Creative Ways To Use Skype In The Classroom

The answer: in more ways than you could imagine. While Skype was not designed as an educational tool, it’s quickly becoming one as teachers discover the many ways it enriches their lessons and the lives of their students. Even something as simple as hosting a guest speaker through a video call can add excitement to a lesson.

As with any tech tool, it can seem daunting to introduce this into your classroom at first. If you don’t know where to start, try one of these five creative ideas.

Skype is a great tool to use in learning as it provides real time engagement with experts. This a great article with ideas about thinking outside of the box when integrating Skype.

Phil Hobrla's curator insight, March 17, 2015 12:04 AM

Microsoft recently showcased a new Skype feature that allows for real-time, two-way, voice translation! This feature will make the Skype Cultural Exchange even more extensible and will allow those who use Skype for non-native language acquisition to have in-depth conversations, in their own languages, about their progress and issues in their learning.

Best Ways to Connect and Collaborate with Teachers Globally - EdTechReview™ (ETR)

Best Ways to Connect and Collaborate with Teachers Globally - EdTechReview™ (ETR) | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Educators have recognized the power of collaboration and are making special efforts to connect with one another around the world. Connecting with expert educators and decision makers helps educators develop professionally. Educators alone gather information by doing individual researches but what results in greater achievements is collaboration between such educators. Connected Educator Month is one of the best examples to express how interested educators are nowadays towards collaboration. 170+ education organizations, companies and communities have been involved in CEM 12 conducted by US Department of Education. With the huge success of CEM 12, US Dept. of Education has decided to conduct its next annual event and it’s now going on greatly. You may see the list of events in aninfographic created by EdTechReview India. Apart from that, there are many other ways educators frequently use to connect and collaborate with one another. Let’s learn about them.

10 Tips For An Effective Global Collaboration - Edudemic

10 Tips For An Effective Global Collaboration - Edudemic | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

This post was co-authored by Danielle Hartman, English/Literacy Specialist, Technology Integration teacher, Burlington County Institute of Technology, NJ, USA @danielle6849and Miriam Orlando, ESL teacher and teacher trainer, Liceo Celio-Roccati, Rovigo, Italy, EU @miriam2065

Creating an effective global collaboration isn't easy. But once you master these quick tips, you'll be ready and itching to collaborate with many others!

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Collaboration lights the learning fires: International, national, regional... oh just get outside of the school walls!

Back in the Compuserve days I ran a 'sneaker net' collaboration between my rural middle school kids in Nevada and a high school class in Tatebashia Japan. It was one of the most dynamic experiences of my teaching career.  These days the technology is so much more transparent. I had to gather word processed letters on a disk and send them out via my home 300 baud modem on Friday nights. Now you can interact in real time.

If you haven't tried global collaboration with your students, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Tom Malone's MIT Center for Collective Intelligence is emerging as the single most active researchsite for studying augmented collective intelligence. -- Howard

"If we want to predict what's going to happen, especially if we want to be able to take advantage of what's going to happen, we need to understand those possibilities at a much deeper level than we do so far. That's really our goal in the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence, which I direct. In fact, one way we frame our core research question there is: How can people and computers be connected so that—collectively—they act more intelligently than any person, group or computer has ever done before? If you take that question seriously, the answers you get are often very different from the kinds of organizations and groups we know today."

Abstract

A co-teaching online environment has the potential to help more efficiently meet the needs of online learners and provide greater satisfaction for instructors. A well-trained pair of instructors can complement each other, meeting student needs in a timely manner, as well as providing students with the opportunity to view topics from different perspectives, and to gain more in-depth feedback about their work. Specific strategies for a successful online co-teaching experience, including: how to create a successful online learning community; achieve effective course management; provide systematic, in-depth assessment of student learning; and providing timely feedback will be addressed. Methods to improve upon one-another’s teaching strengths will be introduced as well as building community between your peer co-teacher and students.

Shekema Silveri:

When considering connectivity inside the classroom, it is important to begin by determining what it means to be a connected learner in the 21st century.  Specifically, each of us (adults included) must ask ourselves the following questions: What are the benefits of connecting with others? What opportunity costs are associated with becoming/remaining connected? How do we successfully determine which communities to which we should connect/ belong? - See more at: http://blog.successatthecore.com/an-issue-of-connectivity/#sthash.kkv4qbcn.dpuf
