This is about course design in general (broader than MOOCs).
It gives a structured way of working through the design process.

Some interesting idea's, also some very dangerous idea's (e.g you should start the design by embracing the official ideological/pedagogical educational "philosophy" of your institution - that's what a "professional"  company man does, a professional pedagogue starts with: student characteristics, goals, and subject content, only after that you may start to think about the most appropriate teaching "ideology" (instructivism, collaberativism, constructivism etc). 
An other unprofessional bias here is that there should always be collaboration (collaboration is the highest good). That is evidently not true. Collaboration often gets in the way of serious learning.

Gisteren heb ik samen met een aantal collega s een werklunch verzorgd over Open en online onderwijs. En toen was het een van de zaken die naar voor kwam toen we het over de Masterclasses van de Open Universiteit hadden (dat zijn weliswaar geen MOOCs maar vallen...

Leuk, nog iemand die aan de data scpecialisation course mee doet.

Ik ben zelf ook net begonnen.

 

Op basis van de courses die ik eerder bij Jonhs Hopkins heb gevolgd ben ik wel geneigd een kanttekening te plaatsen bij de didactische kwaliteit van de "docenten". De heren zijn primaire experts, die het leuk vinden om te laten zien hoe zij het doen. Dit is extreem leerzaam als je het ingangsniveau hebt om te snappen waar ze mee bezig zijn. Als je dat niveau niet hebt is het m.i. erg lastig om er chocola van te maken. Uitleg wordt niet echt gegeven, eigenlijk zijn het geen docenten, het zijn experts die het leuk vinden om te laten zien wat ze doen.

 [his experience] has left McPhee a firm advocate for MOOCs — but in a back to the future kind of way. McPhee doesn’t see MOOCs supplanting face-to-face teaching, instead he believes they could be the answer to restoring the long-dead small tutorial. . . . 


. . .  the future lies in cutting many lectures and replacing them with 12-15 minute online videos. That would ultimately will free up academics to teach tutorial groups of perhaps just 10 students

A: (paraphrasing) universities see that we are not cannibalizing their existing market  . . . the vast majority of our students already have completed their formal education . . . they are looking to re-skill themselves  . . . the universities use Coursera to reach this untapped markets
A (14:58) What I think we are going to do for universities . . . is transform the way they teach, we are going to be a catalyst for change, moving away from boring lectures to more experiential teaching and interactive
Q(15:38): how does that change the role of the professor?
A: they will have to learn a new set of skills to teach blended classrooms. . . the data show that blended classrooms are considerably more effective . . . content will be delivered online, schools will add real value to the learning process with labs, discussion groups, debates, projects  . . . even professors that are not charismatic in the classroom can do very well because video lecturing is more like an intimate conversation in your office than a performance on stage.

I like MOOCs, but MOOCs are not the solution for all problems. Here is a solution for a large part of the USA "higher" Ed  crisis. (the problems tackled are: high schools fail in preparing students + most students will find little in "higher" education that they really can use (they would be well served by "medium" education).
PS did you now that few Swiss top-bankers have a college degree?

The credential aims to provide a way for students to prove they have mastered some sort of skill, such as data analysis or programming, without the time commitment or expense of getting a traditional college degree.


Humm, does this mean that Thrun has the illusion that a high-school diploma is all that is needed to start such a mini-degree (my guess is that for most of these degrees a Bsc is an entrance requirement. So this is not an alternative for a expensive college degree. It is a good specialization for those who already have a degree. )

The Internet is a dream for someone with a growth mindset. Between Khan Academy, MOOCs, and others, there is unprecedented access to endless content to help you grow your mind. However, society isn’t going to fully take advantage of this without growth mindsets being more prevalent. So what if we actively tried to change that? What if we began using whatever means are at our disposal to start performing growth mindset interventions on everyone we cared about?
