Many job applicants consider social media screening an invasion of privacy, researchers have found, opening the door for discrimination lawsuits

Researchers at North Carolina State University have found that when job applicants realize an organization has viewed their social media profile, they are less likely to perceive the hiring process as fair, regardless of whether they were offered the position. The practice may have serious repercussions for the hiring organization’s reputation and make applicants more inclined to resort to litigation, says Will Stoughton, a doctoral student in industrial psychology and lead author of the paper. The study was published in the Journal of Business and Psychology. “There could be all kinds of negative consequences for creating a selection process that is perceived as invasive and unfair,” says Lori Foster Thompson, a psychology professor at N.C. State and one of the paper’s co-authors. “When you think about the fact that top talent usually has a lot of choices as to where they want to go to work, it begins to really matter.”

Comment les services britanniques surveillaient WikiLeaks

Comment les services britanniques surveillaient WikiLeaks | e-governance solutions | Scoop.it

Big Data Solutions Through The Combination Of Tools

Big Data Solutions Through The Combination Of Tools | e-governance solutions | Scoop.it

As a user who tends to mix-and-match many different tools, not having to deal with configuring and assembling a suite of tools is a big win. So I’m really liking the recent trend towards more integrated and packaged solutions. A recent example is the relaunch of Cloudera’s Enterprise Data hub, to include Spark(1) and Spark Streaming. Users benefit by gaining automatic access to analytic engines that come with Spark(2). Besides simplifying things for data scientists and data engineers, easy access to analytic engines is critical for streamlining the creation of big data applications.

Another recent example is Dendrite(3) – an interesting new graph analysis solution from Lab41. It combines Titan (a distributed graph database), GraphLab (for graph analytics), and a front-end that leverages AngularJS, into a Graph exploration and analysis tool for business analysts.

| e-governance solutions | Scoop.it

The Rule of Law in Cyberspace by Mireille Hildebrandt - VINT

The Rule of Law in Cyberspace by Mireille Hildebrandt - VINT | e-governance solutions | Scoop.it
Cyberspace has long been understood as an unlimited, non-material space, where the law of gravity does not apply and where by default anything and everything  is possible. Understood in this way cyberspace does not exist: this somewhat exalted  notion of cyberspace is an erroneous abstraction of the harsh reality of the hardware,  software and protocols [...]

LinkedTV has #EDF2014 poster on #secondscreen apps enriching TV broadcasts via #LinkedData

LinkedTV has #EDF2014 poster on #secondscreen apps enriching TV broadcasts via #LinkedData | e-governance solutions | Scoop.it
LinkedTV is pleased to announce its submission "Developing a second screen application for TV broadcasts enriched via Linked Open Data" has been accepted as a poster presentation at the European Data Forum 2014, in Athens, Greece, on the 19th March 2014, 6-8pm.  Increasingly, European citizens consume television content on, or with, devices connected to the Internet where they can look up related information. In parallel, Europe is publishing growing amounts of Linked Open Data, including rich metadata about its cultural heritage. The LinkedTV project’s goal is to seamlessly interlink TV and Web content to enrich the user’s experience of both. Linked Data and semantic technologies enable broadcasters to achieve added value for their content at low cost through the re-use of existing and extracted metadata. We will present at EDF2014 two user studies (on Interactive News and the Hyperlinked Documentary) and the end-user interface for a second screen [...]
