Why People Choose to Shop—or Not to Shop—on Their Phones

Why People Choose to Shop—or Not to Shop—on Their Phones | e-commerce & social media | Scoop.it

Mobile shopping isn't going anywhere this year.

More than 60 percent of omnichannel shoppers said they plan to start making purchases using mobile devices or will do so even more in the upcoming year, according to a new study released today by Facebook. (Already, 45 percent of all shopping includes some form of mobile interaction including doing research, comparing prices or making purchases. Among millennials, that number jumps to 57 percent.)

Facebook IQ commissioned GfK to study 2,400 adults who had used mobile phones, tablets, desktops or laptops to research or buy items online in the past three months. Purchasing categories included clothing, consumer electronics, home appliances, home goods and beauty.

The study also looked at why those shopping on mobile devices chose to use them. Fifty-six percent said it was because they already happened to be on a device, while 55 percent pointed to the convenience it afforded....

Leila Anzabi's curator insight, February 7, 8:11 PM

45% of all shopping includes some sort of mobile interaction. Among millennials, that number jumps to 57%. People who choose to shop on mobile devices say it is because they happen to already be on their device or because it's just more convenient. However, there are many obstacles mobile shopping faces, including the criticism on their transaction processes and their apps that need improvement. Making it easier to enter payment information, being able to ship to multiple locations, and being able to make transactions without downloading an app would all help reduce these criticisms. The breakdown of stats on a study are quite interesting on what people perfer:

Desktop/laptop vs mobile

56% say its easier to see everything on desktop

55% find it easier to use big devices

27% find it difficult to compare products/retailers through mobile

26% say entering personal data is not user friendly on smartphones or tablets

I personally agree with the statistics above. I love to online shop as it is very convenient, especially with a retailer who provides a great return policy. However, I never shop on my phone. Not because I do not trust it, or because I find it difficult to type in my payment preference, but because a mobile device is too small to compare products or retailers on. Many websites also do not adapt to mobile standards and look odd/different on my phone then on a desktop.

The future of loyalty lies in mobile payments | The Wise Marketer

The future of loyalty lies in mobile payments | The Wise Marketer | e-commerce & social media | Scoop.it

If you've read anything on the costs of customer acquisition vs customer retention over the last 20 years, you'll have heard that customer retention makes good business sense. And while the traditional loyalty card is dying out, loyalty itself is more alive than ever - but marketers need to take a different approach, according to myCircle.

Experts claim that it costs anywhere between 3 and 30 times more to get a new customer through your door than it does to persuade an existing one to return - even if that door is virtual, in the form of a website or mobile app. With figures like that, just imagine the increase in profit margin a business could make on something as simple as a cup of coffee… if it's customers loyally returned on a daily basis. 64.180.55.243 This article is copyright 2015 TheWiseMarketer.com.

The traditional answer to this has always been the loyalty card, but the truth is, whilst loyalty schemes are more popular than ever, the loyalty card that you are so readily handing out… the one that your customer has just stuffed inside his or her wallet or put on a key fob, is dead weight. In an age where the world is moving toward an integrated online/offline experience, the loyalty card is inflexible, inconvenient and simply no longer fit for purpose. Cards get lost or forgotten, rewards go uncollected and the loyalty that you're expecting your card to deliver, will never arrive....

4 Ways the Social Media Landscape Will Change in 2016 - Pardot

4 Ways the Social Media Landscape Will Change in 2016 - Pardot | e-commerce & social media | Scoop.it

One of the most interesting studies I’ve read recently is Gartner’s Top Strategic Predictions for 2016 and Beyond: The Future Is a Digital Thing, a report published in October that delves into the evolving relationship between man and machine. The key takeaway? “Smart” and predictive technologies aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, and that applies to our business lives as much as it does to our personal ones.

-  By 2018, 20% of all business content will be authored by machines.

-  By 2020, smart agents will facilitate 40% of mobile interactions, and the post-app era will begin to dominate.

-  By 2018, 6 billion connected things will be requesting support.

The implications of our increasingly smart world are both inspiring and frightening (as a copywriter, hearing that machines are making their way into the content realm is particularly scary!). As I started thinking about 2016 trends, it quickly became apparent that many of these same digital themes are making their way into the content marketing and social media spaces — and have been for some time.

Let’s take a look at some of the key trends we can expect to see over the next year. How will content and social — both already digital in so many ways — become increasingly digital in 2016?...

Mobile Marketing Can Change Your Business

Mobile Marketing Can Change Your Business | e-commerce & social media | Scoop.it

I mentioned at the beginning of the article that mobile marketing will be a game-changer akin to other major shifts in marketing in the past decades. But you might wonder why. Let’s look at some statistics. In 2013, according to reports by  comScore and Nielsen, users were spending 40% of their internet time on mobile devices. And at the end of 2009, Morgan Stanley made a prediction that in five years, internet users would prefer mobile devices to desktops to access the web. Unsurprisingly, these predictions turned out to be correct. And it seems that things are looking ever-brighter for those hoping to use mobile marketing.

Comprehensive reports show that the trend is ever increasing, so much so that in 2015 alone, mobile phone internet traffic increased by 39%. And in January 2015, web-pages served to mobile phones comprised a third of all served pages. This means that mobile advertising must have grown also. And it has.

To put things into perspective, in 2009, internet advertising grew by 9%, while more traditional forms like newspapers, radio and TV went down 18.7%, 11.7% and 10.1% respectively. Billions of dollars go into mobile advertising every year and by 2017, experts foresee that mobile ad spending will reach just shy of $60 billion worldwide....

The Actionable Guide to Reddit Marketing for Your Business

The Actionable Guide to Reddit Marketing for Your Business | e-commerce & social media | Scoop.it

Reddit is a website built upon hundreds of different groups, also known as subreddits. Each subreddit has its own rules, and depending on the rules, you can either start a new thread with a link and/or a text post (links can be added inside the text). The only identifiable information to others is your username (which doesn’t even have to be your name).

Aside from your username the only other relevant element of your profile is the amount of “karma” that you have. Karma reflects the quality of the content you have provided: the upvotes or downvotes that you get for your comments and posts compromise your “karma” count. More Reddit “karma” only means that you are a trusted source and a healthy Reddit user (and not another brand spamming Reddit). There is no added benefit to your posts as someone with more “karma” versus someone with less....

The REAL Reasons You Need Twitter For Business

The REAL Reasons You Need Twitter For Business | e-commerce & social media | Scoop.it

I didn’t plan to write a blog about why Twitter for business is so important because as a social media professional, its pretty obvious.

But as I was gathering research for another Twitter marketing subject to write about, I was blown away at how many brands are either stepping back from executing a consistent Twitter strategy or aren’t participating at all.

The media may rant and rave about how Twitter is fading because it doesn’t have a CEO or because it’s not making money, but none of those things make it any less of a social network. Its still at the top, and I predict it will only continue to grow....

(From the article): Drive trafficAnother major reason for investing in Twitter is that is can drive MAJOR traffic to your website.Twitter is typically the #1 social traffic source for our clients, and it doesn’t take an enormous amount of effort.Yes, you must consistently create new native content to share on Twitter, and yes, you must be sure to promote yourself clearly, but Twitter will streamline that traffic without issue. Its not like Facebook who continues to become more and more possessive about keeping its users ON Facebook. Twitter isn’t jealous and doesn’t overwhelm us with ads – it allows businesses to easily push followers through to a website. And with its recent 2015 updates of video and photos, its even easier to drive traffic wherever you want it to go.
