What Will Drive Consumers to Shop Online in 2014 [Infographic]

What Will Drive Consumers to Shop Online in 2014 [Infographic] | e-Commerce and User Experience (UX) | Scoop.it

What will inspire consumers to shop online in 2014?

Walker Sands recently surveyed some 1,046 US consumers for its 2014 Future of Retail Study and shared some of its findings about online shopping in the following infographic.

Some 40% of surveyed consumers say they shop online one to two times per month. And 20% shop online seven to 12 times a year.

Of those surveyed, 80% say that free shipping makes them more likely to purchase products online while 66% say one-day shipping inspires them to shop.

Moreover, one in 10 consumers say they would spend more than $1,000 online without seeing a product first.

The 6 Pieces of the Customer Experience Puzzle

The 6 Pieces of the Customer Experience Puzzle | e-Commerce and User Experience (UX) | Scoop.it
How do you define customer experience -- and, more importantly, how do you create the best customer experience model? I started wondering about both concepts while working on an assignment to increase sales from the digital channel of a hospitality giant. It seems like everyone is interested in the idea of “great customer experiences." But both businesses and scholars have struggled to understand what that really means, and have fared even worse at attempts to measure the outcomes of Topic: Customer Experience.

Escape Google With These 12 Search Engine Alternatives

Escape Google With These 12 Search Engine Alternatives | e-Commerce and User Experience (UX) | Scoop.it

Google isn't the only game in town and isn't even the best alternative for many specific search tasks and needs. Here's how to escape Google's grip with Bing, Blekko, BuzzSumo, DuckDuckGo, SocialMention, Quantcast, Topsy, Wolfram|Alpha, and more.

As concerns over the de facto monopoly status of Google continue to grow, I'm reminded of the great philosopher Herman Cain and his infamous line  "blame yourself". As long as "Google" is a generic phrase for Internet search, their dominant position is assured. That said, you can do something about it.There are plenty of Google alternatives and many of these players offer a bettersearch experience, depending on your needs. Here are 12 alternatives to escape your reliance on Google for all things search...

Consumer Psychology at the E-Commerce Checkout

Consumer Psychology at the E-Commerce Checkout | e-Commerce and User Experience (UX) | Scoop.it

E-Commerce and online shopping has become a significant stream of revenue for companies worldwide, but how much do we really know about the consumer psychology behind web purchases?

Research has shown that a consumer will assess a product within 90 seconds and will then make a quick initial judgement on whether they decide to make a purchase or not. Video is another big factor when it comes to influencing consumers to make a transaction. Nearly one third of online shoppers bought a product after being influenced by video and 50 percent of customers have more confidence in a product after watching a video online.

Trusted resources such as product reviews have become a massive part of how people shop online. A whopping 85 percent of people said they read online reviews before making a transaction. Two thirds of customers read up to six online reviews in order to trust a business/product enough to complete a purchase.

Why do online shoppers get to the checkout point and then abandon the purchase? The average figure for checkout abandonment rate is 67.4 percent. The main reasons for abandonment are hidden charges and having to register before buying. Other reasons include lengthy checkout process, unclear delivery details and a phone number not included on the website.

40 mapas que explican INTERNET

Robin Good's curator insight, June 8, 4:45 AM

A good example of content curation at work is the Vox feature collection entitled "40 maps that explain the internet", which showcases in a highly digestible and visual format where the Internet came from, how it works, and how it's used by people around the world.

Although at first glance this may look just as a list of maps with descriptions, there's a lot of curation work that can be appreciated by looking just a bit beyond the surface.

a) Titles and descriptions are well crafted, short, focused, but consistently clear and to the point.

b) The 40 maps are intelligently organized into six different groups:

  1. How the Internet was created
  2. The Internet around the world
  3. Threats to the Internet
  4. The geography of online services
  5. How America gets online
  6. How we use the Internet

c) Images of maps sourced from elsewhere are properly credited and linked.

To the ignorant eye, this will look like "oh, just another collection of maps", but to the avid reader, scholar and to the curious enough to look beyond appearances, the value of this editorial work is on how it perfectly hides the amount of complexity and research work it has required while organizing and presenting an extremely clear and comprehensive body of valuable information on the chosen topic.

