Google Drive in Class: 38 Ideas by Sean Junkins | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

August 11, 2014
This is the third post in a series of posts aimed at helping teachers and educators make the best out of Google Drive in classrooms. This series comes in a time when teachers are getting ready to start a new school year and hopefully will provide them with the necessary know-how to help them better integrate Google Drive in their teaching pedagogy. The two previous posts featured in this series were entitled consecutively "New Google Drive Cheat Sheet" and "Teachers Visual Guide to Google Drive Sharing". Today's post covers some interesting ideas and tips on how to go about using Google Drive in your classroom. This work is created by Sean Junkins from SeansDesk.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Spark your thinking and get in gear for a new school year. Grab an idea and delve deeper using the resources developed by Sean Junkins.

App Smashing: Combining Google Drive, iTunes U, And Apps In The Classroom - Edudemic

App Smashing: Combining Google Drive, iTunes U, And Apps In The Classroom - Edudemic | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Many schools that have adopted one-one tablet technology struggle with the pre-requisite skills associated with moving files from app to app. This process is now called App Smashing, and when you learn how to use it to your advantage, it really does make things nice and simple.

Workflow is king and the easier it is to distribute content, create solutions, and then store that information for feedback, the more success you will have in the digital classroom.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

The phrase that jumped out at me is "Workflow is king..." . The classroom is all about flow.

The use of tablets can be daunting when it comes to getting your documents to go where you want them to go. So, flow seems a good topic to investigate.

Slide on into this article. It will help!

Google Docs & Research: How-To?

Google Docs & Research: How-To? | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

When students are doing research, they sometimes struggle with citing their sources or moving beyond a quick search with Google.com. The Google Docs Research Pane helps to facilitate searching for and citing sources. By going to Tools –> Research, the Research Pane pops up on the right hand side! You can search Google, images, scholar, quotes, and dictionary! By dragging and dropping certain content (e.g. images), not only will the material appear, but a footnote (in MLA, Chicago, or APA format).

Giving Students Feedback With Kaizena (Voice Comments) Tutorial

Published on Sep 10, 2013

Use your voice to give students feedback about their papers in Google Docs. I've only played with this a little bit so far, but I'm really excited to be able to use Kaizena to give my students feedback this year. Being able to add links to resources and reuse those links for other students is so helpful. If you have questions I'm on twitter @JenRoberts1 and the guys who make kaizena are @kaizenaFB if you have feedback for them, or email founders@kaizena.com

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Adding evaluation comments with a voice recording makes the feedback so much more real!

I Teach English to Great Kids...A Blog: Plagiarism and the Google Tools to Reduce It | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Jennifer Roberts:
I find plagiarism to be rare among my students. By rare I mean it occurs less than once or twice per major assignment. Some times it is intentional and some times unintentional. Sometimes it is almost the whole paper and other times just a few sentences borrowed and not cited.  Sometimes it is a sign of laziness and other times it is a call for help from a student who really did not know how else to tackle the essay. It is always a teachable moment and I almost never see a second offense from the same student.

A useful video tutorial here, just over 16 minutes long. It runs through the basics of using Google drive and how you can use it to collaborate with others. It also touches on Google Hangout.

I use Google Drive with my students as a writing space because I teach English via Skype. It suits our needs perfectly. Students create several folders e.g. some are homework spaces; collaborative areas such as wikis; creative writing pages and as a virtual space that we can jump into during the lesson to work on activities. It works for us. As a teacher I can dip into shared spaces at any time and guide and support learning which is a real advantage.

flea palmer's curator insight, August 30, 2013 6:56 AM

This is a really thorough tutorial and very timely as I'm currently exploring using Google Drive with students. Our dispersed team of Learning Technologists already use it for collaboration but there is not much use as yet by our academics and students. The ability to be able to integrate Drive with Google Hangouts is really powerful and has the potential to be a great tool for supporting Distance Learning.

The Free Alternative
The interesting question is could you create a web marketing business with NO money for websites or blogs? Yes is the answer to that question. By using free tools such as Google Drive, Scoop.it and Blogger or WordPress you could create a business without paying anything to web development.

You might find that business is limited in scale, but so what. Your cost is  limited to your sweat equity to create a revenue stream and THEN buy the website improvements you need to go to the next level. I just build a MagentoGo store (Story of Cancer Store: http://storyofcancer.gostorego.com/ ;) and the same thing is ALMOST true for Ecom.

Between Storify, Volusion and Magento you can create a store for sweat equity + $500 (give or take). My little store has already made $130 inside of its first month so well on its way to paying for its serving costs.

The ultimate lesson of crowdfunding and crowdsourcing is DO NOTHING until it is worth the investment to do so :).
