Teacher quits over emphasis on standardized tests: 'It takes the joy out of learning' - TODAY.com

Teacher quits over emphasis on standardized tests: 'It takes the joy out of learning' - TODAY.com | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

A teacher in Massachusetts who has spent more than a quarter century in the classroom is drawing attention after she quit her job over her growing frustration with the school system’s emphasis on standardized testing.

Because of “so many things that pulled me away from the classroom and fractured my time with the children,” kindergarten teacher Susan Sluyter quit last month.

“It takes the joy out of learning for the children," she told TODAY. "It takes the joy out of teaching.”

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I left the classroom at the end of the 'Nation at Risk' era. I was fed up with top down mandates that put kids learning low on the priority list.

I dodged the NCLB freight train and have retained my teaching spirit while working online for more than a decade.

Unfortunately this is the style of learning in China, where my teachers come from.   I have been told to take the fun out of the learning to concentrate on giving only useful information.  It has taken the joy out of my teaching...or can I be subversive???

Aunty Alice's curator insight, April 6, 3:25 PM

Have a very similar mindset but short of opening one's own school we are stuck with it. I have just published a book leading teachers to the more fertile ground for real progress, in literacy acquisition,  of analysing student work, giving them an authentic voice, and goal setting.  It puts listening and speaking at the centre.

Dr. Richard NeSmith's curator insight, April 6, 7:28 PM

Will we ever learn in America? uhmmm...that is a rhetorical question, btw.   ;-)

Greg Thompson:

"Lurie believes the hybrid approach is one way to enhance knowledge and branch out from the lecture-based instruction that can grow stale, even when it comes from the best teachers. EdX-blended AP courses "could also provide a level playing field for all schools and all teachers, where in effect our courses become sort of a talking textbook," he says. "MOOCs can be a new set of resources for use by teachers locally in their own classrooms."

Integration of MOOCs into high school advanced placement courses?  Hmmm, on one hand it is definitely an exciting development for driving student achievement and on the other making them a requirement may be dubious.  Gauging the difficulty and organization of materials will be of the utmost importance.  Some MOOC providers have started to do this with ratings such as introductory and scholar.

in classe

- ogni argomento è presentato contemporaneamente a tutti

- ogni argomento è necessario a comprendere il successivo

- ogni argomento è compreso in percentuali diverse da ognuno

- allora alcuni alunni rimangono indietro

con self-paced learning

- ogni studente può passare ad argomento successivo quando è sicuro di aver compreso pienamente il precedente

Speed is an Invaluable Commodity in Classrooms and Lecture Halls: Students' Need for Readiness and Efficiency

To convey knowledge to the students we currently teach, over preparation is still better than too little. iDesk.tv is one way to appear totally prepared and knowledgeable about the world outside of classrooms and lecture halls. Because most students engage social media at hyper-speed, and this disposition is ingrained and forecasts how they will 'work' in the future, facilitators need to prove that their desktops are organized to meet that relatively new inclination and perception.

iDesk allows facilitators to take advantage of teachable moments (Havighurst, 1952) or switch media quickly to prevent digression or loss of direction toward a thematic objective. Furthermore, allowing students to see their Symbaloo homepage (for instance) prepared for a lesson unit or entire course with tiles that are subject specific and linked to pertinent lesson materials, theories, and videos (as on iDesk) models how they too can harness the semiotic power of their multimodality (Hull & Nelson, 2005) worlds. Also, don't be too quick to judge this attitude unfriendly to speakers of other languages because visual online preparedness allows instructors to return to subject matter seamlessly if informal assessment proves the need.

Researching the Potential of K-12 MOOCsTuesday, June 18, 2013, 3:00-4:00 PM ET

MOOCs, also known as Massive Open Online Courses, have been called the Innovative Disruption and Top Tech Trend of the year (Watters, 2012). MOOCs can offer a break from the traditional system. Instead of offering elite education to a selected few, education is being offered to the masses, for free. By offering “open” online courses by qualified instructors from around the world, any learner can learn. What are the best practices of MOOCs and how can connectivist theory be applied to K-12 learning environments? This session will investigate open learning and how MOOCs have led to innovation and new opportunities in K-12 learning environments. Current research as well as potential for future research will be examined.