Curated by Timothy B. Lee together with editor Eleanor Barkhorn,

designer Uy Tieu and developer Yuri Victor.

A good example of curation at work. 8/10

Bento is a website that, thanks to its author Jon Chan and the many user contributions, has gathered, organized and curated the very best resources available online where you can learn how to code.

From html to javascript, ruby, php, Java, perl, Bento offers learning guidance for over 80 different technologies and coding languages.

Here is how Jon Chan, a 23 years old who launched this project in September of 2013, describes Bento:

"Bento is what I would have liked to have when I was learning to code.

I started learning to code when I was very young - about ten years old. Then, the only things I had available were what I could find online and through a few dense books.

Now, people have the exact opposite problem: how do you break through the noise and find what's actually valuable to learn?

This site is here to help you figure that out."

Bento is a perfect example of effective content curation as it does not simply collect and list all of the resources available to learn each language but it only suggests the very best ones, organizing them in easy, medium and hard and providing also "best of" / direct solutions that save readers lots of valuable time.

Free to use.

Alert! Magazine First Quarter 2014 A 4-Dimensional View of the Digitally Engaged Consumer | Marketing Research Association | e-Commerce and User Experience (UX) | Scoop.it

Introduction
This paper[1] examines work conducted in support of a single-source methodology in order to understand how, when applied to consumers’ devices, the new research tracking technologies complement and enhance the traditional survey question approach. The aim of this research is to better understand the complex world of multiple devices and how consumers engage with them, and to establish standards for a research methodology that assesses the current multi-channel communication scheme.

Context
Technology has replaced the middleman, creating endless opportunities for consumers to search and purchase a product, as well as interact with brands. For brands, technology has opened up new channels of communication, offering a broad spectrum of targeting capabilities. Displaying the right message to the right person at the right time has, for the last few years, been the mantra of online media companies.

Consumers are now the center of attention and their online lives are no longer a mystery. They can be metered, tracked and cookied with the newest technology – which is transparent, precise and permission-based, with no hidden spyware or pop-ups. Consumers are also no longer “hiding” online or pretending that they are someone else with a higher household income, better car or a different lifestyle. Today there are too many benefits to being who you really are online.

Experian Marketing Services and Research Now used a single-source, multi-mode approach in this study to uncover new trends and patterns in consumer behaviors during the busiest shopping times of the year. In addition to behaviors, respondents’ survey answers and a robust demographic and segmentation scheme are used to demystify the new digitally-engaged consumer.

Experian Marketing Services has over a decade of consumers’ online behavioral tracking data with expertise in consumer’s behaviors, online seasonality and trends. Research Now offers over 6 million active opt-in panelists globally.

Why The Web Needs Human Content Curation [INFOGRAHIC]

Why The Web Needs Human Content Curation [INFOGRAHIC] | e-Commerce and User Experience (UX) | Scoop.it

We are living in a sea of information. Content marketing has become the buzz word in every marketing strategy.

Although content marketing is nothing new it has never been easier to create and publish content.

Which has lead to a dramatic rise in the amount of content we consume.

Google’s Executive Chairman, Eric Schmidt, stated that: “Every two days we now create as much information as we did from the dawn of civilisation up until 2003.”

That’s an enormous amount of data, and a large amount of that data is surplus to requirement.

Search is Not Enough

When we search the web we are looking for specific information. The search engines are doing their best to help us find the best and most relevant stuff.

But like all automated processes they can only do so much.

Continually gamed Head of Google’s Search Spam team, Matt Cutts, has a fight on his hands to return the “good stuff”. In a recent statement Matt even suggested even guest blogging may not be a good practice.

There is one thing Matt Cutts and Google are for and that is value added content curation. The reason is that curation helps filter the web.

A useful summary of the current shortcomings in content curation tools and services, and what we features and innovations we might see in this developing market. From the author:

"In the near future it is likely that new content curation tools will provide more dedicated features for specific application and uses while becoming more aware of user needs that so far have not been taken into serious consideration (attribution, archiving, monetizing).

While large content curation hubs and platforms are likely to start realizing that their best value yet to be extracted is in the content being curated by their users, new tools will likely target more specific and professional uses rather than the general public needing simply to collect and repost content on their blog or social media channel."
