The Internet of Things will account for 9 billion devices by 2018 (Business Insider), mobile will account for 21% of all online purchases by 2015 (Google), and social network users will surpass 2 billion by 2016 (eMarketer). Ironically, despite the explosion of technology, channels and devices, today’s continuously connected consumers are harder to reach than ever before.!

This infographic breaks down the anatomy of the connected consumer to help your brand more effectively reach, engage and convert customers across today’s mobile and socially connected landscape....

The technologies of public relations are on their way.... | ZDNet | e-commerce & social media | Scoop.it

...PR needs to figure out how to automate some of its capabilities and keep up with the changing trends affecting their clients. The major trend is in helping companies become media companies simply because there are fewer reporters around to help tell the stories of clients.

I’ve worked with Intel on its Intel Free Press and other media projects, for example. And PR firms need to do the same, help every company to be a media company and how best to use the media technologies available....

But the publishing, etc, is not enough. There needs to be a large technology component inside the future successful PR firm. It needs technologies of promotion that can scale the work of its practitioners in the service of its clients....

Watch this 10 minute video for a refresher course in handling TARGET KEYWORD PHRASES on your website. Some tips are:

 - Avoid excessive keyword repetition on the page. 1-2 times is enough.

 - A title people will click is worth more than a perfectly optimized one.

 - Do use your keyword phase in your page headline so people know they are in the right place.

 - User experience is key.

 - Watch for keyword cannibalization.

Magento Go vs Shopify Ecommere Online Store Smackdown

Magento Go vs Shopify Ecommere Online Store Smackdown | e-commerce & social media | Scoop.it

Best Online Store Option For YOU?
I've used Magento Go and Shopify. I've also used other Content Management Systems when I managed an Ecom team (for 7 years) including home grown and Magento enterprise.

If you want to start an online store which platform should you use? Let's look at a feature by feature comparison:

Easy To Use - Winner Shopify

Plugin / Add On Development - Winner Magento Go

Email Integration - Tie (both work well with MailChip et al)

SEO - Magento Go if you KNOW SEO, Shopify if you don't

Promotion - Magento Go if you KNOW ecom, Shopify if you don't

Manage SKUs - Tie
up to about 50,000 after than NEITHER (you've outgrown OPP Other People's Platform if you have more than 50,000 unique stock keeping units SKUs).

Cart - backend Magento Go
(can do more with logic so ASSUMES you know how to create business rule promotions) frontend (what customer sees) Shopify.

Templates - Tie

Pretzel Logic - Magento Go
(winning this is not a good thing since it means the platform has its own language YOU must learn or things go bump in the night. Magento Go is willing to be confusing and a pain to add POWER, but 95% will never use that power so if you have a small, fun store steer clear).

Cross Sale / UpSale
Slight nod to Magento Go again assumes you know ECOM well and cross merchandising is not intuitive but is powerful.

Overall Winner - Shopify
For most readers of this post Shopify is the best choice.

Magento Go honorable mention
for a specialized niche group that need powerful business rule based promotion, have between 30k to 50k SKUs and don't mind learning a new language to get the backend power they need. If you don't know your crosssale (what you do on a product page to move customers to more profitable or popular choices) or upsale (what you do in the car to build Average Order Value (AOV) then use SHOPIFY.

Visual content has always reigned supreme. However, with shorter attention spans and a deluge of content, it's getting more and more difficult to be seen.

That doesn't mean that you cannot do it. For example, a great way to achieve success is to hit your audience with a bang. Short videos can help tremendously.

This article is great because it presents some well-chosen case studies. My favorite one is trend #1. I watch BBC News' Instafaxes on Instagram every day and love how succinct and yet thorough the team can be in 15 seconds.

At the end of the day, the correlation between shares and ranking is so high that smart content strategists should act as if they were taken into account.

Introducing The Periodic Table of Content Marketing

Introducing The Periodic Table of Content Marketing | e-commerce & social media | Scoop.it

How to use the Periodic Table of Content Marketing

If you click the image a large screenshot should appear. I hope it is all reasonably self-explanatory. There are eight areas that I have focused on, as follows:

Strategy

The fundamental key to success. Planning and focus is essential. You need a clear strategy, mapped to your long-term business goals. If you don’t have one and need some outside guidance then we can help. We also have a very useful best practice guide on content strategy.

Format

Content comes in many different shapes and sizes. Note that you can use multiple formats for a single piece of content. Slice and dice! Right now, I’m writing a blog post to support a visualisation. Maybe I’ll produce a video or slideshow too.

Content Type

These are based on the common types of content that work well for our business. Many of them will work well for your brand too. Sometimes you’ll use multiple content types for a single piece of content. You could file this periodic table under a few different types.

Platform

These are content distribution platforms. You might own some of these (e.g. #59, your website). Others are social sites (your own, your network, third parties). All of these help spread the word about your content.

Metrics

These help you to measure the performance of your content. For the purposes of brevity, I have largely grouped these metrics together (e.g. ‘acquisition metrics’).

Goals

All content should support your primary business goals, whether that’s to generate lots of traffic, or to sell more, or to increase brand awareness. Laser-guided content will tick a few of these boxes.

Sharing Triggers

This is largely inspired by Unruly Media’s triggers for sharing content. Think about the emotional drivers behind sharing, and make sure the content you create makes people feel something.

Checklist

I will probably edit this post at least 10 times after publishing it, and no doubt the periodic table will need a tweak here or there. Errors need to be fixed, and all content should be properly optimised (for search, for social, and to support your business goals). Be diligent!
