strong 'take away' from all this exposure to emerging tech.  Honestly, very little of what I learned was new, but I was struck by the prediction that Gesture Based computing would be a major part of the near future.

One more interesting technology to track!

With Augmented Reality, Wallit App Assigns Virtual Walls to Physical Places

With Augmented Reality, Wallit App Assigns Virtual Walls to Physical Places | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Released Tuesday for iPhone and iTouch, Wallit is hailed by Berk as the world’s first “social augmented reality app.” Like Facebook, it enables you to interact with your friends. Like Twitter, it only lets you write in short 140-character bursts. Like Foursquare, its digital benefits are based on where you go in the real world. But Wallit combines these features — and more — in an entirely new way.
The app is essentially a virtual wall for physical locations.

BodyWave lets you control a PC with your mind - without a headset

BodyWave lets you control a PC with your mind - without a headset | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
A bio-feedback armband called BodyWave is the first of its kind to measure brainwave activity through the body, not the scalp. Instead of an EEG headset recording a user's concentration level, the Bodywave reads brainwaves at the arm by measuring the electric current given off by neurons firing in the brain. Bundled with an interactive software package called Play Attention, it reportedly enables interactive feedback and training towards peak mental performance. Apart from the obvious potential in sport, its ability to train attention and teach stress-control in mobile situations (much less obtrusively than wearing a headset) opens up wider potential. It has already found applications in education, industry and the military as well as in improving the lives of people with disabilities like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

DEPTHJS | MIT Media Lab DepthJS allows any web page to interact with the Microsoft Kinect using Javascript. | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Navigating the web is only one application of the framework we built - that is, we envision all sorts of applications that run in the browser, from games to specific utilities for specific sites. The great part is that now web developers who specialize in Javascript can work with the Kinect without having to learn any special languages or code. We believe this will allow a new set of interactions beyond what we first developed.
