An American in ISIS's Retweet Army

An American in ISIS's Retweet Army | e-commerce social media | Scoop.it

The gradual radicalization of Douglas McAuthur McCain, we're told, is reflected in his social-media timelines. This week, NBC News  reported that McCain, a 33-year-old from Minneapolis and San Diego, had become the first American to die in Syria while fighting for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), in clashes with other rebel fighters.

(On Thursday, Fox News reported that a second American from Minneapolis may have been killed while fighting for ISIS in the same battle.)

"Until early last year, a Twitter account linked to McCain included mostly mundane messages to friends about basketball—how the Lakers suck, comments about the Chicago Bulls—with only a few messages about Allah or Islam," NBC noted. "Then the account went silent for more than a year."

McCain, who converted to Islam in 2004 and also appears to have used networks like Facebook and MySpace, fired up his feed again in mid-May—around the time that ISIS was publicizing its control over the Syrian city of Raqqa with public executions, and just weeks before the group launched its military offensive in northern Iraq....

LinkedIn's SlideShare Goes Completely Free | e-commerce social media | Scoop.it

Slideshare, a platform owned by LinkedIn for sharing presentations, documents, infographics and other files, is now completely free to use.

As TechCrunch notes, the optional Pro tiers that existed before have been stripped out and premium features, including analytics, profile customization and private uploads, are being opened up to all users.

New and existing “free” users won’t receive all these goodies straight away, however. SlideShare will be rolling out one new feature every month, starting in September. They haven’t announced the order, or when the roll-out will be completed, but presumably it’s been done to keep newcomers engaged....

How Hyperlocal Advertising Changes Everything

How Hyperlocal Advertising Changes Everything | e-commerce social media | Scoop.it

One of 2014’s biggest trends is the rise of hyperlocal advertising. Hyperlocal, as it’s called in ad tech circles, allows marketers to use a smartphone’s GPS data to geographically target audiences for the purpose of delivering relevant ads.

When you combine this with the ability to purchase ad impressions individually, through programmatic ad platforms that are powered by real-time bidding, marketers now have a cost-effective way to engage their audiences in a manner that matches ads to the context of their physical location....

The Fall of the Banner Ad: A Look at Online Advertising in 2014

The Fall of the Banner Ad: A Look at Online Advertising in 2014 | e-commerce social media | Scoop.it

Online advertising has grown exponentially since its foundation in the 90s. Now, online ad sales make up the majority of the industry, and savvy companies are directing the lion’s share of their budgets at the digital space.

Advertising through social media is nothing new, but so far, brands have been playing it safe, using many of the same methods that have already been successful in the past – combining banner- and text-link-style ads in news feeds and sidebars. But the possibilities of social advertising have yet to be fully explored.

The real power comes not from the reach of a company’s network, but from getting that company’s customers to do the outreach FOR them.

Social media is changing the way people view and interact with content online. While the idea of a website “page” has been a vital component in the way people understand the web, the use of feed-based content in Facebook, Twitter and Instagram has changed the concept of what a website IS. ....

The Content Marketing Pyramid: Create More With Less

The Content Marketing Pyramid: Create More With Less | e-commerce social media | Scoop.it

These days, content marketing teams are expected to create content in all shapes and sizes. Following the advice of content marketing sages, we’re posting tweets every few hours, blogging every day, podcasting every week, publishing an eBook every month… and the list goes on. Trying to keep up with the seemingly insatiable demand, content teams often feel overwhelmed and stretched too thin. Even worse, all this frenetic activity often lacks an underlying strategy or focus.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Back in 2010, I proposed the Content Marketing Pyramid — a strategy that allows you to get more out the door with the same effort. It’s done by combining infrequent, time-intensive content with low-effort, recurring content....

Survey Of 500+ Publishers Reveals How They Want To Be Pitched

Survey Of 500+ Publishers Reveals How They Want To Be Pitched | e-commerce social media | Scoop.it

Today, editorial voices are outnumbered by public relations professionals by almost 5:1. In order to grasp the big picture, the first thing you need to understand is a publisher’s capacity.

On average, 45% of writers publish one story per day. Meanwhile, 8% of writers get pitched more than 100 times per day, 11% more than 50 times per day, and 40% more than 20 times per day. In other words, these writers get 100, 250, or 500 pitches a week for only five story spots!

When you take into account that only 11% of writers said they “often” write a story based on content that was sent through pitches, you quickly realize that the amount of email waste rises well above a person’s threshold to tolerate it....

A Guide to Growing Your Twitter Audience

A Guide to Growing Your Twitter Audience | e-commerce social media | Scoop.it

...We love Twitter for rapid interaction, ease of use and because it’s an online gateway to hordes of potential followers (and website visitors). Followers mean popularity, which in turn means trust, which then in turn could lead to customers and brand recognition. There are numerous ways to tap into this glowing hub of activity, watch Eric Kuhn's video for some insider tips.

As Twitter is such a fast flowing social network, doing simple things can often bring you great results very quickly. For example, running a competition is going to get you noticed faster than following someone in the hope they will follow you back because a competition gives Twitter users something that they want. Twitter may be fast and furious but by investing a little effort, it will reward you, eventually. ...Over the last few days I’ve been playing with Truth, a similar app for iOS that lets you send anonymous text messages to people in your phone’s contacts.

The interface is a close facsimile of Apple’s default Messages app, so there isn’t much of a learning curve. There is a bit of friction to get started with the app, however: besides the expected popups asking for permission to access your contacts, Truth also makes you register with an email address and password.

...That quibble with the setup process aside, Truth works as advertised. You can choose any contact in your address book to send an anonymous text, and in several tests, messages arrive in about as much time as they would via a regular text. Messages begin with “The truth is” by default, which is meant to inspire compliments or hard truths that might be too awkward to express openly....
