College costs more and more, even as it gets objectively worse. Only people worse off than indebted grads: adjuncts

Very nice insight into the political context underlying the US-MOOC discussion.

 

All true, any MOOC "solution" should have answers.

 

The conclusions are clear:

 

STUDENTS:
college does not assure a nice future income, it only assures a crippling debt (i.e. edu is no longer a vehicle for upward social mobility). There are far more effective and efficient ways to have a nice life (for inspiration see the uncollege movement). 

 

ASPIRING PhD STUDENTS:
don't do it !!! (unless you are prepared to live the rest of your life as a monk) Look at it this way: in the 17th century we imported Africans to work at the cotton plantations, currently we are importing Asians to do PhD's. Advice: if you are good with numbers become an investment analyst;  if you love texts, become a lawyer.

 

Be like Elon Musk, drop out on your first day as a PhD student.

Dr. Carol Dweck of Stanford University has been studying people’s mindsets towards learning for decades. She has found that most people adhere to one of two mindsets: fixed or growth.


The Internet is a dream for someone with a growth mindset. Between Khan Academy, MOOCs, and others, there is unprecedented access to endless content to help you grow your mind. However, society isn’t going to fully take advantage of this without growth mindsets being more prevalent. So what if we actively tried to change that? What if we began using whatever means are at our disposal to start performing growth mindset interventions on everyone we cared about?

Google bemoeit zich steeds intensiever met het onderwijs. Nu komen ze met Google Classroom. Dit artikel in THE Journal spreekt zelfs van een gratis elektronische leeromgeving. Die typering lijkt me niet terecht, als je naar de functionaliteit kijkt. Als ik het goed begrijp faciliteert Google vooral de workflow rond het geven, maken, inleveren, becommentariëren en beoordelen van opdrachten. Daarbij is sprake van een koppeling met Google Docs. Als je uitgaat van een digitale leer- en werkomgeving op basis van een portaalomgeving, dan kan deze toepassing daar een zinvol onderdeel van zijn. We moeten ons daarbij wel realiseren dat we a) nog afhankelijker worden van Google, b) er nog steeds issues zijn rond eigenaarschap van data, privacy en veiligheid, en c) Google een historie heeft als het gaat om het lanceren maar ook weer om zeep helpen van applicaties (denk aan Google Reader of Google Waves). En waarom kiezen bedrijven als Google vaak voor traditionele namen voor hun producten (denk ook aan het schoolbord).

Of the many eLearning theories that influence the practice, three of them are used by professionals on a daily basis.

Not bad, but I have two major reservations.

 

1) These are three approaches - or in the worst case three competing educational ideologies - not three theories (there is very little that is scientific about constructivism; behavoirism has not been taken serious as a theory since 1960).

 

2) <<Now that you are able to distinguish three basic instructional design theories, how do you decide which one to use?>>

There is no need to choose, you can combine elements of these three approaches. That is exactly what experienced teachers do (and in different contexts they use different combinations), 

 

If you want to learn to teach, do not study learning "theories".

- find an experienced mentor
- learn all about your subjects and then just start to teach. You will make mistakes, spot and correct them (hint: teaching is about what the students get out of it, not about what the teacher put into it).

But I'm left with the impression that these strategy experts do not really get the education thing

Hint: the primary process of tertiary education is not the professor who teaches, but the student who studies.
Corollary: students are not consumers, they are the producers.

So the relevant analogy is not listing to recorded music,
but learning to play an instrument for yourself.

John Hattie beschrijft in Visible Learning op basis van zijn fameuze metastudie welke interventies van invloed zijn op leerprestaties van lerenden. En welke interventies juist niet. Deze infographic vat de zeven meest en minst effectieve interventies samen. Uiteraard gaat het ook om de kwaliteit van een interventie. Slechte feedback kan averechts werken. De Infographic bevat ook een overzicht van de 50 effect sizes. Handig, al met al.
