How Storytelling Inspires Children to Learn English ~ Edutopia

How Storytelling Inspires Children to Learn English ~ Edutopia | E-learning and On-Line Teaching | Scoop.it

by Matthew James Friday

"Storytelling has tremendous benefits for classroom learning, as I discussed in my post Why Storytelling in the Classroom Matters. This time, I want to further explore those benefits, in particular how storytelling inspires children to learn English.

"The motivation for this comes from my recent experience of teaching in an international school in China that has a 97 percent cohort of students learning English as an additional language (EAL). In my Grade 3 class last year, I had four students join with no English and as many again with very basic language skills. I worried that I would struggle to engage these students as both a teacher and a storyteller.

15 Lesson Plans For Making Students Better Online Researchers ~ Global Digital Citizen Foundation

15 Lesson Plans For Making Students Better Online Researchers ~ Global Digital Citizen Foundation | E-learning and On-Line Teaching | Scoop.it

"Google is usually one of the first places students turn to when tasked with an assignment. Whether it’s for research, real-time results, or just a little digital exploration … it’s important they know how to properly Google. Lucky for teachers (and students, of course), Google has a handy set of lesson plans that are just waiting to be unleashed upon the leaders of tomorrow.

"While I understand there’s a LOT more to research than just Googling, it’s important to note that this is where nearly all students start their research. Therefore, it’s a critical skill if they’re going to start down the right paths.

"Below are 15 lesson plans courtesy of Google designed to make students better online researchers. They’re organized by difficulty and meant to help students (and everyone) become better online searchers."

Deborah Fillman's curator insight, December 15, 2014 8:47 PM

This is a pet peeve of mine--schools are still not teaching kids how to do this properly, with disastrous results. Whether you homeschool or send a child to school, these lessons will help them use the Internet more effectively (and responsibly) for research projects.

Get The Math | E-learning and On-Line Teaching | Scoop.it

description by the Scout Project

"How does math get used in the "real world?" The short answer is that it is used to create hip-hop music, in fashion design, and through a number of other endeavors. This interactive website combines video and web interactive to help young people develop algebraic thinking skills for solving real-world problems. The series is funded by The Moody's Foundation, along with assistance from WNET and American Public Television. The sections of the site include The Challenges, Video, and Teachers. In The Challenges area, users will find video segments profiling the various young professionals who use math in their work, along with interactive tools to help students solve the challenges they are presented with. Moving on, the Teachers area includes resources for teachers, such as a training video showing how to use project materials in the classroom, along with student handouts. Visitors shouldn't miss the Basketball challenge, featuring NBA player Elton Brand talking about the problems presented by free throw shooting."

Here's What Some Teens Are Using Instead Of Snapchat And Instagram To Share Pictures In Class - Business Insider | E-learning and On-Line Teaching | Scoop.it

"I went home last week and did everything one normally does over the holidays: I got together with my family and, in the spirit of Christmas, grilled my teenage cousins about what apps they're using on their iPhones.

They named two of the usual suspects, Snapchat and Instagram. They laughed in my face when I asked what they thought about Facebook. "It's for moms," one explained to me.

Insightful, but not out of the ordinary. Then my 13-year-old cousin asked me if I knew what AirDrop was."

Multi-tasking stands in the way of creativity, learning, and getting the job done well.

Marian Royal Vigil's curator insight, July 15, 2014 3:49 PM

Some of the findings here are alarming.  I know that technology has made it much harder for me to focus make the most efficient and effective use of my time.  We don't really "multitask", weflit between things sequentially and usually don't do any of them as well as we would if we did only one thing at a time.
