So what defines deeper learning? This group has identified six competencies: mastering content, critical thinking, effective written and oral communication, collaboration, learning how to learn, and developing academic mindsets.

How Much Multitasking Should Be Done In The Classroom? - Edudemic

How Much Multitasking Should Be Done In The Classroom? - Edudemic | E-learning and On-Line Teaching | Scoop.it
“Ability to multitask”. That phrase is seen on nearly every job description that I’ve ever read. It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in or what job you’re applying for – everyone expects everyone to be able to multitask. But what does that mean, exactly? Does it mean being able to work on three things at …

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, July 14, 7:38 PM

Multi-tasking stands in the way of creativity, learning, and getting the job done well.

Marian Royal Vigil's curator insight, July 15, 3:49 PM

Some of the findings here are alarming.  I know that technology has made it much harder for me to focus make the most efficient and effective use of my time.  We don't really "multitask", weflit between things sequentially and usually don't do any of them as well as we would if we did only one thing at a time.

Making Sense of Learning

Making Sense of Learning | E-learning and On-Line Teaching | Scoop.it

Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, April 28, 4:13 PM

Learning can make sense and is similar to how we make sense of other things. We do it gradually through experiences and building knowledge as we go. Talking, thinking, and reflecting about learning are the key factors to understanding. In the sense-makers guide,  Watkins writes that there are four teaching practices that can help learners make sense of their learning:

> Notice learning

> Have conversations about learning

> Reflect on your learning

> Make learning an object of learning.

17 Great Curation Teachers On Scoop.it & What Is A Curation Collision | E-learning and On-Line Teaching | Scoop.it

Curation Collisions Create SURPRISE & Surprise Matters
We are OLD even when we are young now. There is no way to remain YOUNG for very long with so much information chasing us. The next generation lives on their phones the one after may be searching the web and emailing as they look through their Google Glass.

Scoop.it CEO @Guillaume Decugismade an interesting offhand suggestion about curation to me a few weeks ago. Guillaume noted how important curation becomes when we slouch toward the point when everything that ever NEEDS to be written has been written.

Guillaume means what I call "rich snippet" curation or content curation where the hand of the curator is present and accounted for. This is the kind of curation many great teacher helped me learn over the past few years - a skill that feels increasingly important in a way that reminds me of how I felt about SEO before there was a new sheriff in town named Navneet Panda.

We learn best by DOING and this GooglePlus post says THANKS to kind and patient teachers who you should FOLLOW on Scoopit  and learn content curaiton too:

Computer coding and Computational Thinking is this generation's must-have second language. To be competitive in the world of technology, software development know-how is desperately needed. If we can begin as early as elementary school, students will be better prepared to compete for jobs in most any field.

Get The Math

Get The Math | E-learning and On-Line Teaching | Scoop.it

description by the Scout Project

"How does math get used in the "real world?" The short answer is that it is used to create hip-hop music, in fashion design, and through a number of other endeavors. This interactive website combines video and web interactive to help young people develop algebraic thinking skills for solving real-world problems. The series is funded by The Moody's Foundation, along with assistance from WNET and American Public Television. The sections of the site include The Challenges, Video, and Teachers. In The Challenges area, users will find video segments profiling the various young professionals who use math in their work, along with interactive tools to help students solve the challenges they are presented with. Moving on, the Teachers area includes resources for teachers, such as a training video showing how to use project materials in the classroom, along with student handouts. Visitors shouldn't miss the Basketball challenge, featuring NBA player Elton Brand talking about the problems presented by free throw shooting."

While textbooks are clearly not obsolete, schools like Lawrence Intermediate School are learning to adapt to the impact the Internet is having on students — and figuring out how to take advantage of what it has to offer.
