6 Online Collaboration Tools and Strategies For Boosting Learning - eLearning Industry

6 Online Collaboration Tools and Strategies For Boosting Learning - eLearning Industry | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Sharon Thomson:

These online group collaboration tools have enabled smooth and fast communication, collaboration among distantly located students and their instructors. Thus students can gain more from the experience of their instructors. These tools along with instructional design and implementation strategies devised by instructors has led to enhancement of knowledge and sharpening of students’ skills. This has allowed educational benefits to reach to more and more students globally beyond the confines of classrooms

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

It is interesting to see the corporate e-learning world opening up to the power of collaboration and discussion. Well crafted, expertly facilitated online learning is more often found on the Academic side of the online world. This article, aimed at corporate trainers, provides a solid introduction to an essential topic.  You'll also find an eclectic list of time shifted and real time tools.

"Over the years as a consultant and as the Instructional Design Practice Lead at SweetRush, I have literally reviewed tens of thousands of storyboard pages from instructional designers (IDs). Does that make you feel a bit exhausted? Me too. Well, they only come at me 100 pages at a time, so it really isn’t so bad, right? Good thing I love my job!

Interview with Nik Peachey: Publishing, eLearning Trends and Technology

Interview with Nik Peachey: Publishing, eLearning Trends and Technology | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

What I really like about e-publishing and in particular blogging, is the immediacy of the process. You can have an idea today and publish it today and by tomorrow you can start reading peoples responses to that idea. For me that’s really fantastic and I get a real buzz from it and learn so much from doing it. Often the responses and the interaction I get as a result of that cause me to modify and rethink my ideas and beliefs, so I continue to learn from what I do.

UW-Stout E-Learning Professor to receive Sloan national online teaching award

UW-Stout E-Learning Professor to receive Sloan national online teaching award | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Susan Manning works in a virtual world.
Since 2007 she has taught exclusively online for University of Wisconsin-Stout. It makes perfect sense: she teaches classes on the subject of online teaching.

"For me, the world of work has always been online," she said.
With no need to be on campus, Manning lives in Aurora, Ill. She has never been to UW-Stout, although she is very much a part of it because of daily interaction with students, faculty and administrators.

She will be representing the university in person, however, Thursday, Nov. 21, when she receives one of the highest honors available in her field, a national Sloan Consortium online teaching award.

"I'm very honored and excited to receive such a prestigious national award," said Manning, who cited administrative support from UW-Stout as a key to her effectiveness as an online instructor.

The award will be presented at the Sloan-C International Conference on Online Learning in Florida. Manning and a professor from the University of Vermont will receive the award. The Sloan Consortium is regarded as the leading professional online learning society.
    Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Susan teaches the Instructional Design for E-learning course in our E-Learning and Online Teaching Graduate Certificate as well as the  Instructional Strategies and Assessment Methods course in the Instructional Design Certificate program.

She is part of an exceptional group of dedicated online teachers.  I've worked with Susan since she began that the university and I can personally attest to her generous professionalism and exceptional skills.

She makes me proud to be an online teacher!

    Patricia Christian's curator insight, November 20, 2013 4:41 PM

Dr. Manning is expert in her field.  I have taken courses through UW Stout and had the priviledge of sitting under her instruction for one course in Instructional Design.  If you are vacilating on  becoming an online instructor my recommendation is to sign up at UW at Stout.  You will not regret making this institution your choice.

    Nancy Woodward's E-Learning Reflective Journal

    Nancy Woodward's E-Learning Reflective Journal | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
I was excited to learn more about e-learning in my E-Learning for Educators class and beginning with week 1, I was learning useful information. When we started the class, I immediately realized that my classmates are a wealth of information. This helped me to see that this is the case in an online class. It seems the students begin to depend on each other to assist with their learning. I really enjoyed the collective knowledge that was shared throughout the class.

Although I have some experience with online teaching and learning, I learned so much each and every week. It was interesting to really dig into the how and why of e-learning. For example, I’ve lead online discussions but this time I was able to delve into the readings and learn more about tone, voice and critical thinking and then practice using those skills.
    Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Nancy Woodward is a recent graduate of UW-Stout's E-Learning and Online Teaching Certificate Program.  She is a veteran online teacher with a superb understanding of online teaching. Watching her progress through the program showed me just how rich a learning experience a life long learner like Nancy can create for herself (and her classmates).

Congratulations on completing your practicum Nancy!

How Long Does it Take to Create Learning? (On Demand Corporate Training)

    Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Here's a fascinating presentation that parses the complexities of estimating e-learning design time.  We are talking about corporate training development, not academic facilitated course ID.

The presentation gives you hard numbers for the cost of three different levels of online on-demand course design. The costs are broken down in a number of detailed graphs.  You get to see just what it takes to develop an hour of corporate training.

If you are struggling with how to price services, or you need to justify the cost of instructional design, this presentation will serve you well.

eLearning Trends That Will Fizzle, Sizzle, or Simmer in 2014

eLearning Trends That Will Fizzle, Sizzle, or Simmer in 2014 | E-Learning and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

    By Sharon Boller

Our industry is notorious for chasing after trends. We all enjoy reading the summaries of the past year – and seeing predictions for the new one. Most folks want to know: which trends are worth pursuing and which ones are going to fizzle? Is gamification going to go the way of Myspace and Foursquare? Will social learning be replaced by “isolation learning” (okay, I made that up)?

At any point in time, there are trends that sizzle, others that simmer, and ones that fizzle out. The really, really good ones become “best practices” over the long haul. So let’s see what’s on the stove right now.

    Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Somethings always cooking in e Learning. Here's a short term forecast article about what's hot (and what's no so hot).

Of particular interest is the clarification of what's realistic in 'mobile learning'.  Do you want to take a whole course on your phone?  I'd do one on my tablet, but the phone (for me) is about quick references and targeted informational search... (not to mention actually talking to people in real time.)
