Joyce Valenza Says: New Google Voice Typing & Transcription works!

Joyce Valenza Says: New Google Voice Typing & Transcription works! | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

From the NeverEnding Search by Joyce Valenza: "

Google introduced a voice typing feature that resembles a dictation app.

It’s free.  It works in the Chrome browser. And it is available in an array of 40 languages!

My test below reveals that it is also pretty darn accurate and pretty darn sweet.  (Sure, I talked a little slower that usual and sure, I will need to  edit a bit.)"

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Joyce Valenza provides several videos to demonstrate this new feature. Since we include Closed Captioning and transcript creation in our EDUC 760 E-Learning For Educators course, I need to get on top of this technology quickly! ~ Dennis

A useful tool for those who made the leap from Windows XP to Windows 7 (or 8) and desperately need the "What U Hear" feature back in their lives...

LJPSaveSaveSave's comment, May 22, 2013 9:42 PM
This is the most awesome thing in the universe for people who own Windows 7. I tried it out and it actually works the same as "What U Hear"

Exploring the Many Options That Make Recording Easy | NY Times

Exploring the Many Options That Make Recording Easy | NY Times | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

By Kit Eaton

"Remember pocket voice recorders, and their fiddly (but cute) miniature cassette tapes that stored your business memos and interviews? These gadgets have largely gone the way of the dodo, because digital voice recorders replaced them. Digital recorders don’t need the tiny tapes, they can record with less audio distortion and they offer extras like easy downloading of your recordings to a computer.

Voice Recorder HD by eFusion is one of the most highly regarded voice recorder apps.

"But nowadays even digital voice recorders are at risk of extinction because smartphone apps can do many of the same tasks.

"One of the most highly regarded voice recorder apps is Voice Recorder HD by eFusion. It is a $2 iOS app (also a $2 app for Samsung Android tablets). Its maker says it appeals to business users and even sound professionals. The app is graphically sophisticated and its interface is stripped down to the minimal components you need for recording sound."

Teaching Without Walls: Life Beyond the Lecture: Are Online Students Hiding Behind Text?

Teaching Without Walls: Life Beyond the Lecture: Are Online Students Hiding Behind Text? | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Today, texting is the preferred communication method for most young people. It is used to get immediate answers to questions, find out what friends are up to, send grocery lists to oneself, reply to voicemails, and even end relationships. I've seen many educators express concerns about how texting is fragmenting writing, grammar, and spelling skills but I have another question that I'm probing. Are online classes allowing our students to hide behind text?

Moving at the Speed of Creativity | Document Field Trip Learning with AudioBoo

Moving at the Speed of Creativity | Document Field Trip Learning with AudioBoo | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

As a free audio service with free smartphone apps for both iPhone and AndroidAudioBoo is an ideal platform to use on a student field trip to document experiences with both audio and images. This morning I accompanied my 3rd grade daughter’s class to the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City, as a parent volunteer. In advance I created a 1 page flyer for other parents who might be interested in also using AudioBoo with their student group.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

AudioBoo is a terrific progrm.  I've used it a few times over the past months. Here's a fine teacher's thinking on how use smartphoned based podcasting in a unique way.

How To Make Great Radio: An Illustrated Guide Starring Ira Glass | Brain Pickings

How To Make Great Radio: An Illustrated Guide Starring Ira Glass | Brain Pickings | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

By Maria Popova

"When correctly harnessed, radio can be as emotional, as funny and as satisfying as the best motion pictures."

"In 1999, the staff of This American Life invited cartoonist Jessica Abel to spend several weeks with them. The result was Radio: An Illustrated Guide (public library), in which Abel peeks inside the hood of the beloved radio show to reveal what makes it hum and teach us how “to lift Radio to its true potential” — a fine addition to other echelons of comics as nonfiction, most similar in ethos and sensibility to fellow public radio maven Brooke Gladstone’s The Influencing Machine."

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

We all have the power of the podcast.  Make a podcast and you get just a taste of what it takes to make a radio show.  I admire Ira Glass and his work on this American Life.( I subscribe to the podcast.)

SoundGecko

SoundGecko | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

SoundGecko is a service that let’s users listen to any article on the web, on the go, anywhere.

Many learners/practitioners etc., commute to their learning environment and back every day, spending up to 40 minutes or more on the bus/train etc.

SoundGecko provides an easier way to catch up/keep up with web content, without squinting at the tiny text on their mobile - they just listen.

There’s three different ways of sending articles to SoundGecko: website, email or a browser (Chrome) plugin.

In a matter of seconds, SoundGecko will send users an email with a link to the MP3 file that they can listen to, on any device.

Users can do all of this for free, without downloading an app and without registration.

If users do register, they get to use the iPhone app and also Google Drive/Dropbox sync that lets them listen to all your articles easily.

Pedagogical roles for audio in online learning

Pedagogical roles for audio in online learning | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

In an earlier post I complained that video is not being used enough in online learning in post-secondary education, and when it is used, it is often poorly used. The same applies to audio – perhaps to a lesser extent in terms of amount of use (podcasting and audio clips are is now quite common) – but its full potential is still often unrealised.

Again, we can learn a lot from earlier research done on radio and audio-cassettes in the 1970s and 1980s at the Open University.
